Emmy Silvius from Winslow penned this thoughtful poem yesterday about missing hugs in the hope it would bring some comfort to others. "Be well and stay safe," she says. 17.01.2022 If anyone deserves thanking for the remarkable job they do, it’s the 70 staff in our regionwide environmental services team. It’s THANK YOUR CLEANER DAY and tha...t’s exactly what we plan to do. To all of our environmental services colleagues, thank you for providing all of us staff, patients, consumers, residents, clients, visitors and volunteers with exceptionally clean and safe environments. Thank you for the work you do that continues to exceed the hospital cleaning guidelines of the Department of Health and Human Services. And thank you for always doing all of this with a smile. Nothing is too big or too small. ‘Our cleaning staff are renowned for their high quality work and for ensuring we maintain an infection-free environment,’ explains service development executive director Jamie Brennan. ‘Over the past 12 months our environmental services team has averaged an exceptional 95/100 score for all monthly internal cleaning audits. In the last three months, that score’s been even higher: 98/100. This makes South West Healthcare one of the most-consistently cleanest health services in Victoria.’ And how remarkable these results are, when you consider the pandemic challenges of the past eight months. These workers have been on the COVID front line, cleaning the rooms of COVID-positive patients and undertaking additional precautionary cleaning to keep everyone safe. As environmental services coordinator Jamie Sabo rightly says: ‘The fact that we’ve had zero hospital-acquired transmissions of COVID-19 within our hospitals and other facilities to date is a testament to the great work the environmental services team has been putting in, day and night, for the duration of the pandemic.’ PHOTO > Some of the terrific people in our Warrnambool campus environmental services team: (back row from left) Chris Gurney, Liz Conn, Jenny Cameron, Shirley White, Frank Moloney, (middle row) Terri Dodoro, Jo Rundell, Judy Foley, Judy Gapes, (front row) Bronwyn Vanderstarre, Jamie Sabo and Sally Edwards.

15.01.2022 2020 GREAT VIC BIKE RIDE CANCELLED Its not really a surprise, but Bicycle Network have confirmed this years Great Victorian Bike Ride wont be going ahead. Sp...eaking in a video announcement, General Manager of Events and Operations for Bicycle Network Rebecca Lane said we know its the right decision given the current situation but after 36 consecutive Great Vics its still a tough call for us to put out there. When we come together every November were more than a bike ride, were a community. We spend ten days together living and riding and experiencing the very best of regional Victoria, and no matter how the week unfolds we know were there as one. Ms Lane made note of the many people wholl be affected by the decision to cancel this years event, including volunteers, the Bicycle Network team, contractors, the riders, and of course the local communities that receive a significant economic injection as the ride passes through. This year the ride was due to start in Rainbow, with stops in Brim, Horsham, Halls Gap, Pomonal, and Dunkeld, before finishing in Great Western. Bicycle Network are planning to follow the same route in 2021.

11.01.2022 I did not know that! Since her death in 1979, the woman who discovered what the universe is made of has not so much as received a memorial plaque. Her newspap...er obituaries do not mention her greatest discovery. [] Every high school student knows that Isaac Newton discovered gravity, that Charles Darwin discovered evolution, and that Albert Einstein discovered the relativity of time. But when it comes to the composition of our universe, the textbooks simply say that the most abundant atom in the universe is hydrogen. And no one ever wonders how we know. Jeremy Knowles, discussing the complete lack of recognition Cecilia Payne gets, even today, for her revolutionary discovery. (via alliterate) OH WAIT LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT CECILIA PAYNE. Cecilia Payne’s mother refused to spend money on her college education, so she won a scholarship to Cambridge. Cecilia Payne completed her studies, but Cambridge wouldn’t give her a degree because she was a woman, so she said to heck with that and moved to the United States to work at Harvard. Cecilia Payne was the first person ever to earn a Ph.D. in astronomy from Radcliffe College, with what Otto Strauve called the most brilliant Ph.D. thesis ever written in astronomy. Not only did Cecilia Payne discover what the universe is made of, she also discovered what the sun is made of (Henry Norris Russell, a fellow astronomer, is usually given credit for discovering that the sun’s composition is different from the Earth’s, but he came to his conclusions four years later than Payneafter telling her not to publish). Cecilia Payne is the reason we know basically anything about variable stars (stars whose brightness as seen from earth fluctuates). Literally every other study on variable stars is based on her work. Cecilia Payne was the first woman to be promoted to full professor from within Harvard, and is often credited with breaking the glass ceiling for women in the Harvard science department and in astronomy, as well as inspiring entire generations of women to take up science. Cecilia Payne is awesome and everyone should know her.

11.01.2022 COVID-19 INSPIRED VANDALISM Safe to say this isnt the usual type of vandalism you see about town...? This overpass in Allansford, south-west Victoria, caus...ed local resident Kerry Beaton to giggle whilst she was walking with her husband. 06.01.2022 WELCOME TO WARRNAMBOOL - 1947 STYLE! Theres nothing like a grand archway to say welcome as you drive into a town, but what do you make of these arches which ...greeted people driving into Warrnambool in 1947? The arches were erected at the entrances to the city during Warrnambools centenary celebrations, and were located nearest the local industry they represented. The four were the Kraft arch on Raglan Parade East, the Nestle arch on Raglan Parade West, the Antarctic Ice arch (which was supposed to look like milk bottles or milk cans) on Mortlake Rd, and the Woollen Mill arch on Timor St. If we were to repeat the exercise today, what industries would be represented and where should the arches be?!
