24.01.2022 Are your coals cold A lucky homeowner has his quick thinking neighbours to thank, after they noticed a fire coming from the roof of his house last weekend.... After clearing out their fire-pit in the morning and putting the ash/coals in the bin, this homeowner went out later that day and returned to 5 CFA appliances , 2 melted wheelie bins and 2 quick thinking neighbours who jumped the fence earlier and using a couple of garden hoses extinguished the fire, preventing extensive damage. Lilydale CFA was supported by Chirnside Park Fire Brigade - CFA and Mooroolbark Fire Brigade - CFA Winter months are a timely reminder for residence to ensure they're disposing of any hot ash from wood fires safely and responsibly. Place ash in a metal container, using a metal shovel or another appropriate tool. Never use flammable materials for ash disposal, such as plastic bags, paper, or cardboard boxes. Place the metal bucket outside, and pour water into it to douse any hot embers. Keep in mind that hot coal or wood can smoulder for days. After adding water, stir the ashes, so that all of the bucket's contents are wet. Place the ash bucket away from flammable materials, and tightly secure the lid. Do not put the metal container on a wooden floor or any other type of flammable surface. If you vacuum remaining ashes out of your wood stove, only use a vacuum that is especially designed for the purpose of removing hot and cold embers. Safely transport the secured metal container to your nearest waste facility as required; OR Place cooled, moist wood ashes in your compost bin to improve the compost for your gardens. Hot ashes joined a number of unsafe items that should not be placed into wheelie bins including batteries, smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, construction and demolition waste, large electrical appliances and gas bottles.

12.01.2022 SNAKE BITE FIRST AID FOR DOGS AND CATS I have spoken in the past about 1st aid for people if bitten by a snake, but as there is more chance of a pet being bitte...n, I thought it would be a good idea to inform in regard to 1st aid for our furry friends. Keep an eye on you dogs and cats as they will usually notice a snake long before you do. If they are acting strange, investigate immediately and get your pets away from the danger. Just remember dogs and cats go for the snakes, not ever the other way around and consequences can be very expensive and often fatal. We and our pets are starting to spending more time outdoors. There are really only 4 species that are likely to be a threat in out region. They are Lowland Copperhead (by far the most common) Tiger Snakes, Brown Snakes and Red Bellied Black Snakes. Part of the danger regarding snakes is generally their small size (most average 1 to 3 feet) and inconspicuous presence, people often not knowing they are there until they’re in close proximity. All bites need to be treated as an envenomation. Venom from different species of snakes affects different body systems, so symptoms can present variably. Some common signs that a snake bite has occurred may include Disorientation Sudden weakness followed by collapse Tremors/convulsing Vomiting Difficulty swallowing Abnormal heart/respiratory rates Dilated pupils not responsive to light Blood in the urine Paralysis Small puncture wounds Excessive salivation Swollen painful bite site As soon as possible after a suspected bite has occurred- call the vet to let them know you are on your way, and get to them as soon as possible. In cases where you have seen a bite occur, the principles of first aid are the same as for humans. Keep the dog as still and as calm as possible to keep their heart rate low, slowing the spread of venom through their system. Restrain them to achieve this, but do not do so if it makes them panic and struggle, as the anxiety raises the heart rate which defeats the purpose of keeping them still in the first place. If the bite is on a leg (these and noses are the most common places), firmly bandage the leg starting below the bite area, covering the bite and finishing above. This can be quite tight for the trip, however it only works if it is the whole limb bandaged. Don’t use a tourniquet or tighten a bandage only above the bite as this method causes more damage than good. In extreme cases CPR may need to be conducted during the trip to the vet, commence chest compressions at 60-100 beats per minute while the animal is lying right side down (the heart is located in the left side of the chest cavity) and do not stop until you reach a vet clinic. The average recovery time at the vet for dogs that survive is about 48 hours, however severity of the bite can affect this time greatly. If you do see a snake, please do not try to catch it or kill it as this makes them very angry and much more likely to strike out in defence with often dire consequences. Call me for removal or advise anytime on 0413 592 398 Stay alert and stay safe when out and about. The Snake Removalist See more

02.01.2022 FIRE SAFETY WITH HOME WOOD HEATERS We regularly discuss the need to remove creosote in your chimney by annual cleaning and correct selection of firewood. It is ...not only in the chimney that an unwanted fire can occur. Some wood heaters have a rotary fan to suck air in through vents, situated near the floor. The fan passes air over the back of the heat box and out through vents located on top of the heater. Normally you would have a variable speed switch that controls the airflow. When the wood heater is burning this fan spreads warm air into your home. Those vents close to floor also suck in dust, fluff, animal hair and any wood particles that are at the base of the heater. The fire risk is twofold- 1. Fire can start due to an electrical fault caused by a blocked fan 2. A hot spark could fall through the vent and ignite the build-up of fluff What to do? The space under the wood heater needs to be cleaned regularly by a competent person. The power needs to turn off and the cable unplugged at the wall socket. The grill/vent panel needs to be removed. The dust, fluff, animal hair and any wood particles need to be removed The fan and its power cable need to be removed from the unit The rotary fan needs to have all the vanes cleaned by compressed air blower (Even a leaf blower will do the task). When all is clean and dust free, the fan and grill can be put back and tested. Photo: A block and dirty fan may cause the fire you do not want
