04.01.2022 A GREAT WEEKEND OF CYCLING COMING UP!! THE 75th ANNUAL CASTERTON 50 - 18th APRIL 2020 Now the WAL SMITH MEMORIAL CASTERTON 50.... Two great stalwarts of the CASTERTON 50 were George Goodwin(L) and Keith McKenzie (L). George was the winner in 1950 and by taking Fastest Time in 1957, he reversed the Fastest Time placings of 1956, by downing Mocka. The Winner was Keith McKenzie, district scratchman and Mount Gambier star. Keith won with a brilliant late sprint to win the classic from Jim Gleisner and Jack Forbes. Keith also took out the South Australian 100 mile Championship later that year. 2020 will be the 75th CONSECUTIVE STAGING OF THE RACE, not bad for a community that has not had a Cycle Club for 40 years!!!! Wal Smith was the driving force that kept the race going. Last year the event was won by WORLD TRACK CYCLING CHAMPION - SAM WELSFORD from the Scratch mark which also won him the Fastest Time award - but to catch the leaders very close to home he had to break the course record. Sunday will see other events held including the KELPIE COUNTRY CLASSIC for handicap riders and some magnificent racing by the elite ladies and men cyclists. I believe it will start with "Breakfast with the Stars" at the Albion Hotel early Sunday am for those who are able after a Saturday night in Casterton! This will be a great weekend of cycling, witnessing some of our best, catching up to friends and generally enjoying the wonderful ambience of Casterton. A bus tour of the district on Friday 17th April is being organised by Mick "Chucka" Garvey and Doug Issell with lunch at "the Pub in the Scrub" Dergholm proposed. "Tour commentators" are Roley "Toota" Cooper and Ian Harvey. Doug's email is - [email protected] Let me know if you are interested in the bus trip before 31st March. Good health to all and we hope to see those who can make it for this very special and historic occasion. Cheers, Doug
