25.01.2022 A new path at Waratah replaces a steep and slippery path opposite the Bischoff Hotel. The new path is level and comes off the footpath at Smith St and follows t...he barrier fence to the gazebo. The path was built and funded by Council. It replaces a steep path opposite the Bischoff Hotel that was shaded by a large pine tree which also made it a slip hazard. See more

24.01.2022 One of our waratah hidden treasures

24.01.2022 After seeing some good reviews and photos on this site we decided to make the trek to Philosoper Falls yesterday. It was worth the trip. The journey really star...ted at the lovely old Tin mining town of Waratah (fuel, food and refreshments are available at the petrol station). Waratah Falls (in town) were a bonus worth having. 10 km drive out of town gets you to the Philosopher Falls turnoff on the right (clearly signposted). A short gravel road takes you to the carpark (no water, shelter or toilets at the carpark). An inconspicuous but marked spot leads to the entry point for the walk to the Falls. The walk itself (about 45 minutes each way) is a highlight and worth doing irrespective of the falls. The path is well formed and well maintained and is a relatively easy mostly downhill hike (just don’t forget that makes it uphill on the way back!). The old growth forest is amazing. An excellent footbridge takes you over the Arthur River (which feeds the falls). The real challenge (for some) is the well-constructed staircase leading down to the falls viewing platform. I counted 210 steps. The viewing platform provides a reasonable view of the falls but surrounding heavy forest limits the view and you are still positioned a long way above the base of the falls, so you don’t get a complete view. We could not find a way to get to the base of the falls. The return journey up the steps and along the trail to the carpark was pretty arduous and required a few stops along the way (making it considerably longer than 45 minutes). It might be difficult for young kids or older people. Overall, a great visit and well worth the exercise. (The photos begin at Waratah and end at Philospher Falls) See more

17.01.2022 TASMANIA *** SNOW ALMOST TO SEA LEVEL *** Hi all As youve probably seen over the last few days, a major snowfall event is on the way starting Monday evening an...d running through until Thursday. The worst conditions, or the best depending on how you look at it, will be for the whole day Tuesday. Weve held off on posting until today as we like to be as certain as possible on the finer details. A cold front will cross Tasmania during Monday, followed by a very cold southerly flow as a slow moving low pressure system passes to the south before moving to the southeast and becoming complex on Tuesday. Cold southerly winds will tend southwesterly on Wednesday as the area of low pressure moves slowly southeastwards over the Tasman Sea. This low pressure system is very slow moving and rather large. Holding fairly still long enough to drive freezing Southerly winds over the state for a few days. This is the good part. We are confident snow will settle to 150 metres, with flurries reaching sea level. Whilst these systems are complex and unpredictable, this looks to be all but a done deal as of today. Please be aware that there is every possibility that it may settle lower. This system will dump enough snow, that you can expect it to hang around on the ground for quite some time. Snow lovers can be assured that the states Ski Fields will have brilliant coverage. Expect major traffic disruptions on the states elevated roads for a few days. Warnings will be issued as forecast. Most importantly, take it easy if chasing snow and ENJOY!! -Justin

15.01.2022 Its snowing in parts of Tasmania! It was certainly a fresh morning for many of us, but lets spare a thought for the residents of Waratah, in the states north-west, who woke up to this winter wonderland. : Janine Hanna.

15.01.2022 A pre COVID visit to Waratah Falls.

14.01.2022 Police are reminding people planning on bushwalking, particularly in mountainous areas, to be prepared and aware of potential risks in Tasmanian terrain. As w...ere approaching the middle of winter, its timely to remind people planning on bushwalking to be adequately prepared, said Inspector Steve Jones from Western Search and Rescue. Tasmanias unpredictable weather, including below freezing temperatures, high winds, rain and snow, can make bushwalking treacherous, particularly in the highland areas. I urge anyone planning on bushwalking to check the conditions before departing, and if the forecast conditions are poor, delaying the walk until conditions improve, said Inspector Jones. While the Westpac Rescue Helicopter is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and technology, there are occasions where conditions prevent its use, and the need for search parties to be deployed on foot can prolong a rescue. Although being well prepared cant always prevent the inevitable, weve previously seen cases where bushwalkers arent suitably prepared and end up needing help from rescue services. Police and other emergency service providers will always respond to requests for assistance by bushwalkers, however, some rescue missions could have been prevented if people had been better prepared. Our search and rescue personnel are highly skilled and trained but they too can be subject to dangerous conditions, as can the volunteer walkers who also offer their assistance during these searches. We want everyone to enjoy Tasmanias wilderness safely. Bushwalking Tips: Prior preparation in both equipment and personal fitness. Ensure you have an adequate level of fitness for the bushwalk you intend to undertake; Take appropriate clothing and footwear and regardless of the season take a waterproof jacket; adequate food and water, first aid kit. Research the intended trip maps, guide books, Google earth, expected weather forecasts. Let someone know before you go route, expected return time, equipment etc. Prepare emergency plans & escape routes. Use of mobile phones and PLBs: A mobile phone may not work in all areas. Personal Location Beacons should be carried as well and used in the case of an emergency. They can be purchased or hired from a number of outlets. When activated the PBLs can direct rescue teams to the exact location.

14.01.2022 Waratah now has a publicly accessible AED. Its located beside the post boxes outside the Post Office. The community has got right behind this potentially life saving initiative funded by a couple of generous but anonymous locals. 30 people attended training last Saturday afternoon testament to community spirit being alive and well in our community.
