19.01.2022 This #ThrowbackThursday, it’s all about the Rural Fire Service (RFS)! You may know the RFS as one of three services within QFES, but did you know it was histo...rically known as the Rural Fires Board? The story started in 1927 when the Rural Fires Board was initially formed, but it was temporarily suspended during the great Depression in 1931. After World War II, rural communities across Qld started organising their own volunteer firefighting services the Bush Fire Brigades. This led to the reformation of the Rural Fires Board in 1948. The number of brigades grew from about 350 in the 1950s to about 1,400 brigades in the early 1980s. In 1990, it was reconstructed into the Rural Fires Council and became part of the Queensland Government Department of Emergency Services. Do you have your own throwback photos of the RFS? We’d love to see them!

16.01.2022 We love a BBQ as much as the next Queenslander, but even though it’s getting cold outside, BBQs should only be used outdoors. There are some serious consequenc...es that come with using the grill in enclosed spaces, like the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning. So chuck on a beanie, get outside and cook up a storm!

Consider whether your property may benefit from fire line construction, slashing, grazing or a hazard reduction burn. Rural Fire Service crews are already safely carrying out burns across the state, including this one at the Gold Coast. If you’re interested in conducting a hazard reduction burn on your property, remember to obtain a Permit to Light Fire first.
