23.01.2022 SNAKE SEASON HAS BEGUN We would like to introduce you to Rags! Rags is a beautiful girl who got into a wrestle with snake! Rags was brought in on the weekend when her mum found her paralysed on the front patio, unable to get up or move. Her temperature was so low that even after 2 hours of active warming, it still wouldn’t read on the thermometer! Fortunately, after receiving emergency care and a few days in hospital, we were able to send Rags home with her mum! ... This post is a good news post, but also a reminder to everyone that snakes are out and about. WHAT TO LOOK FOR? Dogs and cats can present very differently! Cats have some resistance to snake venom, and sometimes will not develop clinical signs for 24hrs after the snake bite! Common clinical signs include: paralysis, difficulty walking and falling over, dilated pupils, and dullness. Dogs tend to present much more quickly, they can have acute onset vomiting and diarrhoea, staggering/weakness, collapse and seizures. Sometimes they will have an episode of vomiting/diarrhoea/collapse, and then go back to normal before going downhill again an hour or so later. Whilst these are the common signs to look for, not all cats and dogs read and follow the textbooks, and sometimes they can present differently, and it can take additional tests to figure out the subtle clues! If you think your animal is experiencing any of these clinical signs, please don’t hesitate to give us a call!

21.01.2022 Anyone else get those puppy dog eyes when it comes to food scraps? They’re impossible to resist aren’t they! Just a small reminder that while our pets love leftovers, leftovers don’t always love them! Leftover Christmas meats (especially ham) can be very high in salt and fat - both of which can lead to unhappy bellies and gastrointestinal signs of vomiting and diarrhoea, sometimes even pancreatitis! ... Other delicious Christmas foods like rum balls, christmas pudding, and fruit mince pies contain sultanas which can lead to kidney failure. Please remember that there are plenty of pet-friendly Christmas treats available for your animals, and if in doubt, always research the foods before giving into those puppy eyes!

20.01.2022 Do fireworks make your pup nervous? New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration, but sometimes it can be a scary night for our fur babies! Some animals show mild signs of stress and anxiety, such as lip licking and being unsettled. Others shake uncontrollably, spend the entire night hiding and some even destroy furniture in the house. These behaviours are distressing for both your animal and your family. If your pet struggles with fireworks, please don’t hesitate to book a consult with us before New Years, so that we can work with you to develop a plan to help you and your loved one cope during the celebrations.

17.01.2022 Did you know that fledgling magpies are still learning to fly? They are often seen on the ground at this time of year and mistaken as injured. It is really important they stay near their nest so please leave them in a safe place unless obviously injured. Their parents will be nearby watching out for them :) https://www.wildlifevictoria.org.au//Poster_-_Fledgling_Bi

17.01.2022 THERES SOMETHING FISHY ABOUT JEFF Meet Jeff! When Jeff was purchased he was only 2cm long and cost just $1. He’s not your average patient, but that doesn’t make him any less loved or important! We were thrilled to be able to help him! Jeff’s dad was worried about a mass that had been growing on his eye which was getting quite big. We decided that the mass that was attached to his eye needed to be removed, but this could only be achieved by removing the entire eye also! ... Dr. Linda and nurse Meg anaesthetised Jeff in one tank, and when he was asleep moved him to the surgery table where his eye was quickly removed. Meg continued to flush water over his gills during the procedure, he received pain-relief and was then placed in a recovery tank until he woke up from the anaesthetic. Jeff has recovered well from his big surgery and is back in his tank with all his fishy friends, who hopefully won’t mind that he’s blind in one eye!
