19.01.2022 FANTASTIC FOOD DRIVE FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON !! Calico bags will be delivered to the doorsteps of 1500 homes across north Warrnambool on Sunday as the city's Christmas food drive gets under way. Paul Pallot, who took on the role as pastor at the Warrnambool and District Baptist Church earlier this year, said the food drive was something that his Melbourne church had been involved in and he was keen to bring the idea here... Four other churches - St John's Presbyterian, St Joseph's Catholic Church, Naringal Baptist Church, Gateway Church of Christ - along with Homeseeker real estate and King's College will be helping out with the food drive. The bags will be delivered to homes between Wangoom and Whites roads and, on Sunday, November 15, the sames teams would return to collect the bags in the hope that they might be filled with some non-perishable food items. "If they're not there we may doorknock a little bit, ask people if they've got something to contribute," Mr Pallot said. "All the food goes directly to Warrnambool and District Foodshare just to help stock them up for the lead into Christmas. "It's a pretty simple concept. It's about collecting food and making it easier for people to give without having to leave their home." Mr Pallot said that if the food drive proved successful, they would look at expanding it over the next few years. The idea came about during the first lockdown when they were looking to see how they could help meet the biggest need in the community. "If Foodshare could be well supplied and stocked up, they could provide for a lot of people's needs," he said.
17.01.2022 FoodShare is preparing for an influx before Christmas SOUTH-WEST charities say vulnerable people will need more support when the JobSeeker payment drops in the new year. The federal government will extend the JobSeeker coronavirus payments, at a reduced rate, until March.... The existing $250 fortnightly supplement is due to expire on December 31. The payment will then be reduced to $150 per fortnight and extended until March 28. Single people on JobSeeker will receive $357 a week under the lesser rate. Community development coordinator for Anglicare Victoria South West Louise Serra said it was a disappointing decision that had the potential to force people into poverty. She said between the cost of rent, utilities and food it was an impossible equation to make ends meet for some people. "This is why our emergency relief is there," she said. Warrnambool and District FoodShare executive officer Dedy Friebe said the organisation had always anticipated that government support payments would decrease. PREPARED: Warrnambool and District FoodShare executive officer Dedy Friebe says Christmas will be a challenging time for some people in the community. "This is the uncertainty of the pandemic that we've talked about," he said. "In the last few weeks we have noticed an increase in demand. "I think the highway to Christmas is going to be very hard for a lot of people and we're going to be very busy." He said FoodShare had purchased more staple food to be prepared for the increased demand. Long serving Warrnambool St Vincent de Paul volunteer Jack Daffy echoed Mr Friebe and said the charity was expecting to see an increase in people needing support in the coming months. "I think for people that are only just getting by Christmas will be very hard," he said. Recently released data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed the unemployment rate jumped from 1.2 per cent in August to 5.1 per cent in September for Warrnambool and the south-west. For support people can phone the Anglicare Emergency Relief Hotline on 0437 531 997.
