09.01.2022 Round 9 Section 1 Lawn White managed to struggle over the line against Wang Hardcourt on Saturday courtesy of their women again. White's women have controlled a...ll their matches this year and when their men are at full strength they will take some beating for the flag. Hardcourt's men kept their teams hopes alive with another comprehensive display of power and deft touch to ensure they dominated the Lawn men. It was this domination that had Hardcourt in front with the mixed sets to play but all hope was snuffed out when Lawn won the first 2 sets and put the result beyond doubt, Hardcourt weren't done yet and when Di & Andy Lucas won 8-3 it put Hardcourt within touching distance of Lawn. Wendy Hogan, Janelle Hartwig & Carolyn Shaw were Lawns best while Mario Pane, Matt Lucas & Andy Lucas controlled the men's sets for Hardcourt. Lawn Blue & Corowa had an entertaining and enthralling battle all day with the scores close for the entire match and a draw was a fitting result. Wang Lawn left Corowa thinking they had drawn an epic battle with Corowa only for Border Sercuity to expose a scoring blunder when checking the scoresheet at the Border Crossing. An alert policeman exposed the mistake when realising a vital set won by Lawn was written in the wrong way around. Border Security then decided to allow the Lawn team back into their home state after realising they were actually WINNERS and not losers as previously thought. Lawn Blue had none better than Kim "Light" Brown & Susie "Helen" Bennett (3 sets each)and Emily "Baz" Brown. Corowa's best were Darrell "Woollen" Spencer, Matt "Pine" Forrest & Craig "Frank" Spencer. Section 2 The closest match of the round was between fierce rivals Everton Red & Myrrhee, most matches go to the wire and Saturday's encounter was no exception. Myrrhee jumped Everton early and won the first 3 sets but as all good teams do, Everton rallied and took the next 3 and took a 3 game advantage heading into the mixed sets. It was here that an unusual occurence occured, their were 3 Mother & Son combinations on the sheet 2 for Myrrhee and 1 for Everton which I'm sure would be hard to beat anywhere. Myrrhee managed to win 2 of the 3 mixed sets but the Noel Kneebone & Julie Deretic 8-1 win for Everton tied the game ledger but Myrrhee had more sets and so gained more points. The Van Berlo's (Dylan & Cathy) and the Griffin's (Di & Daniel) were Myrrhee's best and for Everton Red the Kneebone's (Femur Ben, Tibia Ruth & Patella Noel) and Rob Findlay were the best. The Everton Blue - Boorhaman match proved to be another close encounter that was only decided with the final blow as the margin was only 1 game. Everton & Boorhaman trade sets as the Everton men held sway while the Boorhaman women proved a step ahead of Everton's. Boorhaman held a 3 game advantage heading into the mixed sets but the strength of the Everton men proved to be significant as they won 2 sets to 1 and managed to keep their opponents to as few games as posible which gave them a 5-4 set win and a 1 game advantage ensure the points. Everton Blue's Russell Bennett, Rohan Kneebone & Tim Dickinson were good and Boorhaman's stalwart Shirley Fuller reigned supreme and with Merryn Byrne (3 sets) & Sally O'Donoghue had Boorhaman close enough to smell victory. Wang Hardcourt's women were merciless against Wahgunyah Blue on Saturday and set up their eventual victory while Wahgunyah's men were just pitiless and ensured the match would go the distance. Hardcourt won 2 mixed sets which gave the victory and a glimmer of hope of playing finals. Marika Van Stekelenberg (3 sets), Tomo Moriya (3 sets) & Maria Pulvirenti were fantastic and Wahgunyah Blues Kane Palmer (3sets), Geln Bobbin & Tony Jones were efficient. Wahgunyah Red have exposed Rutherglen as pretenders after they dispatched them with ease on Saturday. The Rutherglen women were once again the leading lights for their team and at least put some respectability on the scoresheet but unfortunately the Wahgunyah men dominated their Rutherglen counterparts and when the mixed sets were played it was the men that the controlled proceedings ensure Wahgunyah were comfortable winners. Travis "Old" McDonald, Jesse "Jackpebble" Johnstone & Ethan "Hunt" Palmer were Wahgunyah's best and Rutherglen's best were Helen Fuge, Amanda Robertson & Maddie Pianto. Section 3 Wahgunyah Gold (Shaun Moore, Wayne Johnstone, Ben Plemming, Kyle) proved they are definite flag contenders with the ease that they dispatched Wahgunyah United (Rob Hill, Brad Schmidt, Ezz Lutz, Kellie Storer) on Saturday. Woorage (Skip Peiper, Mark Knoth, Annika Knoth, Bron) returned to the winners list with a victory over the improving Chiltern Red (Hamish Smyth, Ben beattie, Amelia Beattie, Grace Bithisel) Results Section 1 Lawn Blue 5-61 def Corowa 4-53, Lawn White 5-49 def Wang Hardcourt 4-47 Section 2 Wang Hardcourt 5-50 def Wahgunyah Blue 4-42, Myrrhee 5-52 def Everton Red 4-52, Section 3 Wahgunyah Gold 5-44 def Wahgunyah United 1-19, Wooragee 5-42 def Chiltern Red 1-17, Wahgunyah Black Vs Chiltern White NO Scoresheet returned Under 15 Ladders Section 1 Lawn Blue 48, Corowa 39, Lawn White 37.5, Wang Hardcourt 30.5 Section 2 Wahgunyah Red 55, Everton Red 55, Myrrhee 52.5, Rutherglen 44, Wang Hardcourt 35, Everton Blue 32, Wahgunyah Blue 28, Boorhaman 18.5 Section 3 Wahgunyah Red 35.5, Wahgunyah Gold 34, Wahgunyah Black , Wahgunyah United 26.5, Chiltern Red 19, Wooragee 18, Chiltern White 5.5

06.01.2022 Round 7 Section 1 Corowa have finally found some form and consistency to once again be considered a flag aspirant after their convincing win against Wang Hardco...urt on Saturday. Corowa jumped Hardcourt early but as good teams do Hardcourt fought back to level up the match with 5 sets to play. Corowa responded in a true contender manner winning the next 4 sets while Hardcourt added a token set to finsh the day. Corowa always appeared to be in control of the match although Hardcourt did provide some stubborn resistance. Corowa's best contributors were Peter Filliponi & Claire Davidson (3 sets each) while Darrell Spencer and Amanda Hemphill played the support roles. Hardcourt had none better than the veterans Mario Pane & Di Lucas and Andy Lucas & Kylie Doig made Corowa work for their victory. Lawn Blue finally have bragging rights over co-tenants Lawn White after the first 2 matches were draws. Blue and White traded sets as has happened in the past with Whites women controlling their sets while the Blue men held sway in theirs. With the mixed sets to play Blue held a slender game advantage but when White won the first set easily they had taken the lead, Blue weren't finshed yet and they held on the win the remaining 2 sets for victory. Blues best Jono Keys & Robert Voss (3 sets each) and Susie Bennett, Whites best were Janelle Hartwig (3 sets), Carolyn Shaw and Shaun Ablazej. Section 2 Rutherglen had a comfortable win over Boorhaman on Saturday and they have enhance their stature as a Premier team in Section 2. Rutherglen were never troubled although Boorhaman managed to push Rutherglen to their limits, it was bridge too far and the result was never in doubt. Rutherglen had good performers in Rachel Crawford, Reg Quick & Helen Fuge while Boorhaman's best were Colleen Kindris, Judd Kuschert & Dale Robinson. The match between the Section 2 heavyweights, Wahgunyah Red & Everton Red proved to be a tense and tight match. Wahgunyah Red had the better of the tie break sets which proved to be the difference in the end. Wahgunyah Red held a 2 set & 8 game advantage heading into the mixed sets but Everton hit back early with a 8-2 win and followed up with an 8-5 win to hit the lead which meant in was left to the youngest members of the Wahgunyah team (Max Harvey & Ethan Palmer) to fly the flag for Wahgunyah which they did aplomb and a maturity beyond their years. Best for Wahgunyah Max Harvey & Ethan Palmer (3 sets each) and Kylie Grieg. Everton Red were best served by Ben Kneebone, Jo Barron & Ruth Kneebone. Wahgunyah Blue held on to defeat Everton Blue in a tense finish, after Wahgunyah appeared headed for an easy victory where they were comfortably leading heading into the mixed sets. Everton finally found their mojo winning the first 2 sets to hold a glimmer hope but Wahgunyah snuffed out any hope with a 8-3 win. Glen Bobbin, Tye Callow & Mark Webb controlled the mens sets for Wahgunyah while Russell Bennett, Mellanie Hellebrand & Eleisha Kneebone were Evertons best. Wang Hardcourt & Myrrhee played a thrilling draw on Saturday and it was Myrrhee's experience in the tie break sets that enabled them to achieve a draw. Hardcourt always looked in control of the match and leading into the mixed sets they were almost in an unbeatable position holding a 8 game advantage. When Chris Nichols & Curtis Hines won 8-1 Hardcourt were never going to lose but Myrrhee showed their true fighting spirit and fought back to win the last 2 sets to share the points with Hardcourt. Lucas Alexander, Curtis Hines & Kath Trainer were Hardcourts best while Myrrhee had Rob Seymour, Daniel Griffin & Robyn Oliver as their best. Section 3 Wahgunyah Gold (Jake Goddard, Shaun Moore, Wayne Johnstone, Jaxx Johnstone) were just too good for Chiltern White (Maree Murphy, Amy Ziebarth, Bridie Murphy, Sarah Birthisel) who were never in the hunt against a team that will feature in the finals. Jaxx Johnstone was the standout player and looks a player of the future. Wahgunyah Red (Peter Trebely, Kane Palmer, Andrew Palmer, Ollie Strove) proved they will be there again at the business end of the season with a convincing win against Chiltern Red (Molly Williams, Hamish Smyth, Millie Beatie, Grace Birthisel). Wahgunyah United (David Strachan, Matt Davis, Liam Hill, Kellie Storer) have steadily risen up the ladder without fan fare of the other Wahgunyah teams and their performance against Wooragee (Eiylish McRostie, Annika Knoth, Mark Knoth, Bec Davis) was workmanlike and convincing.
