21.01.2022 Meet our educators - Chris Johnson. Chris is a compassionate and empathetic peer worker with a genuine interest in holistic wellbeing and walking alongside peers on their recovery journey. Chris has lived experience of mental ill-health, literacy, chronic pain, and homelessness challenges. Chris recently graduated with a Cert IV in Mental Health Peer Work and facilitates a support group for women with PTSD. Chris believes that the recovery process happens in a supportive, n...on-judgmental, strengths-based, trauma-informed environment which sees people for who they are on a holistic level and not just a diagnosis. Chris says "My recovery/discovery journey started when a peer worker walked alongside me, supported my choices and instilled hope that I could have a good life when I was at a stage when I saw no hope for any future. They have sought out and provided me with opportunities for education and to participate in self-awareness workshops which enabled me to find my identity outside challenges. The peer support workers enabled me to live a good life."

08.01.2022 Meet our educators! Carli Sheers is passionate about WARCA as she believes that the educational approach to recovery is powerful. She says it helps people to make use of their talents and strengths, explore possibilities, develop their skills and achieve their goals and ambitions. At WARCA, staff become coaches who help people find their own solutions; participating in courses replace therapy as students become experts in their own self-care. In comparison, the therapeutic... model focuses on problems, deficits and symptoms and reinforces the notion that expertise lies with professionals. Carli uses her lived experience expertise to provide a different approach and perspective to mental health consultancy and customised education and training. This helps organisations, researchers, individuals, businesses, and government to focus on recovery and recovery-oriented language/practice to improve health outcomes for the community and people with lived experience of mental health and/or AOD issues. Carli is sought out for speaking at state and national mental health conferences, and provides consultancy on a local, state and national level.
