23.01.2022 Today we’re profiling one of our most prolific volunteers. Morag Palombo has done 27 parkruns but has volunteered a massive 125 times. She’s definitely one of the people that makes parkun happen. 1. The year I started running? 2016 2. Who or what inspired me to start? My husband George encouraged me to start by walking. 3. The year I did my first parkrun and where? Started with volunteering then did my first 5k walk on 12/03/2016 at Warner Lakes.... 4. What do I love about parkrun? The community spirit and that no matter what your ability, you are always encouraged and welcomed. 5. What’s the longest distance I’ve ever run? 5km 6. What is my bucket list running event? I don’t really have one at the moment but one day I would like to be able to go for a run with George although I’m sure a lot slower than what he’s used to. 7. What is my most memorable running event or achievement and why? Completing the 5K event walking at the Sunshine Coast. It showed me that if my put my mind to it, anything is possible. 8. What does my training look like each week? Just started walking before work. 9. The reason why I keep running? To be a fitter and healthier me. Thanks Morag and keep up the great work.

23.01.2022 Today’s featured runner is one of our fastest. I first met Paul Gourlay in 2015 at Chermside parkrun. He’d only just started this running caper yet he still went around in 20:41. Since then Paul has done 115 parkruns (44 at Warner Lakes). He’s volunteered 16 times and sits at number 6 on the all time fastest at WL at 16:17. He has a parkrun PB of 15:55 at Sandgate and I know he went down there last week and ran the course in 15:28. This guy has improved phenomenally! He’s als...o made running his career and life through his work as a PT and coaching. Personally I’ve admired his ability to work to a plan (he calls it a process) and to trust it will yield results. 1. The year I started running? 2015 2. Who or what inspired me to start running? Initially weight loss but then I discovered I was pretty good at running! My uncle is a huge inspiration now as he continues to run every day at the age of 68 and he’s pretty quick too! He also made an appearance at WL parkrun last June on a visit over from Scotland! (PS he ran it in 20:12 and 19:46 in his two attempts and he’s aged 68) 3. The year I did my first parkrun and where? 2015 at Chermside 4. What do I love about parkrun? The social aspect and knowing everyone is there for the love of it! One of my most enjoyable experiences at parkrun is being timekeeper. Getting to see everyone cross the finish line is pretty cool! 5. What’s the longest distance I’ve ever run? Marathon 6. What is my bucket list running event? Boston and London marathons 7. What is my most memorable running event or achievement and why? Samford 10k fun run last year! I always wanted to feel the experience of finishing first and ‘breaking the tape.’ I got to do that at Samford. Such a great and well organised local event as well! 8. What does my training look like each week? I run every day clicking up an average of 100-120km per week. Mostly easy runs with 1 or 2 speed/tempo/hills sessions every week. 9. The reason why I keep running? It’s my happy place! I just love to run! For me there’s no better feeling in the world than heading out for a run! I also love the running community and being able to share experiences with many like minded people! I’ve made and continue to make many great friendships through running! Thanks for sharing Paul and I love the double ice cream picture. We look forward to parkrun resuming so you can get under 16 minutes at Warner which you’ll surely do in your current form.

22.01.2022 We are all missing parkrun. For many of us it’s become part of our weekly ritual. For others it’s how we started our fitness journey. And for some it’s a chance to be part of a community of like minded people. But how well do you know your fellow runners? Given we’re all enduring physical social distancing, I’d like to use this page over the next few weeks to let us get to know some of our regular parkrunners. Every couple of days we’ll feature one of our regulars. If you’d l...ike to be featured I want you to cut and paste the questions below, answer them and message the page (don’t put it in the comments) along with a photo of you at WL parkrun. I’ll put one up every couple of days starting tomorrow. 1. The year I started running? 2. Who or what inspired me to start running? 3. The year I did my first parkrun and where? 4. What do I love about parkrun? 5. What’s the longest distance I’ve ever run? 6. What is my bucket list running event? 7. What is my most memorable running event or achievement and why? 8. What does my training look like each week? 9. The reason why I keep running? 10. Parkrun ID number (I won’t print this but I’ll use it to pull up your run and volunteer stats) 11. A photo at parkrun 12. Anything running related you’d like to add

22.01.2022 Well done to the 120 runners who participated this morning in pleasantly cool and damp conditions. Our first Male finisher was a first timer at Warner Lakes Matthew Thompson in 17:31 and our first female was Laura Bowart in 22:49. Our top age grade performance was also Matthew Thompson with 76.78%. Thank you to our volunteers Carol BOWDEN, Georgina KEELER, Ronald KEELER, Peter LEWIS, William PARSONS, John ROYCE, Lorraine SHATTE, Christine WALKER, Sarah WARDLAW, Renee WEST, M...aree WHITMORE We still require volunteers for the upcoming weeks. Let us know if you can help. We will also be putting on an extra event on New Year's Day at 7:00. We will not be doing a Christmas Day parkrun, however, it is our understanding a few other local parkruns will be putting one on. The chance is there to do a tourist run on Christmas Day and a home run at Warner on NYD. The results have been uploaded to the web as the photos from today are on our Facebook page.

21.01.2022 Hi All, We are in need of a timekeeper for this Saturday. If you can help out please let us know! ... Thanks, Patrick.

20.01.2022 Marshal needed for tomorrow Warner Lakes parkrun is short of 1 marshal for 7/3/20. Please respond to this post if you can help.

18.01.2022 Hi All, We are still looking for volunteers for Saturday. If anyone can assist with the following roles please let us know ASAP. 2x Marshal... 1x Timekeeper Thanks Courtney

18.01.2022 Today we’re going to feature a runner I’m sure you’re all familiar with. At 6’5 he’s hard to miss and he’s pretty quick too. Patrick Sims story is remarkable. At the beginning of 2017 (a bit over 3 years ago) he weighed 130kg. He did his first parkrun in 2018. He’s done 96 parkruns (78 at Warner) and volunteered 15 times including being our latest run director this year. He’s embraced parkrun and running in general big time. Patrick has lost over 50kg and has transformed him...self. He recently ran Warner Lakes parkrun in 18:04. When I asked him how it was achieved his answer was simple, I ate a lot less and ran a lot more. He has done this on his own - no dieticians, personal trainers or surgery. He set himself a target to get into shape and the result is evident in the photos he’s shared. 1. The year I started running? 2017 2. Who or what inspired me to start running? Keep weight off! 3. The year I did my first parkrun and where? 2018 Warner Lakes 4. What do I love about parkrun? Like-minded positive people 5. What’s the longest distance I’ve ever run? 50km 6. What is my bucket list running event? Athens marathon 7. What is my most memorable running event or achievement and why? 2019 River Run 100 50k relay with Paul Dack - we picked up first finisher! 8. What does my training look like each week? A lot of loops around Warner Lakes for a start! Plus South Pine Striders sessions. 9. The reason why I keep running? Crippling addiction... I mean I just love it! Patrick has said his next parkrun goal is a sub 18 minute parkrun. A pretty sure bet I’d say. This shows what parkrun can do that reality weight loss shows cannot - sustainable lifestyle change without external help. Patrick thanks for sharing.

17.01.2022 We are going to start our series of profiles of our Warner Lakes parkrunners with our Event Director Colin Whittaker. Colin emigrated to Australia from Durban South Africa in 2009. Those of you who are familiar with South Africa and Durban in particular would know it has a rich running history and a love of the Comrades 90km ultramarathon. Col has been involved with Warner Lakes parkrun since it’s inception. He’s done 243 parkruns (147 at WL) and volunteered a mighty 85 times.... He took over as run director in January 2019 when the founding director Laura Bowart stepped down due to other commitments. 1. The year I started running? I started running seriously in 1989. 2. Who or what inspired me to start running? I had seen an 80 year old Wally Hayward complete the Comrades Marathon (90km event in South Africa) and thought if he can do it then I should be able to do it. 3. The year I did my first parkrun and where? March 2014 Bunyaville parkrun 4. What do I love about parkrun? That anyone can do it and it is free! 5. What’s the longest distance I’ve ever run? 90km 13 times over 13 years 6. What is my bucket list running event? 500 parkruns 7. What is my most memorable running event or achievement and why? Finishing my first Comrades I managed to complete this after spraining my ankle 7 days before the event and having treatment each day before the event. 8. What does my training look like each week? Not much at the moment trying to get over an Achilles injury. 9. The reason why I keep running? Try to keep fit and manage my weight! Col - that’s for sharing. After 13 comrades I’m amazed your Achilles still functions at all!

17.01.2022 Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow. Don’t forget your barcode.

17.01.2022 Hello Warner Lakes parkrunners. We still require the following volunteers for Saturday: 2 x marshals 1 x tail walker... Please comment below if you can help out

15.01.2022 It was great to see a number of familiar faces at Warner Lakes parkrun this morning. It was also good to have 14 first timers do their first parkrun. The break must have been good for a number of you as there were 7 PB's in the first 9 finishers. First to finish today was Mitchell Wolters (18:20-PB) while first female was Amy Liebke (20:24-PB). Well done to both of you.... Congratulations to the following people who achieved milestones: 10 parkruns - Michaela Fuster 50 parkruns - Matt Beveridge, Randall Ovens 100 parkruns - David Auret, David Marsh Please print copies of your barcodes and laminate them. A few copies were wet from sweat this morning and we should have some hotter conditions over the next few months. Note that you need to carry your barcode when you participate in case of an emergency where your ICE (In Case of Emergency contact) can be contacted. We are very grateful to the volunteers who made this event happen: Julia CATHIE, Craig DINGWALL, Liz GORDON, Amanda HARTE, Karen HARTE, Kath MCELHINNEY, Trish MCKENNA, William PARSONS, Steve PETERS, Elizabeth VEITCH, Maree WHITMORE, Caiti WILLIAMS, Lisa WILLIAMS I hope you enjoyed yourselves and that we will see you again next week. Colin

12.01.2022 Hi All, We are needing a few volunteers for this coming Saturday. If you are able to assist with any of the roles please let us know by Thursday. 1x Time Keeper... 2x Marshall 1x Tail Walker Thanks Courtney Warner Lakes parkrun Director

12.01.2022 Today’s featured parkrunner is Lisa Williams. Lisa’s parkrun story began way back in 2013 when she got involved in the early days of Sandgate parkrun and was in fact a Run Director there 5 times in 2013/14, something I was unaware of until I researched her parkrun history. Lisa has completed 164 runs in total with 77 at Warner Lakes and 60 at Sandgate. She has also volunteered an impressive 35 times. 1. The year I started running? 2012 2. Who or what inspired me to start runn...ing? To get healthy after having two kids (Caiti was 18 months old at the time) 3. The year I did my first parkrun and where? Sandgate 2013 4. What do I love about parkrun? The community vibe and meeting new people. 5. What’s the longest distance I’ve ever run? 42.2k 6. What is my bucket list running event? Queenstown Marathon 7. What is my most memorable running event or achievement and why? The Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast. I didn’t quite make the 96km, but I did manage 72km (there was a lot of walking) 8. What does my training look like each week? Due to shiftwork, it’s all over the place at the moment. 9. The reason why I keep running? To keep fit and to challenge myself. Thanks for sharing Lisa. And if you’re ever keen to take on the run director role again we’re always looking for volunteers. You kept that little piece of your parkrun journey quiet!!

10.01.2022 Today we will feature one of our keenest runners and a bloke who’s really embraced it in less than 2 years. Kim Dingwall has done 75 parkruns, with 71 at Warner Lakes. He’s also volunteered on 3 occasions. He’s pretty quick on his day, and with a PB of 20:25 he’ll be looking to join the sub 20 club. He’s one of those great guys who celebrates the good runs and calls out the bad ones for what they are (see attached Strava posts) and he enjoys a laugh and a chat as much as the ...Continue reading

10.01.2022 Hi All, We are still looking for a time keeper for Saturday. This event is unable to run without this role. If you are able to assist please let us know. If you haven't done it before don't let that deter you, we can walk you through what to do. Thanks Courtney

09.01.2022 I saw a few LEGO creations of other parkruns and thought I’d have a go at recreating Warner Lakes parkrun myself. My rule was I had to use LEGO pieces I already have in my collection. So I’m m a little short on mini figures who look like runners. And I’d love to added more detail. I’m also out of LEGO shrubs and green bricks. It just wouldn’t have looked right having Lord Voldermert, Darth Vader and storm troopers making there way to the finish line. But overall I think it captures the essence of Dragonfly Park on a Saturday morning pre-COVID. And if anyone has got any design suggestions it’s a work in progress. I’m sure I’m not the only one who is looking forward to getting back to our regular Saturday routine. In the meantime this certainly passed a few hours of time and reminded me of what we’re looking forward to. Peter

09.01.2022 International Women’s Day parkrun 7th March 2020 parkrun research tells us that women are much less likely to participate in parkrun, and parkrun is taking steps to change that. As part of these efforts parkrun is organising a global female-focused parkrun celebration on Saturday 7 March 2020, the day before International Women’s Day (IWD). We would love for our parkrun community to join parkruns worldwide in a celebration of female participation on this day.... To mark the occasion we are encouraging existing parkrunners to bring along a female friend, family member or a work colleague, especially one who has never been to parkrun before. If you wish you may also dress in purple (parkrun's chosen colour for the day, and the official colour of IWD). Warner Lakes parkrun will also have pacers from South Pine Striders doing pacing on 7/3/20.

09.01.2022 Happy 29th February 2020!!! A big thank you and also congratulations to all those who gave up the opportunity to run on this special day dealt to us due to the leap year, to be part of the even smaller cohort of people who can say they volunteered on this day. Thanks to Emma Armitage, Royce Harvey, Mark Howden, Luke Kenderick, Trish McKenna, Morag Palombo, Steve Peters, Kial Taylor and Graeme Winfield for helping to make sure this event was able to run. Thanks also for those... who have put there name down for the coming weeks, much appreciated. 248 people completed Warner Lakes parkrun today!!! You can tick this one of the bucklet list. Next 29 February that falls on a Saturday is 2048. I have to say I am impressed to see the New Years resolutions have been kept up and we have not seen a drop off in numbers since December. Welcome to the 11 people who did their first Warner Lakes parkrun today and well done to the 25 people who achieved personal bests!!! First place today with a PB time of 18:29 minutes was Peter Rankin!!! First female across the line was first timer at Warner Lakes, Helen Gray with a time of 20:10!! Kudos to you both!!! Congratulations also to: Daniel Holowaty on celebrating his 150th parkrun Paul Neuman on celebrating his 100th parkrun Lauren Guy on celebrating her 100th parkrun Nathan Boyce on celebrating his 100th parkrun Erin Carswell on celebrating her 100th parkrun (although we know she has done plenty more than that) Hope everyone enjoys the rest of your weekend and last day of Summer. Courtney & Michael Warner Lakes Run Director

08.01.2022 Today we’re going to profile someone who doesn’t run parkrun very often these days, but without whom parkrun wouldn’t run at all. Kath McElhinney or Kath Macca as we know her has volunteered 104 times in addition to 134 runs. And she’s never been to another parkrun except Warner Lakes. That’s loyalty and commitment. If ever the call goes out on a Friday night for a last minute volunteer Kath is one of the first to reply. The race directors love her. 1. The year I started runn...ing? 1990 2. Who or what inspired me to start running? My workmate had done triathlons and marathons and I had put on some weight and he offered to help me run it off. That was in 1990. In 2015 I was at a party with Lisa Bouter and Michael Dickenson and they were talking about parkrun. It sounded so good that Lisa said if I would do it she would too, and so we did and here we are 5 years later. 3. The year I did my first parkrun and where? 2015 Warner Lakes. I’ve never been to any other parkrun! 4. What do I love about parkrun? It’s a great way to connect with a group of people trying to do their best. A wonderful sense of community. It makes me happy to see achievement in any form. For me I’m happy just to make it around the track. LOL! 5. What’s the longest distance I’ve ever run? 21.1k I have completed 3 half marathons. 6. What is my bucket list running event? LOL I’m not that enthusiastic! 7. What is my most memorable running event or achievement and why? Completing my first half marathon 2:06:58. I was 27 going on 28 years of age and then at 53 a sub 30 minute parkrun at Warner Lakes on 6/08/2016 my PB and last real run 28:25. The day I hurt my knee but the next week started me volunteering seriously. 8. What does my training look like each week? Yoga, walking and heavy weights now. 9. The reason why I keep running? No running but still love parkrun and watching others do great things. Kath, thanks for your contribution and thanks for sharing your story. I reckon parkrun should get on board and provide commemorative shirts for 100 volunteers. You deserve it!

08.01.2022 As reflected in the parkrun Australia post, all parkruns in Australia have been suspended. We will keep you informed of a future start date once we have been advised. Hope to see you again soon. 18/3/20... parkrun Australia 13 hrs All parkrun events in Australia have been suspended with immediate effect due to the ongoing COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation All events will be cancelled until at least the end of March You can read more here http://parkrun.me/covid19 #loveparkrun

08.01.2022 Despite the grim predictions we had a fantastic turnout of 210 participants at Warner Lakes parkrun this morning. There were 16 first timers today and an amazing 45 PBs. A few of your finishing sprints were particularly impressive thanks to some overprotective plovers! Virtual high fives all round! First home today was Michael Bannerman (18:47) while first female was Joanne Fernandes (21:02). James Roach was first in the Age Graded results (73.69%). Well done to all of you.... We are very grateful to the volunteers who made this event happen: Emma ARMITAGE, Lisa BOUTER, Josh COOPER, Colin FLAHERTY, Maree FLAHERTY, Amiee LUFFMAN, Mark MILTON, Sathish PEKHU, Steve PETERS, Wayne PRATT, Melanie RAABE, Patrick SIMS Photos to come! Have a great week and see you next weekend! Patrick

07.01.2022 Today’s featured parkrunner has only recently started running parkrun officially although her family have been involved for some time. Kara Thomas only has 2 official runs but according to her biography she must be one of those unknown runners who often appear in the results. 1. The year I started running? On and off most of my like, cross country age champion at school, try to stay fit 2. Who or what inspired me to start running? Boarding school because running got me... out of the boarding house. My grandad was a marathon runner so he would run with me. 3. The year I did my first parkrun and where? 2020 at Warner Lakes. I only recently got my own number because I ran with my girls in the pram and could never do it properly. Dan and William would run with their ID and more recently I have been able to run all the way so joined up. 4. What do I love about parkrun? Seeing friends, being pushed to do a bit better each week, connecting with people (I’m a bit of an extrovert!) 5. What’s the longest distance I’ve ever run? Maybe 10k 6. What is my bucket list running event? I’d like to do it Tough Mudder type of event 7. What is my most memorable running event or achievement and why? Running the Mater Little Miracles events because we had premature twin boys at the Mater. One of our boys passed away after birth and while we couldn’t save Christopher we can help others by funding neonatal research. 8. What does my training look like each week? As I’m a nurse I’m running as many days as I can to keep my cardio fitness and lung capacity up just in case. I take the kids around the block or around the lake on their scooters or bikes to exercise us all. 9. The reason why I keep running? Health and fitness, to keep active with the kids. It’s amazing how many of our parkrunners do it as a family activity to stay fit and to do something together. Thanks for sharing Kara.

05.01.2022 The next runner we are featuring is one who everyone will recognise. Fay Gerrie did her first parkrun in April 2016 and hasn’t missed a single week ever since. She’s done 201 parkruns, with 199 at Warner Lakes which I suspect is the event record. She’s also volunteered 18 times. A few weeks ago we required a finish token volunteer 5 minutes before the event and Fay put her hand up. Unbeknown to us at the time this has left her stranded on 199 until we resume. I should also po...int out Fay did 52 parkruns last year alone. 1. The year I started running? 2016 2. Who or what inspired me to start running? My kids, they heard about parkrun from school and started going to train for their upcoming cross country event. The first couple of weeks I sat in the car and waited for them until I saw people walking and thought, I can do that! 3. The year I did my first parkrun and where? April 2016 Warner Lakes 4. What do I love about parkrun? Starting off my weekend with some exercise with a great bunch of people 5. What’s the longest distance I’ve ever run? About 13k 6. What is my bucket list running event? Bushy parkrun 7. What is my most memorable running event or achievement and why? My PB of 25:28 in August 2017. It took a lot of hard work and some assistance from George to get there. 8. What does my training look like each week? The past few weeks I’ve stepped it up to 3 or 4 x 5k runs per week 9. The reason why I keep running? Just for health/fitness plus I enjoy it. Fay, you’re most definitely a stalwart who encapsulates so much of what parkrun is all about. Thanks for sharing.

04.01.2022 Marshal needed for 7/3/20 Warner Lakes parkrun is short of 1 marshal for 7/3/20. Please respond to this post if you can help.

02.01.2022 Today we’re going to feature another of our regulars Emma Armitage. Emma has done 129 parkruns at 19 different locations including one in Japan. She’s done 61 runs at Warner Lakes and volunteered an impressive 25 times. She credits parkrun with helping her on her weight loss journey as I’m sure so many of us can relate to. And she’s got the pictures to prove it. She did her first run at WL in 38:08 and has a best of 27:09. 1. The year I started running? 2011 2. Who or what in...spired me to start running? I wanted to get fitter and healthier and a girlfriend from work challenged me to do the jetty to jetty 5K in 2011 3. The year I did my first parkrun and where? 13/09/2014 at Mitchelton 4. What do I love about parkrun? The social community. I have made so many friends and connections through parkrun. It’s always so nice to come down and see a smiling face. And it’s also a family event for me. My husband. My dad. My daughter (well, she doesn’t exactly run haha) 5. What’s the longest distance I’ve ever run? 21.1k 6. What is my bucket list running event? London half marathon 7. What is my most memorable running event or achievement and why? Finishing my first half marathon. I did it with my 70-year-old dad and my best friend. I cried. Yes, what a sook. Haha. 8. What does my training look like each week? 3 x 5k runs. 1 x 10kish run, 1 x PT session and 2x group fitness classes (no rest for the wicked) 9. The reason why I keep running? For my own time, self-care and my own headspace. It’s also good for my mental health. And to be able to see running friends, of course! It’s always great to see your smiling face at Dragonfly Park and thanks for sharing.

01.01.2022 Hi All, We still require a finish tokens volunteer for tomorrow. If you can please assist let us know as soon as possible. Thanks Courtney
