25.01.2022 Planning for eventual face-to-face Scouting I have discovered that Warrandyte local treasure - The Scout River Chapel - is exactly halfway between the Warrandyte Scout Hall and Clifford Park Scout Camp... Many future hiking and camping opportunities! Here's some snaps from yesterday's (5km zone) reconnoitre.

24.01.2022 Shhh - don't tell *everyone*! This is why we do what we do ;)

21.01.2022 Back tonight by popular demand: The International Space Station! November 2020 marks *20 years* of human habitation outside the atmosphere of Earth. Um, wow.... Our astronauts aboard the ISS circumnavigate the globe about every 90 minutes - 16 times a day - at 27,500km/h - 400 km above us... and once again they will be making a spectacular pass over our part of the world. It will be perfect viewing conditions tonight - here's the details so you can set your reminders! Melbourne, Monday 2nd November: 9.30pm-9.34pm. Looking a bit like a bright slow-moving plane, it will 'rise' from the South-West, come almost directly overhead at 83 degrees and set in the East-North-East. That massive solar array will be reflecting the sun back at us at a magnitude of -3.8! That is almost bright enough to see in daytime, so it'll be strikingly bright tonight. You can track the ISS using the Heaven's Above app (or many others). Other stuff: Melbournians will be able to relate to the crew who are living and 'working from home' in their own 2020 Isolation bubble... There are currently 3 crew (Sergey, Kate and Sergey) living in the most restricted Isolation you can imagine. No visiting, very few walks... until their rotation ends in April 2021. The living space is about equivalent to a 6 bedroom house (without the headroom) and holds about as much air as a 747. But the views are *amazing* and they get 16 sunrises and sunsets a day ;) You could set the ISS down on the local oval, and there wouldn't be much room left. And at just over 400 tonnes, it would leave a bit of a dent. Plus, I'm not sure that would please the Warrandyte Football & Cricket Club :D Fun links: https://museumsvictoria.com.au//s/skynotes-november-2020/ https://www.nasa.gov/feature/facts-and-figures Happy viewing!

19.01.2022 As ever Warrandyte 'River' Scouts lived up to their reputation, ignoring chilly water for a favourite activity we run a couple of times a year. The zipline across the river! And once again it was declared, "The best one yet!"

17.01.2022 Horatio, one of our venturers, has interviewed Adie Courtney from the Warrandyte festival committee to find out what is happening next year. See the interview at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytbQAhsHrAk

13.01.2022 Tonight it was raining so of course we did a master-class on 'spark-lit campfire building in wet conditions'. No matches allowed! The Scouts brought their own fire-lighting equipment (ferro rods and steel) and tinder. The easiest fire was started on a ball of Vaselined cotton wool. This was a little too easy, so we also tried our other resources. We had a tinderbox with char cloth and charred punk wood.... The char cloth was as effective as the cotton wool - able to catch the spark and transfer the ember to kindling very quickly. The punk charcoal didn't catch and we suspect it was too fine. We were very impressed with dried bracket fungus which caught the spark very easily and smouldered within for a very long time. Transferring the ember from the fungus proved too difficult in the rainfall. Happy, wet and warm, we celebrated our successes in the downpour with a marshmallow roast over a robust little fire!

11.01.2022 Ordinary at the end of each term we celebrate with a fun outing like laser tag or mini golf - among past activities. This week was actually our 'Term 1' outing, put back 3 times due to lockdowns - so it was much looked forward to! We attempted to lock the Scouts in themed Escape Rooms, but (drat it) they used their ingenuity and team work and eventually escaped...... A fun night with varying difficulty of puzzles, some shocking moments and a lot of excited chatter!

03.01.2022 Corryong were affected by the bushfires so in response they set up a totally new scout group. 50 members already! Warrandyte has provided support by donating quality camping equipment to get them enjoying camping. Who knows? We might get to go camping with them next year.

03.01.2022 The Aussie Backyard Bird Count ends Sunday so there's still lots of chances to get outside, count some birds and appreciate nature in 20 minute grabs... I recommend a cuppa or a milo while you're at it! Ahhhh... https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/
