25.01.2022 Piano tuning’s loss is the jazz world’s gain. At 17 years of age, Julien Wilson turned down a piano tuning apprenticeship to study improvisation at the Victorian College of the Arts with Brian Brown and Barry Duggan. Since then, he's won many awards, including the 1994 National Jazz Award. He followed this up by releasing This Is Always at our 2013 festival, to great acclaim. It seems fitting that we celebrate such an accomplished performer and you go and taste some of his ...compositions and improvisations on his website. 23.01.2022 As we continue highlighting Australian jazz talent and what they are up to now, this week we focus on Carl Morgan , jazz guitarist who won the National Jazz Award in 2014. After first being named a finalist at just 19, he now lives in Berlin. He grew up in NSW and studied at ANU where he took out the Peter and Lena Karmel Award for most outstanding graduate of the School of Music. We hope you enjoy the Carl Morgan Quintet’s The Wall. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voAa0tJO...WNw&feature=emb_logo Creative Victoria Australia Council for the Arts Rural City of Wangaratta

22.01.2022 Here's a mid-week treat. Kristin Berardi performed in the closing ceremony of The Commonwealth Games in 2018 and loves to share music. A creative musician, composer and educator, Kristin Berardi is one of the first calls in Australia when it comes to Jazz vocals, however she works consistently in the contemporary music field outside jazz and into the experimental field. She won the National Jazz Award in 2012. 21.01.2022 Calling all emerging jazz vocal artists how would you like a studio recording session? Thanks to Pughouse Studios, a proud sponsor of the National Jazz Awards since 2013, this year they have very generously provided a studio recording session as part of the first prize. Since its inception in 2012, more than 150 albums have been produced at Pughouse Studios including by many of Australia’s outstanding jazz, contemporary and classical musicians.... Owner/engineer, Nikolaus Schauble is also a composer, music producer and has worked as a jazz drummer for over 40 years. He has been nominated for many awards including the APRA AMCOS Art Music Awards (for recording). Niko is currently working on a collaboration with West Australian sound artist Jon Tarry as well as writing compositions for several European ensembles, including the Berlin Jazz Composers Orchestra. How cool would it be to work with him? Get your entry in by 31 August. https://wangarattajazz.com/national-jazz-awards/

20.01.2022 Thanks to Andra Jackson and The Australian for comprehensive coverage of this year’s National Jazz Awards open to vocalists. Andra's article highlights the changes: entries open to young people up to 36 years old, all Australian judges and the finals will be live streamed. This is a great opportunity for young Australian artists to still focus on their careers in a year when so much has changed in the arts. Entries close on 31 August. 11.01.2022 2009 was the festival’s 20th anniversary and the year Zac Hurren, a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, took out the National Jazz Award at the festival. As a gifted tenor saxophonist, composer and improviser, he is known for creating exciting new Aussie jazz sounds with the Zac Hurren trio and last year performed with Katie Noonan, five-time ARIA award winner. Enjoy the combined talents of Eugene Romaniuk on double bass and Felix Bloxsom on drums...; here’s the trio’s Exordium. https://www.youtube.com/watch Creative Victoria Australia Council for the Arts Rural City of Wangaratta ABC Jazz Zac Hurren

06.01.2022 Put 28 September in your diary! That’s when we will release the program for this year’s festival. In light of the restrictions within the Premier's roadmap announced on Sunday, it is unfortunately not feasible to proceed with a live audience for the Festival this year. However, we have some great artists that you can enjoy through a series of streamed events. The Board’s efforts have been focused on locking in a streaming provider that will deliver an engaging experience and ...enable people all over the world to join us. We thank all our supporters for their patience as plans have required continued adjustment. As we have learnt this year, we never know what’s on the horizon. Before COVID-19 arrived on our shores, the Board had already decided on an all-Australian theme as fitting to celebrate our 30th anniversary festival. Despite all the changes, we look forward to a series of online events that will showcase what the Wangaratta community, the Festival and the National Jazz Awards have contributed to developing Australian talent through the years. We look forward to you joining us this year, from your place, wherever that is.
