25.01.2022 This Saturday and Sunday the Warren Gun Club is hosting the 24th annual Golden Ibis and Dennis Hunt memorial shoot which this year is in conjunction with the Western Zone carnival. Every year the event draws shooters from across the state, all with hopes of taking out the golden brooch and last year’s winner travelled up from Hay to beat the field of 80 competitors. The club members have been working hard to have the grounds and club house prepared for all of the visitors thi...s weekend and recent rain has got the range looking lush and green. The weekend wouldn’t be possible without the support of the community and our sponsors so I would like to give a big thank you to Splat Plumbing Services, MTH Mobile Welding, Gunpro, the Hunt Family, Warren Services Club, Warren Supa Iga, Macquarie Toyota, Collie Hotel, and The Beauty Room. And as always, the weekend wouldn’t be half the event it is without the huge effort the women in the club put in to ensure that there is a generous supply of tasty food and snacks over the two days. We encourage the community to come out to the club over the weekend to have a look at the sport, enjoy some good food or share a beer and yarn around the bar. We look forward to seeing you next weekend, Rick O’Shay.

23.01.2022 A few photos (January 2020) courtesy of Ben Wild comparing the effects the drought had on our range compared to the grass that we were blessed with for the weekend. It’s amazing the difference that 6 weeks and 10 inches of rain will make.

Our condolences go to his wife June and the family. R.I.P. Kevin

16.01.2022 On Saturday, the Warren Gun Club hosted our annual Christmas shoot with a great crowd of 44 shooters spread over 8 squads showing up to try and win a ham or frozen chook. The organisers of the day had a yarn to the big fella up stairs earlier in the week and he came through with the goods, giving us a day of mild temperatures with a light breeze which made for enjoyable conditions to shoot in. The ladies of the club had spoiled us again as always, putting on a delicious sprea...d for lunch with plenty of sweat treats and fresh fruit being offered throughout the afternoon. The first event for the day was 25 target point score shot off 16 metres with John Noonan, Dean Murray, Will Abbott (Coonamble) and Peter Hosie (Cobar) winning the ham for their respective grades while second and third place getters picked up a frozen chook or two. Novelty events provided plenty of fun for the day and the variety in the program would be sure to test the shooters ability, especially event two which was a 25 target walk back with 5 targets from 17m, 5 from 19m, 5 from 21, 5 from 23 and then a final 5 from the 25m marker. Michael Hill, Brent Barwick, Denis Coaker (Dubbo) and Baden Powell (Hermidale) proving to be the best of their grades again picking up a ham and the other place getters received a few chooks. The third event for the day was 25 target crazy points where 3 points were awarded for hitting the target with the first barrel, 2 for the second shot and if the shooter happened to be skilled (or lucky) enough to hit a chip they picked up 5 points. There was plenty of banging and ammo wasting going on with hams awarded to Michael Hill, Greg Smith (Coonamble), David Obrien and Charlie Banks. Event four was a pairs event for Deauville 30 single targets where Brent Barwick teamed up with Tricky Trindle (Coonamble) who split the first prize with the pairing of David Obrien and Tony Connolly. High guns for the day picked up by Charlie Banks-Junior, Button Powell (Hermidale)-veteran, John Noonan-C grade, Callum Hosking (Goolma)-B grade, David Obrien-A grade, Doug Ferguson-AA grade and Kevin Hatch (Cobar) was the overall winner for the day. Thank you to all those who attended the day and an even bigger thank you to the members of the club who have volunteered throughout the year, we look forward to seeing you all back in the new year.

12.01.2022 On Saturday the Warren Gun Club hosted our monthly shoot with shooters travelling from Narromine and Cobar to compete. The day began with the AGM with Trevor Banks and Doug Ferguson returning to their roles on the executive and I would like to thank both of these gentlemen for their tireless work in keeping the club operating and a big thankyou to the other club members who have put their hand up to help run the club for the next 12 months. Throughout the afternoon we were tr...eated with a delicious lunch and a variety of treats prepared by the ladies of the club. The first event for the day was 30 target ball trap, than 25 target double barrel followed by 25 target point score. The championship event for the day was 30 target handicap and it was great to see two up and coming shooters battle it out in a shoot off. Michael Hill who is relatively new to the sport was carrying on from his recent form at the state carnival in Wagga over the long weekend where he successfully took out the C-grade high gun went head to head with young Charlie Banks who has earnt himself a handicap from the A-grade marker. Charlie came out victorious and I would to congratulate him on winning his first sash, a very well-deserved token and I am sure that it will be the first of many. The main event for the day was the annual final of the Tom Wild memorial handicap shield. Trevor Banks and Sid Kinsey had qualified for the final throughout the year and a clean score from Brent Barwick on Saturday made for three competitors in the event. The weather had deteriorated quickly prior to the event with wind and a small amount of rain making for challenging shooting, only four targets were required for Trevor Banks to come out on top and with that earnt himself a handsome cash prize, sash and his name engraved on a very impressive piece of silverware. At the completion of the day Don Williamson gathered everyone together to say a few words about ex-club president Kevin Walton after his recent passing and then everyone shared a beer in his memory. The club would like to pass on our condolences to the Walton family. Until next month, Rick O’Shay.

03.01.2022 On Saturday the Warren Gun Club hosted the 23rd annual Ernie Wills memorial shoot. Due to a strange combination of weather events, the drought and rain had numbers down slightly on previous years but visiting shooters from Tottenham, Narromine, Dubbo, Goolma and Sydney made up the numbers for five squads. The very welcome rain held off for the majority of the afternoon but the committed shooters pushed through the wet and windy conditions. The first event of the afternoon was... 20 target single barrel with Trevor Banks shooting a clean score to take out AA-grade, Mal Stephens won A-Grade and Brent Barwick winning B-grade, there wasn’t any C-grade shooters present on the day. Next up was 20 target point score with Trevor Banks and Mal Stephens again winning their grades and Mark Liersch won B-grade. Event 3 was 30 target double barrel which saw the first-place prize money being split in each grade. Charlie Banks, Jason Stone and Kyle Walton were the best of AA-grade, Mal Stephens and Don Williamson won A-grade and Michael Shields and Sid Kinsey won B-Grade. The final event for the day was 25 target handicap where Charlie Banks, Scott Walton and Brent Barwick split the second prize meanwhile Mark Liersch shoot a clean score to take the event out and also qualify himself for the Tom Wild handicap final later in the year. Grade high guns for the day went to Brent Barwick, Mal Stephens and Charlie Banks. The overall high gun winner was Mark Leirsch from Dubbo gun club and was presented his prize money, sash and trophy by Kelly Wills. Mark was very grateful for the award and also commended the club on always running a great shoot as well as travelling having a number of members that regularly travel and support other clubs. He also praised the ladies in the kitchen, saying its great to go to a shoot where the food is cooked by women in olive oil rather than eating food that is cooked by men and looks like it was fried in either gun oil or sump oil. A huge thank you needs to go to the Wills family for continuing to support the day with prize money and the always fantastic food throughout the day. I would also like to thank the ladies who assisted Kelly Wills with the meals and snacks, the committee for running another successful shoot and young Will Anderson for working tirelessly all afternoon to ensure the traps were always full of targets. Next month is our open two-day event which also coincides with the western zone carnival so its expected the prize money will draw a large crowd for the weekend. Until next month, Rick O’shay.
02.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon we hosted our monthly club shoot with 18 shooters forming three squads which was a better than expected number of competitors due to being in the peak of harvest for the district.
