22.01.2022 "The only thing we learn from history is that we don't learn from history" applies at a few different levels, including to Israel as they seek to re-establish Jerusalem after the exile to Babylon. Zechariah reminds them of the 'temple sermon' of Jeremiah, who had to address the superstitious belief that while the temple was in Jerusalem the city could not be destroyed irrespective of the people of God's disregard of his word. 20.01.2022 Don’t Progress Away From Jesus Because He Is Truth And Love This Sunday 21st June, Ray Patchett will be presenting his Bible Talk on 2 John 1-13. This letter seems to have been written for some or one specific Church within the orbit of John's shepherding. This letter particularly applies the truth, love and obedience tests in regard to managing false teachers and not showing hospitality to them. At that time this is something of the equivalent to sponsoring false teaching ...by formally offering to support their ministry. There are some very important principles here for how believers not just walk themselves but how to determine what ministries to support and how to relate to those who propagate a false Jesus. 19.01.2022 It was back to Ellinbank for us all this week with 830am and 1030am services. It was wonderful to see familiar faces and hear Ray's Bible message in person. 18.01.2022 Zechariah has focused so far on the restoration of the temple and priesthood as the necessary requirements for Yhwh to dwell with his people. Here now in chapter 5 we see, by means of the ongoing use of ‘bizarre’ apocalyptic imagery, that wickedness must be exposed and removed from the holy city. This escalates the contrast in the Bible between the place of idolatry and wickedness with that of holiness and righteousness, Babylon and the new Jerusalem respectively. The concern for God’s people of all eras is working out our allegiance against various obstacles. 18.01.2022 Zechariah 9:1-17 "When Yhwh Returns To His House In Jerusalem" One of many ironies in the Bible is that God’s people are safest when they are weak because their dependence is in their God. Sprinkled throughout Zechariah 9 are various reminders of this as it refers to characters such as Joseph and his rise to power through a series of ‘set backs’ and David who defeated Goliath with a shepherds sling. And yet it is still a surprise to most that when Yhwh comes to his temple in ...glory, as promised in Zechariah, he will come in humility riding on a donkey. How do these ideas function in Zechariah and what do they mean for us? 12.01.2022 Zechariah 6 marks the end of the book’s first section as the prophet receives his eighth vision concerning four horse-drawn chariots which parallels the first vision with its four horses. The judgement that was anticipated in vision one is now made actual as God’s Spirit finds rest in Babylon. Times of peace and rest are the right times for building a temple and we now find more about the temple Yahweh will have built. A man called the ‘Branch’ will accomplish this. The Branc...h is a figure introduced in the writings of earlier prophets such as Isaiah and Jeremiah. Zechariah adds to his portrait: he will be someone who combines the roles of king and priest as he establishes God’s dwelling place among his people.
