25.01.2022 So good to see our bush regenerating after the devastating fires earlier this year. Our natural vegetation has evolved over thousands of years to regenerate after fire. Unfortunately our unique and wonderful wildlife will not recover so quickly from the enormous loss of life experienced. It has been estimated that over 1 billion native animals and birds were killed in these fires. Our native species have never been so endangered. Their future is uncertain. The impact of clima...te change with wildfires and drought ever increasing in frequency and duration needs to be ameliorated through improved land management practices and political action as will as individual action. Another major threat to our wildlife is the destruction of their habitat as our urban areas continually expand. As urban expansion accelerates we all have a responsibility to replace the lost habitat by planting native plants in our gardens and public areas. It does not make sense to replace these losses with landscapes dominated by exotic plant species that favour invasive animal species that threaten our fire affected native species whilst providing minimal habitat for our native fauna. Most of the environmental weeds that are invading natural habitats are garden escapees. Removing these species from our gardens and surrounding bush also makes sense. Nature needs nurturing . We have a responsibility to future generations to preserve and enhance our natural environment. Our country matters. Native plants for Australian gardens please. #worldenvironmentday2020 #wariapendi #australiannativeplants #ourcountry #country #fire #bush #bushheritageaustralia #habitat #habitatgarden #endangeredspecies #endangeredanimals #habitatloss #sustainable #sustainableliving #sustainability #sustainablelandscaping #environmentalweed See more

10.01.2022 Prepare Now for Spring Plantings For areas that experience severe frosts, it is now best to delay plantings until the soil begins to warm and the threat of heavy frosts has passed. If your frosts are only mild, winter plantings can be very successful.... To achieve the best from your spring plantings, planning and soil preparations are critical. Bring winter colour into your garden with winter flowering bird attracting natives. As many nurseries run out of stock during the spring rush and if you are undertaking extensive farm tree plantings or major landscaping projects, it is best to order your plants well in advance to avoid being disappointed. 08.01.2022 A very big thank-you to Gerry Smith and her co-workers at Corrigen shire council in Western Australia for their very kind and generous donation of plants and tree guards to support the Southern highlands Koala Sanctuary. After seeing on TV the sad plight of our wildlife during the devastating bushfires that ravaged NSW earlier this year, Gerry and her co-workers wanted to give a helping hand. Concerned that their fundraising efforts would be consumed by administrative costs, ...Gerry contacted Wariapendi Native Nursery to organise a supply of koala feed trees to assist in the recovery and preservation of our iconic koala. Knowing that the Southern Highlands Koala Sanctuary was grossly under-funded and totally committed to the preservation of our endangered koala population, Warren of Wariapendi approached Thelma Johnson from the sanctuary to see if they would like some koala feed trees to revegetate some bare areas in their 1400 acre property where they have preserved the bush and dedicated the property as a koala sanctuary. Photo shows Themla Johnson (left) and Charlotte Staun (right) receiving the trees from Warren Walker at Wariapendi Native Nursery.
