23.01.2022 Nice night for an upside-down fire! An upside down what!? That's right, get a whole new perspective on life (or at least on lighting the perfect, near-smokeless campfire), by building one of these quick, easy, and delightfully reliable stacks of sticks Its upside down because you lay the biggest fuel - logs, branches, or sticks, depending how long & hot you want the fire to run for - down on the ground; no fire pit, nuthin'. On top of, and perpend...icular to that, arrange the next smallest layer of fuel, and so on, working your way up, getting smaller & more perpendicular with each tier, like a pyramid or something. End up with kindling on top. When ready, say a little something to yourself, friends, the universe, whatever, and light said kindling. Lo & behold, a surprisingly reliable & enjoyable phenomenon will occur.. with a minimum of smoke or fuss, a well mannered fire will steadily, methodically, work its way *down* through the stick-stack But how's that? It's like each subsequent layer burns when it's ready to burn, that is, good & hot from the radiant fire above. Most smoke the lower layers release, tends to get burned aka properly combusted in the column of hot flame above - and it's piping hot because we haven't smothered it with cold fuel that steals heat, weakens the flame & produces lots of smoke Nice huh!? Once it's burned through to the bottom, you're back to regular old campfire - which is still pretty ace. If you wanna go upward from there, check out #rocketstoves #himalayanrocketstoves #upsidedownfire #goodwhileitlasted #campfire #campfires #campfiresarecool

23.01.2022 Another day at the office! Sheep moving every day or two atm, and they’re in the swing of it :) Peak Spring is a joy to behold, especially when it’s such a lush & lovely one as this But more importantly, knowing the grasses are driving our carbon drawdown strategy, giving them the best conditions to do so, and this is how it looks in practice #anotherdayattheoffice #carbondrawdown #soilcarbon #holisticmanagement #freshdigs #sheep #sheeparentsobad #temporaryfencing #spring #plannedgrazing #getamongstit

22.01.2022 Happy Birthday Debbie! Someone who’s done such interesting & inspiring things, deserves a nice floral bouquet & a tasty almond meal cake :) #everyoneneedsadebbie #birthdaysarentsobad #happybirthday #niceflowers #tastycake

22.01.2022 Low intensity, post thinning burn of excess fuel on forest floor, leaving layers of ash, damp mulch, and cool, wet soil below. Sets the stage for grasses & understory trees to come back in to what was an overloaded, monoculture of reveg trees - they did their job very nicely and now provide the structure to support new life coming in. Much better to clean it up now than wait for it to explode on a hellish summer day, and *may* make the difference btwn being able to prevent wildfire, and not..

22.01.2022 Happy Spring Equinox :) #springequinox #equaldayandnight #sayalittlesomething

20.01.2022 Fermentation Friday :) Good old fashioned sourdough & sauerkraut on the farm, and something tropical from @siyao.fuga in Singapore: banana, lemon & lime ferment #fermentationfriday #fermenteverything #trustmeitsgoodforyou

18.01.2022 Un-fencing Friday! Taking down old fences - especially barbed wire - is my happy place. Here the bovine representatives of our flock/flerd are enjoying a kip under trees that were previously fenced either side during establishment, but now we can take one side (the side that will offer most shade or leave the better of two fences) down to get the animals in; more shade, shelter, grass, and fuel reduction #everyoneneedstrees #happyanimals #fuelreduction #animalsloveshadetoo

16.01.2022 Cakeweed, formerly known as Capeweed.. Winter growing annual first on scene to begin repairing over-fertilised, bare soil (over-grazing/over-traffic). Needless to say these animals have a brief graze here before moving on. Other areas of cakeweed intentionally not grazed are grassing up nicely over time - trying a few different things without resorting to herbicide. Aim is longer lived, higher quality grasses with permanent soil cover, and we're getting there :)

16.01.2022 Gotta take a moment when you can.. maybe now's a good time.. #happyplace #chillininthegrass #cantyouseeimsleeping

09.01.2022 Well, good morning, and happy early Spring..

07.01.2022 Wah cool..! "Have you heard people talking about regenerative agriculture, and wondered exactly what it is, and whether it could work on your farm? A series of eight short videos on the key principles of regenerative agriculture have just been released by three local Landcare networks (Bass Coast, South Gippsland and Western Port Catchment) and the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council. ... Hosted by certified professional soil scientist (CPSS) Declan McDonald, the videos explain what regenerative agriculture is and how the principles can be applied on all farm types and landscapes within our region including; beef, dairy, sheep, chickens, horticulture and vineyards. Topics covered include: introducing regenerative agriculture, minimising soil disturbance, maximising crop diversity, keeping soil covered, maintaining living roots systems year round, integrating livestock and trees, and how farmers can transition to regenerative agriculture. The videos can be accessed at https://tinyurl.com/regenagriculture or on the partner websites. "If you’re curious but don’t know where to start, the videos are a great introduction to the key principles of regenerative agriculture, and how they might apply to your farm says Declan. You will see some local examples of how farmers are regenerating their soils for improved plant and animal health and productivity"
