08.01.2022 WHY WATER SAFETY? You may wonder why we teach Water Safety and Open Water skills in our swimming program. Evidence has shown us that adults and children who can swim the four competitive strokes, can still drown. Being able to perform a stroke may not be enough to save you in our many different waterways. ... Our drowning statistics show us that we need to continue to educate our community members about aquatic safety. Aquatic safety is more holistic than just swimming strokes up and down the pool. Often families confirm their children’s safety by being able to swim a desired distance of a competitive stoke and we know there is so much more involved than that. Simulated Open Water Activities are an ideal way to bring the outside aquatic environment into aquatic facilities. Many facilities will conduct the following activities in some format. Students that are involved in Open Water Programs need to have developed certain skill in order to safely participate in a Simulated Open Water Program. Some of the following activities should be presented to the students Weed beds Weed tunnels, weed hoops Slippery banksentries and rescues Underwater swimming Lifejackets Overturned boats and escaping Boogie boards It is imperative students have the opportunity to participate in some basic aquatic skills prior to them participating in a circuit. Let’s look at some of the activities and explore the basic aquatic skill students need. Movement through water Balance. vertical and horizontal Breath control Submersion without goggles Vertical and lateral rotation Submerge and recover, learning which is way up Sculling
