25.01.2022 Nowee family magic! A renowned and influential painting family since the inception of Warlayirti Artists, the Nowee women paint their mother and grandmother’s Country along the Canning Stock Route. The circle featuring prominently in each of the women’s paintings is Minyurrpa, a sacred rock hole which the family would traditionally walk around collecting the abundant mangarri (bush tucker). Sister’s Frances and Geraldine are the matriarchs of this family and have paved th...e way for their daughters Serena and Latisha. The late Theresa Nowee was a significant artists in her own right. Geraldine is also a reliable arts worker and Frances has recently been re-elected as a director of the art centre. You can find these works and more by the Nowee family on our website (link in bio). 25.01.2022 MOTIKA TJUKURRPA Troopie’s are an icon and essential part of daily life in remote Australia. They take us to the art centre, to exhibition in the big city, on bush trips and rescue missions, and this year a convoy of Troopies will be taking us home.... In May we’re embarking on an epic 1,500km Return to Country camp. All the way from Balgo, to Yagga Yagga, Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay), to Kiwirrkurra and Kunawarritji and up the Canning Stock Route back to Balgo. This is all the Country we paint; all the Country we are from. Our Elder’s haven’t been to this Country for a long time, and some of their kids and grandkids have never stepped foot on their ancestral land. Now is the time. But we have a problem. Our old bush car doesn’t have the grunt to get us there. We need a new troopy! Can you help? We’re hoping to fundraise enough money to get us our dream motika! Follow the link in our bio for more details and to see all the uniquely Balgo perks to donating! https://chuffed.org//motika-tjukurrpa-help-balgo-mob-get-a Please share this far and wide we need all the help we can get! *We’re a registered charity all donations are tax deductable. #motikatjukurrpa #balgomob #warlayirtiartists #oncountry #bushtrip #toyota #troopie #fundraiser #donate

Keep an eye on our Story and Feed over the next week for a sneak peak of our silk dying workshop... REPOST @desert_mob In late 2019, as part of a trip to Fremantle, artists of @warlayirti_artists visited the @berndt.museum, where they were shown the incredible Balgo archive, including amazing works on paper by the old people. These works were produced using fabric ink, long ago left over from silk dying techniques, adding further historical layers to the works. 03.01.2022 It’s Desert Mob market day today! https://gallery.balgoart.org.au/product-ca/desert-mob-2020/

02.01.2022 ||REPOST FROM @agencyprojects ||| . Warlayirti Artists is an Arts and Cultural centre located in Balgo (Wirrimanu), Western Australia, which was founded in 1987. The cooperative brings together painters from the Aboriginal communities of Balgo, Mulan, Ringer Soak, Billiluna and Yakka Yakka (closed in 2005). Warlayirti Artists represent 8 language groups, each with their own individual stories, Law and Tjukurrpa (dreaming). It is recognised as one the Peak Aboriginal Community... Controlled Arts organisations in Australia. Most of the senior artists painting in Balgo today grew up in the Missions, a long way from where their ancestral Country lies, deep in the Tanami and Great Sandy deserts. Their ability to go back to this Country is hindered by the remote and rugged terrain, cost and access to resources. They connect to Country through painting, and produce works which tell the story of their homelands, and to keep their culture and their connection to Country strong. Until this year, it has been 10 years since the Balgo artists have taken any big trips back to Country solely for the purpose of painting, intergenerational transfer of cultural knowledge and creating a cohesive body of work which tells the story of the diversity and vast distances between each artists’ Country which they can share with their families. Agency’s NGURRA KUTJUWARRA (Together on Country) campaign is raising funds to support Warlayirti Artists to facilitate more frequent trips onto Country trips which improve the social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of the Artists and their families. Importantly, these trips will connect young people and families to their country, strengthen kinship systems within family groups, and promote intergenerational transfer of knowledge before this knowledge is lost. Activities on these trips will include painting, artefact making, mapping Country, Caring for Country, collecting bush foods and medicines and visiting sacred sites. To support NGURRA KUTJUWARRA, please click on the link in our bio and make a donation of any size. All donations are tax deductible. Yarti (thank you). Image courtesy @seedstori @warlayirti_artists
