21.01.2022 Our 4th monthly on-water training day on 10th February was attended by 6 members who participated in EPIRB tracking, Flir operation and throw line techniques. The EPIRB tracking was assisted by 2 men in a visiting boat who kindly took our test EPIRB and we had to find it. The crew in-training experienced the situation of 2 locations as the potential source of the signal. Harlequin was moved several times to assist in eliminating the wrong source and eventually the visiting b...oat was located. When it came to the throw line work, we determined that a simple 10mm silver rope was more effective than the 3 specialist throw lines we have acquired over the years. These exercises are giving our new crew members some hands on experience as they progress through the VMR3 Pathway training module. Previous monthly on-water training days have focused on plotting and navigation work, searching at night and vessel equipment and operation. See more

21.01.2022 Marine Search and Rescue course completed today with an on water exercise. Vessels from Windy Harbour, Walpole, Peaceful Bay, Fisheries and Parks and Wildlife were crewed by a mix of people from each area. Congratulations to the local Police and Water Police in bringing such a course to our area. Here are some pictures of the activities. Thanks to all those who attended and participated in this course.

09.01.2022 Walpole VMR hosted the South Coast Commander's annual MARSAREX over the past weekend. This event included participants from Denmark Sea Rescue, Peaceful Bay Sea Rescue, Walpole VMR, Windy Harbour VMR, Parks and Wildlife, Dept. of Transport (Marine), Fisheries and the WA Police. The event included a very very dark night SAR on the Nornalup Inlet that delivered up a very cold "Fred" after a number of hours searching using spotlights and FLIR (essentially heat seeking camera). T...his was followed on Sunday by some friendly rivalry between the VMR Groups to test their skill with the ultimate aim of taking custody of The Commander's Trophy for the coming year. The winners by a mere 1/4 point, which demonstrates the honed and polished skills of our crews, was Denmark SRG...well done!

08.01.2022 Some more photos from our MARSAREX 2018. Another fantastic training weekend with our fellow volunteers from Windy Harbour, Peaceful Bay and Denmark. Having Parks & Wildlife, Department of Transport (Marine), Fishers and WA Police involved as well broadened the experience for all.

06.01.2022 Walpole VMR hosted a 3 day training event over the weekend on 19-21 January. Volunteers from Albany, Denmark, Walpole, Windy Harbour, Augusta and Rockingham plus trainers from Walpole and Perth attended. This training is part of the VMR3 and VMR4 Pathways and all students should end up being accredited to train and access other VMR members in these modules of learning. The courses covered were Seamanship 1, Sea Survival 1 and Marine Navigation 1 (Basic). The theory lessons we...re accompanied by a practical session on the water where liferaft activation and boarding, lifejackets and flares were put to test. The photos show students participating in the activities of water entry, HELP position, group huddle, conga line swim, raft entry, recover injured person from the water and raft flipping. An 8 person liferaft is a VERY cosy environment with 8 people and the consensus is that none of the students want to have to do this for real. All students had fun putting the classroom theory into practice and were thankful for the warm sunny day and local water temperature a lot warmer than they expected. See more

02.01.2022 We had a rescue yesterday. 2 gents from Albany capsized their 4.55m Quintrex coming back into the inlet from an ocean fishing trip. They luckily escaped without injury but the boat took a bit of a hit. 4 crew on Harlequin, the boaties and 3 other men fishing on the beach assisted in righting the vessel in the surf line and recovering objects from the water. The vessel was rafted alongside and towed back to Rest Point where it was recovered by the owners. All this happened during a scheduled power outage in Walpole and the mobile phone network was not working. Our base station operators, Peter, Deb and Louise used the radio network and vehicles to chase up crew for the rescue.
