23.01.2022 Just a reminder in the run up to the Council elections on 22 October. This is a non-political platform for sharing information on whales. Any comments not related to whales will be deleted.

21.01.2022 Its been a dramatic couple of weeks for whale watching along the coast. Big Coaming and her calf have been delighting onlookers at Logans Beach and a new cow-c...alf pair have been spotted at Port Fairy and Portland. Sadly this week, for the first time on record, we have recorded the loss of a calf from our waters. Tripod, who calved in June and disappeared for 35 days, returned over the weekend without her calf. Unfortunately, the calf could not have survived as calves are completely dependent on their mothers in their first year of life. Below is a summary of confirmed sightings received by DELWP from 28 July to 8 August: 28 July Queenscliff 1 x Southern Right Whale 29 July Logans Beach 2 x Southern Right Whales (cow (Big Coaming)-calf pair) 30 July Portland 2 x Southern Right Whales 30 July Logans Beach 2 x Southern Right Whales (cow (Big Coaming)-calf pair) 30 July Lorne 4 x Southern Right Whales 30 July Marengo 1 x Southern Right Whale 31 July Logans Beach 2 x Southern Right Whales (cow (Big Coaming)-calf pair) 31 July Logans Beach 1 x Southern Right Whale 31 July Portland 2 x Southern Right Whales 1 August Logans Beach 2 x Southern Right Whales (cow (Big Coaming)-calf pair) 1 August Logans Beach 3 x Humpback Whales 1 August Portland 1 x Southern Right Whale 2 August Logans Beach 2 x Southern Right Whales (cow (Big Coaming)-calf pair) 2 August Logans Beach 1 x Southern Right Whale 3 August Port Fairy 2 x Southern Right Whales (cow-calf pair) 3 August Logans Beach 1 x Southern Right Whale (Tripod) 3 August Portland 2 x Southern Right Whales 4 August Portland 2 x Southern Right Whales (cow-calf pair) 4 August Logans Beach 2 x Southern Right Whales (Tripod plus single adult) 5 August Warrnambool 1 x Humpback Whale 5 August Logans Beach 3 x Southern Right Whales (cow (Big Coaming)-calf pair and Tripod) 6 August Portland 2 x Southern Right Whales (cow-calf pair) 6 August Logans Beach 3 x Southern Right Whales (cow (Big Coaming)-calf pair and Tripod) 7 August Portland 2 x Humpback Whales 7 August Point Richie 2 x Southern Right Whales (cow (Big Coaming)-calf pair) 7 August Logans Beach 1 x Southern Right Whale (Tripod) We always welcome sighting reports! 11.01.2022 It's all over for another year! After a whale season that's seen record numbers of whales off our coast, the majestic Southern Right Whales have left local sho...relines. It's been a bumper baby season, with a record seven Southern Right Whale calves born at Warrnambool's Logans Beach. It's also been a strong season for Humpback Whales, with large numbers seen moving through waters on their northward and southward migrations. From late May until September, there were whale sightings almost every day at Logans Beach - with as many as 25 seen in one day! A big thanks to all the photographers and regular whale-watchers who reported sightings to DELWP, assisting with long-term monitoring of whales. Southern Right Whales are critically endangered on the Victorian Threatened Species Advisory List. This image was taken by a research drone, using a Wildlife Permit.
