24.01.2022 EVENT CANCELLED More information to come.
23.01.2022 CANCELLATION NOTICE We have regretfully made the decision to cancel the 2021 Wangaratta Marathon and Funrun. Unfortunately government requirements for hosting an event like this in COVID times have proven very restrictive to confidently run the event. All participants would have been required to arrive, run and leave. That is not the community event that we had envisaged. We apologise to the many people in the community that were looking forward to participating in t...he marathon and fun runs. Thanks to all that have registered for the 2021 event. Registered participants can go back to the registration page and indicate whether they would like a full refund or transfer their registration to the 2022 event. We have started planning for the March 2022 event, and hopefully by then we can provide the kind of event that will challenge the professional runners, and also encourage our community to get the whole family involved in a fun day out. The date for the 2022 event will be confirmed in the next few weeks.
01.01.2022 WANGARATTA MARATHON AND FUN RUN 2021 AND ON The Wangaratta Marathon and Fun Runs is a community event, now run by the Wangaratta Chronicle, which encourages health and fitness across all age groups, supports and attracts some of the best distance runners within Victorian and throughout the country, and also seeks to help promote the rural city and its attractions nationwide. The annual event held on the second weekend in March and celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2020... and, despite the challenges of summer bushfires, still attracted more than 1050 participants in the various race distance categories of the 42km marathon, 21km half marathon, 10km, 5km and 2km. The event has been built up over the years to be one of Wangaratta’s most celebrated annual sporting events, with the 2km distance encouraging not just primary school students to be active in the spirit of ongoing government health campaigns but also their parents/guardians to join in and share the experience together. The event engenders a sense of community goodwill and pride. Whilst the specific focus of the event is more people moving more often as opposed to raising funds, it is pleasing that more than $50,000 to date has been able to be donated back to local and regional groups and charities. This is despite entry prices for this event being much less than their counterparts. This event unashamedly looks to draw people to Wangaratta to enjoy the beautiful path networks and environmental surrounds of our thriving rural city. Thanks to our event partner Garry Nash, timing partner Alpine Timing and all our sponsors.
