03.01.2022 I have spent the vast majority of my life studying, practicing and teaching a variety of martial arts disciplines. When I started in 1988 the martial arts landscape looked very different from today. Knowledge wasn’t at your fingertips but sought by personal experience and if you were lucky by meeting the right people at the right time. Fortunately for me when I was searching for a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu coach one walked through my door over 15 years ago. Before I had met Bill Gr...ay I knew a little BJJ (well I thought I did) and thought that I should be ok when we rolled. BING you guessed it I got owned and mauled by a gentle and technical animal. So began my official journey into BJJ. I have grappled with enough people over the past 15 plus years to know that I'm not and will never be the best. I'm not that guy who can submit everyone at will. I'm not that guy with the un-passable, upside down, inside out guard that no-one can navigate their way through and I'm not that guy who has an encyclopaedic knowledge of everything BJJ. Like everything else I do in the martial arts realm I simply apply consistency to daily practice and train and teach in a fashion that ensures the best possible result for the long term. And what's the best possible result? For me it's not medals, it’s not kicking arse and it's not even belts - it's connecting with people, learning something interesting and keeping fit. Am I proud to be the first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt in my region? FU#% YEAH. But I would be just as happy as a white belt working with my coaches, students and friends. A black belt in BJJ is a big achievement in the martial arts world but it does not make you invincible to your training partners catching you and certainly not to life. For that I am eternally humble and know my place. Thank you to my number one BJJ coach Bill Gray for his guidance, knowledge and patience and to the many others I have learnt from - If you have rolled with me you have taught me. And thank you to my students both past and present who keep me on my toes, push me to be a better martial arts practitioner and teacher and for supporting my martial arts journey. Much love xo :) See more
