25.01.2022 The last paragraph reminds us of the imperative to improve the way we manage the transition of our service personnel from military to civilian life.

23.01.2022 #OTD Private Luke Worsley, KIA Today we pause to remember the life and service of 8265028 Private Luke James Worsley, who was killed in action on the 23rd of... November 2007 whilst fighting in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan. Private Luke Worsley enlisted into the Australian Regular Army on the 23rd of October 2001. After completing his Recruit Training he was allocated to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps and commenced his Initial Employment Training at Singleton, NSW on the 15th of April 2002. At the completion of his Initial Employment Training, Luke was posted to the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment. During his service with 1 RAR, Luke deployed to East Timor as part of OPERATION CITADEL, providing security to the people of East Timor. After two years of service with the 1st Battalion, and looking for more of a challenge, Luke applied for selection with the 4th Battalion, (Commando) The Royal Australian Regiment. He was successful his attempt, and Luke went on to complete the Commando suite of courses, becoming ‘beret’ qualified in 2004. Luke deployed with Delta Commando Company Group to Afghanistan in 2006. Upon return from his rotation, Luke was posted to Bravo Commando Company Group and deployed with them to Afghanistan in September that year. On the 23rd of November 2007, Luke was killed by small arms fire while participating in a planned and deliberate attack by Australian forces against Taliban leaders and their supporters in Oruzgan Province. He was 26 at the time of his death. Lest we forget. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 20.01.2022 TOMORROW, on Malaya and Borneo Veterans Day, Australia recognises our personnel who served in the Malayan Emergency (19481960), and the Indonesian Confrontation, or Konfrontasi, (19621966). Minister for Veterans Affairs Darren Chester said although sensitivities surrounding the conflicts prevented widespread media coverage at the time, our Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel played an important role in bringing these conflicts to an end. The Malayan Emergency was de...clared three years after the end of the Second World War, when the Malayan Communist Party launched an insurgency against British colonial rule, Mr Chester said. Australias commitment began with the Royal Australian Air Force in 1950 and they were joined by the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Army in 1955. On 31 July this year, we marked 60 years since the end of the Malayan Emergency and while the Malayan government declared the Emergency over on 31 July 1960, some Australian units remained in Malaya until 1963. It is important we recognise our defence personnel who served over the 13 years of Australias involvement, in what was one of Australias longest military commitments. The Indonesian Confrontation, a small undeclared war, began in 1962 after Indonesian forces launched attacks on the newly federated state of Malaysia. Australias commitment began in 1964, and in 1965 our troops assisted in small-scale operations in the thickly forested terrain of Borneo, Mr Chester said. Although the situation had stabilised by the end of 1965, events within Indonesia led to an official end to the conflict in the following year when a treaty between Indonesia and Malaysia was signed. Tomorrow, we pay tribute to the 39 Australians who died while serving in the Malayan Emergency, 15 of whom were killed in action. We also pay tribute to over 20 Australians who lost their lives whilst serving in the Indonesian Confrontation. To those veterans of these two conflicts, on behalf of Australia, thank you for your service and sacrifice. The Australian War Memorial will hold a Last Post Ceremony at 4:55pm AEST tomorrow, 31 August 2020, to commemorate Malaya and Borneo Veterans Day, and the service of Private Larry Richard Downes who died serving during the Indonesian Confrontation. Bookings are required and can be made on the Australian War Memorial website to secure your place. 19.01.2022 On this day in 2008, the Battle of Khaz Oruzgan took place. A combined Australian, American, and Afghan patrol was ambushed by Taliban fighters near the villag...e of Ana Kalay, Khaz Oruzgan, Afghanistan. The battle was one of the most intense for Australian forces since the Vietnam war at the time. Outnumbered and surrounded the battle would last over nine hours before the patrol managed to break out from the ambush and return to FOB Anaconda, having expended nearly all ammunition. During this contact, Corporal Mark Donaldson would perform acts of exceptional gallantry in the face of accurate and sustained enemy fire that ultimately saved the life of a coalition force interpreter and ensured the safety of the other members of the combined Afghan, US and Australian force and for this he would later be awarded the Victoria Cross. Australian Explosives Detection Dog (EDD) Sarbi would spend almost 14 months missing in action (MIA) in Afghanistan after disappearing during the Battle of Khaz Oruzgan. She was rediscovered alive in late 2009 by US forces and returned to Australia. From the 37 man patrol there was 1 KIA (US), 11 WIA (9 Aus) & 1 MIA (EDD Sarbi). : Australian War Memorial

16.01.2022 Warragul Sub-Branch is asking the local community to dig deep this Remembrance Day and make a donation to the annual Poppy Appeal. Acting Sub-Branch President Ben Vahland said: Our Poppy Appeal will look a little bit different this year, and you may not see our RSL volunteers on the streets raising money by selling the iconic red poppies as we normally would.... But just because we may not be able to physically fundraise, does not mean that the need to raise funds disappears. We need your help now, more than ever. If you can, a small donation a gift of kindness for a poppy from the Warragul Sub-Branch or you can donate via poppyappeal.com.au to help change a veterans’ life. Every little bit counts. Ben Vahland Acting Sub-Branch President said. The RSL’s Poppy Appeal is an annual fundraising activity that Sub-Branches across the nation take on in the lead up to Remembrance Day each year. Every dollar raised through the Poppy Appeal will go to supporting veterans and their families with a range of RSL health and wellbeing support services, including relief from financial hardship. Donations to the Poppy Appeal can be made by purchasing a commemorative poppy from Coles Warragul or by donating online at poppyappeal.com.au

15.01.2022 The war is over Commemorate the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific from home with RSL Victoria VP day Victory in the Pacific Day also known as VP Day is commemorated across Australia and the world, as the anniversary of the end of World War II. It is a date that well never forget. On 15 August 1945, Japan accepted the Allied Nations terms of surrender and Australias then Prime Minister, Ben Chifley, announced that the war was over. On 15 August 2020, Austra...lia will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. The Second World War came close to home, and the people who served during this conflict defended our country. Many of our men and women who served during WWII are no longer with us. It is for this reason that the anniversary of Victory in the Pacific is so important, as it provides all of us with an opportunity to celebrate those WWII veterans who are still with us, and to commemorate those who are not. The 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific is also an important opportunity to reminisce, start conversations and educate younger members of the community about this significant period in Australias military history. In Victoria, due to COVID-19, we are unable to mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific with traditional commemorations and gatherings this year. However, there are still many ways to connect with and honour our WWII veterans from home.

14.01.2022 The following is a collective Statement by a dozen serving and ex-SASR soldiers which appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald today (Monday, 16 November). It is m...y personal view that everyone who seeks to make commentary on the righteousness or otherwise of the investigation into alleged Special Forces war crimes should read this Statement by members of the SAS family first; and take it to heart, before expressing their own opinion. "We are the soldiers, the ‘Operators’ as we are known, who have served or are continuing to serve in the Special Air Service Regiment. We have decided to speak, as one, to the Australian public, who have trusted us and invested in us to defend our country for over 60 years. All of us have been carefully selected for the privilege of serving our country in the SASR. Our government has invested millions of dollars of public money in each one of us to provide you with unique and specialised capabilities in the defence of our nation. Our regiment is now the subject of the longest inquiry into allegations of war crimes conducted by the Australian Defence Force. Accusations and allegations of war crimes as well as failures of leadership cut to the very core of the SASR. Such actions go against the very purpose of who we are as an organisation, and against the very nature of who we are as individuals. We are not indifferent to human suffering. We do not have a callous disregard for human life. We are, however, selected for our unwavering moral compass, on which we proudly hang our Sandy Berets. We are not out of control. In fact, we have spent the majority of our professional soldiering careers in the SASR drilling and exercising, specifically to avoid casualties among non-combatants. We define SASR mission success by how precisely we can apply the minimum amount of force to achieve a desired strategic outcome with the absolute minimum loss of human life. This is evident in the tens of thousands of missions and programs we have carried out around the world. We are all singularly bound by the principle of "truth in reporting". This principle underpins our single most important regimental capability: long-range surveillance and reconnaissance. Truth in reporting enables the SASR to act as the operational eyes and ears of the Australian Defence Force and the Australian government. Without truth in reporting, we are nothing. As early as 2006, it was our commitment to truth in reporting that instigated what has now resulted in the four-year-long Brereton inquiry into allegations of war crimes in Afghanistan. Truth in reporting is why we speak up then and now. The matters before us are of an extremely grave nature, and we accept that the impact of the Brereton inquiry may adversely affect former and current serving members and their families, as well as our strategic relationships with other coalition forces around the world. Whatever the outcome, we prefer our regimental history to reflect hard truths over comforting fantasy. If it can be destroyed by the truth, it deserves to be destroyed by the truth. We also believe that the same principle of truth in reporting should be embraced by the media, so as not to unduly impugn the reputation of the SASR as a whole, or inadvertently imply improper behaviour committed by former or current serving members. Equally, we applaud accurate portrayals of misconduct provided it is supported by appropriate context and evidence. Just as we embrace truth in reporting, we demand our leadership to do the same. Leaders are bound in their duty to convey what we have seen and reported and we hold them to the same standards to which we hold ourselves. We hold our leadership to the same unforgiving standards to which we hold our teams, and ourselves, individually. It is our relentless pursuit of individual and organisational excellence that defines us as an organisation and a regiment. We lead by example. On combat operations, we were forced to sacrifice many of our technological advantages over highly adaptive adversaries who knew no rules or bounds. We accepted continually shifting goal posts and decisions made by governments in the absence of a defined campaign outcome in Afghanistan. We begrudgingly accepted these strategic decisions while attempting to effectively operate in an environment characterised by uncertainty, danger and our own casualties. We are not war criminals, nor have we ever set our morality aside. We are professional volunteer soldiers who frequently upheld the values of the Australian Army during a 10-year expeditionary campaign in the Middle East, despite the absence of any clear definition of victory. We believe in the same legal principles that underpin the very fabric of Australian society, something that we have sworn to defend with our lives. We support the removal from the regiment and legal prosecution of anyone found guilty of breaching the laws of armed conflict, the Geneva Convention or the rules of engagement. We outright reject and despise criminality in all its forms, especially in the context of soldiering. We support unbiased investigatory due process, the rule of law and the burden of proof. There is absolutely no place in the ADF, least of all in the SASR, for any individual who believes they are untouchable or above the law. Having had full legal representation, should it be proven that any former or current serving individuals within the SASR have acted outside the law or the expected standards and behaviours demanded of an Australian soldier, we underline that we will wholeheartedly support their prosecution and removal from the regiment. They have acted against everything the SASR fights and stands for. They are not one of us. We are committed to accepting the outcomes and consequences of the Brereton inquiry and to action its recommendations. Then we will return to the shadows where we belong. We do not seek to be glorified for our actions or demonstrating our moral courage. We only seek the validation that truth in reporting is who we are and what we do. We are proud of the internal examinations into our regiment that have highlighted a culture of toughness and professionalism of the extraordinary men and women who do extraordinary work under extraordinary circumstances. We are the tactical, operational and strategic eyes and ears for the ADF and the Australian government, with strategic and innovative capabilities to reach out and strike our adversaries when required. We are soldiers, we are professionals, and we are Australians. We are committed to upholding the values of the Australian Defence Force. We believe in truth in reporting, moral courage and constant vigilance from the shadows in defence of Australia. We are the SASR. Who Dares Wins. See more

14.01.2022 Today we commemorate the Battle of Pakchon, Korea. On this day, the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), successfully assaulted and held crucial hil...l features overlooking Pakchon in the face of heavy North Korean and Chinese resistance. In their first battle with the Chinese, 3 RAR captured a well defended hill, with only limited offensive support, and held it in the face of heavy counter-attacks. Following heavy fighting the pressure on the Australians unexpectedly ceased after midnight, and parties of Chinese were observed beginning to withdraw. The battle had claimed 12 Australian lives with a further 70 Australians wounded. We remember these brave Australians who took to the Battlefield of Pakchon, especially those who lost their lives. Their names will liveth for evermore. #remembertoremember Image Courtesy: Australian War Memorial

13.01.2022 Some positive action in building support and improving outcomes for Veterans and their families, well done Minister Chester. Veteran Family Advocate Appointed IN a significant step towards promoting better outcomes for veterans families, Ms Gwen Cherne has been appointed as the first ever Veteran Family Advocate, representing their perspectives in ongoing policy and decision making across Government.... Minister for Veterans Affairs Darren Chester congratulated Ms Cherne on her appointment and said that her passion and experience in supporting the ex-service community would ensure the Government continues to put veterans and their families first. Ms Cherne has an impressive resume in roles relating to defence personnel and veterans families at both a national and international level, but she also brings with her a range of lived experience as a defence spouse, a war widow, and the mother of a current serving Australian Defence Force member, Mr Chester said. By directly engaging with the families of veterans of all generations, Ms Cherne will draw on their advice to help shape the design of programs, policy and services, with a focus on building on our understanding of the factors that can enhance or detract from the mental health of veterans and their families, particularly during transition from service. The establishment of the Veteran Family Advocate will be undertaken through the existing Repatriation Commission structure enshrined in the Veterans Affairs legislation, so it can be established immediately. Ms Cherne said as a single mother with two young children at home, and having lost her husband to suicide, she was acutely aware of some of the challenges that Defence families face. I am proud to be appointed the Veteran Family Advocate and am looking forward to building on the important work that has been done to better support veterans families in the last few years, Ms Cherne said. The department has made some significant and positive changes for veterans and their families, and I am very cognisant of the responsibility I have to ensure that work continues and that the voices of veterans families are heard. Ms Chernes background includes service to the veteran community as a board member on the NSW War Widows Guild, as an Ambassador for the Commando Welfare Trust and working with DVA on issues facing widows and families through her appointment to the Council for Women and Families United by Defence Service. In recent years, she has also served on the Council of the Australian War Memorial and as an ambassador for the 2018 Invictus Games. A merit selection process to appoint the Veteran Family Advocate was undertaken in accordance with the APS Merit and Transparency Policy. Ms Cherne will start in the role on Monday, 24 August 2
