19.01.2022 The Waratah Football Club makes the following statement in relation to the Men’s Division 2 game between St Mary’s Football Club and the Waratah Football Club on Saturday the 14th of November 2020. We regret the need to make a statement on this matter. However a published Facebook post which did not include all of the relevant information, has unfairly brought the conduct of our players into question, which we feel needs to be addressed. 1. We do not believe the game was a p...articularly fiery contest as reported. 2. At the Waratah Football Club we strive to play disciplined football that is in the spirit of the game. We are extremely proud of the conduct of our players that took the field in this regard. 3. No Waratah player was penalised or sent off for behaviour that threatened the welfare of a St Mary’s player. 4. The St Mary’s team were penalised for maybe one or two late hits. 5. One free kick was awarded against St Mary’s for an elevated rugby style tackle just prior to the 3/4 time siren. 6. A number of 50 metre penalties were paid throughout the entirety of the game against St Mary’s for what we understand to have been deemed continual abuse of umpires or disputes of decisions made. 7. St Mary’s were penalised with one yellow card during the third quarter for what we understand was deemed continual abuse of umpires after a 50m penalty was paid. 8. To our complete surprise during the 3/4 time break, the St Mary’s players and coaching team approached and players shook hands. 9. A representative of St Mary’s, believed to be the coach, advised that our players are getting yellow cards for talking back to umpires, next they will get red cards and I don’t want them to get red cards so I’m sorry we are not playing anymore. We understand that the AFLNT are working towards clarifying and resolving the outcome of yesterday’s game. We will participate in this investigation as required. We respect the work of Umpires who without which, our great game could not be played each week. We appreciate the time that these individuals give to ensure that we can continue to play games and acknowledge that these individuals umpire multiple games over a weekend. We respect the St Mary’s Football Club and their volunteers, who without which we understand clubs could not function. We look forward to our next Div 2 game against St Mary’s which will be at Gardens Oval on 7 February 2021.
