13.01.2022 WANGANELLA TRAVEL INSPIRATION The village known as Wanganella has a long standing history for its importance within the sheep farming industry.... Once a bustling centre of activity for the surrounding farming district, land was first subdivided at Wanganella in 1864 and allotments sold. A traveller passing through Wanganella in mid-1865 described the township as consisting "of two public houses, a blacksmiths shop, and a shoemakers shop"; he also stated that "a neat bridge" had been erected over Billabong Creek. Another report from 1865 stated there were twenty-five persons living at Wanganella, which had two inns, two stores and two butchers' shops. Today theres a few hundred residents that call this village and area home, and although the Inns and butcher shops are no more, the local Wanganella Licensed Store is very much the heart of this rural hamlet. Located on the Long Paddock Touring Route and ideally placed between Deniliquin and Hay, its now a popular spot for those seeking some quiet time away, a touch of fishing for the mighty Murray Cod, bird watching and peaceful camping by the famous Billabong Creek (believed to be the longest creek in the world!). If youre after a touch of serenity, a pinch of natural beauty and a whole lot of country hospitality - Wanganella is definitely the place to stop!
