22.01.2022 Hi All, Just to let you know that George (the Bronze statue in the memorial park in Warragamba) has had two medals removed from his chest about 3 weeks ago. We don’t know who has done this. It is a pity that this has occurred in our community, especially when it was this community that raised the funds to pay for George. ... If you have any information could you please pass it on to the Warragamba Anzac Committee. Please do not post names on this thread. Warragamba ANZAC Committee

Katie is one of more than 500 young leaders who have participated in our Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge over the past decade - all are now proud custodians of the Spirit of Kokoda and we are proud of them all." -- Charlie Lynn

15.01.2022 LOVE THIS....DON'T KNOW WHO CREATED IT.

15.01.2022 A soldier, who at first glance you would think is asleep. The photograph is of an Australian soldier killed in the German second line, which was held throughout... the night by the 5th Australian Division during the Battle of Fromelles, which was fought on the 19th and 20th of July 1916. It is the most profound and saddest photograph I have seen of our soldiers in war. The photograph was taken on the morning of the 20th of July after the Germans had re-occupied their trenches and is one of a series presented to Captain Charles Mills, 31st Battalion AIF, by Hauptmann Eckart, Intelligence officer of the 6th Bavarian Division, after the Armistice in 1918. Captain Mills, Company commander of D Company, was wounded and captured during the battle and a fortuitous circumstance saw him meet his former battlefield opponent who gave him the photographs. It’s an absolutely heartbreaking image and reminds me of my Great Grandmother’s brother, Private Josiah Willey, who also died in the Battle of Fromelles. Josiah was last seen hanging, badly wounded, on barbed wire in a creek at Armentieres, up to his waist in water. Josiah would have died around the same time as the soldier in the photograph. Maybe even close by. Josiah was never found to be buried, He left behind a wife and four children. Over 5,500 Australians became casualties in the battle, with around 2,000 killed in action or dying of wounds. It is the worst 24 hour period in Australia’s history and some consider Fromelles the most tragic event in Australia’s history. At the end of the war, over two years later, Charles Bean wandered over the battlefield of Fromelles and observed the grisly aftermath of the battle: We found the old No-Man’s-Land simply full of our dead, he recorded, the skulls and bones and torn uniforms were lying about everywhere. Soon after the war these remains were gathered to construct VC Corner Cemetery, the only solely Australian war cemetery in France. It is also the only cemetery without headstones. There are no epitaphs to individual soldiers, simply a stone wall inscribed with the names of 1,299 Australians who died in battle nearby and who have no known graves. The unidentified remains of 410 are buried in mass graves under two grass plots in the cemetery. Rest In Peace Brave Soldiers. Lest We Forget. Note: The Battle of Fromelles is also known as the Battle of Fleurbaix, Schlacht von Fromelles, and Attack at Fromelles. Information and photograph came from the Australian War Memorial. Image file number AWM A01566.

02.01.2022 RSL NSW to Cancel ANZAC Day services Following updates from the NSW Government, RSL NSW has taken the difficult decision to cancel all public ANZAC Day commemoration services across the state. Acting State President Ray James has advised that the risk to the general public and our sub-Branches is too great. Given the significant concerns around the spread of COVID-19, we simply cannot allow such large gatherings as we see each year on ANZAC Day to go ahead. This is not a dec...ision we have taken lightly. The RSL has a responsibility to act in the best interests of veterans and the general public. While traditional commemorative services will no longer go ahead, ANZAC Day is still a day of recognition and for many Australians, the most important day in our commemorative calendar. ANZAC Day as a marker of our respect and admiration for ANZACs past and present will still be observed said Ray James. Exactly what form this will take will be different from previous years, but as custodians of commemoration, the RSL will still honour the service and sacrifice of our brave servicemen and women. In these challenging times, we will remember them. See more

01.01.2022 Unfortunately due to the late changes on COVID 19 restrictions, we have not had enough time to organise this years Remembrance Day Service. We are also waiting on our flag pole to be repaired after it was broken recently. Our apologies to everyone and look forward to services in 2021. The Warragamba Workers club is having a tribute afternoon on Sunday at the club.
