06.01.2022 It's the start of another week and a return to an inclement Sydney for #MusicianMonday! This week we are excited to feature our own 'brasso profondo' Petty Offi...cer Musician Dan McMahon!! My name is Dan McMahon and I am currently posted to the Royal Australian Navy Band Sydney. I have served 14 years with both RAN Band Sydney and RAN Band Melbourne, performing regularly in the wind band, big band and military band on my primary instrument, the bass trombone. I am from Richmond NSW, and began learning tenor trombone during my second year of high school, gaining experience through community bands and pit orchestras in the Sydney area. Moving to bass trombone early on, I also played euphonium and tuba during time in brass bands. These groups included the Hawkesbury District Concert Band, Blacktown City Band, Warringah Brass and Gunnedah Brass Band, (now Sydney City Brass). My first experience of the Navy Band was seeing and hearing the band marching down the street during the Anzac Day parade in Sydney as a teenager, the effect of which was enough to spark an interest in military music! I also came into contact with military bands through my trombone teacher, then a member of the Air Force Band. I completed a Bachelor of Music in 2005 at Western Sydney University before joining the Navy Band in 2006. However his first job was as an automotive technician with the Ford Motor Company, completing a trade qualification in 2001. I have found the experience of being a full-time military musician very challenging and very rewarding. The demands of a high turnover of music and constant performances, often in very different ensembles and styles, has meant that it is an extremely valuable experience as a musician. I feel my sight-reading skills and exposure to many varied musical experiences have refined my approach to the trombone and my overall musical knowledge has improved as a result. Another element of my Navy Band experience is as a lighting operator during international deployments with ADF Forces Entertainment, seeing us involved with Australian Defence Force in the Middle East and other operations. These tours provide morale support to our deployed troops overseas and I have visited Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Qatar, the Solomon Islands and East Timor with other technical crew from the Navy Band. I deployed to sea with FFG-03 HMAS Sydney - IV on Operation Northern Trident in 2009, and marched in the ADF Military Band for the The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo when it visited Melbourne in 2016. Another enormous highlight was performing in Villers-Bretonneux and Bullecourt, France for the ANZAC Dawn Service in 2015. As a Leading Seaman, I've undertaken the administrative roles of Band Librarian, IC Stores and IC Transport. However after a promotion to Petty Officer this year, I have a focus on divisional support and a managerial roles within the Band. #ServinginHarmony #NavyBand #AusNavy #ProudtoServe #OurPeople #MilitaryBand #MilitaryMusic #BrassSection #Trombone #BassTrombone
