15.01.2022 The new Bugiga Hikers camp on Grampians Peaks Trail is a real asset for the Grampians. Architect designed by Sean Godell it reflects the rich Koorie heritage of the area in a most interesting way. Visiting was easy just a 15- 20 minute walk from Rosea Parking Lot. Cross the road from the carpark and a well marked shady trail leads you in. I cannot wait to camp there, online bookings only. The shelter is simple and spacious with strong reference to the traditional mia mia hut in modern materials . Circular numbered campsites (20+) seem to float above the ground, some look out to Mt Rosea cliffs and others to Mt William. Each campsite has large sandstone steps and its own special place. The perfect place to camp or picnic and absorb the spirit and lives gone before.

14.01.2022 Must try this with Charolais cattle down the road.

13.01.2022 Exciting two days this week, Josh Griffiths visited again from Cesar on his annual platypus survey of the upper McKenzie River. Josh is a senior ecologist in Biodiversity Conservation. On the first night he trapped two animals. One was a young female caught last year who had developed further, (DNA testing is helping identify animals). The second platypus caught was new to the survey a young male. Regrowth along the McKenzie hindered trapping this year and no further platypu...s were caught. Good news that habitat is regenerating and that the platypus population though endangered is growing slowly. Catchment Management Authority are keeping a good flow along the river to assist. You can see in the photo how complex the trap has to be. It is regularly checked during the night so Josh had disturbed sleep. Thanks Josh for the excellent photos. See more

13.01.2022 They released 14 wolves into a park. What happened next is a miracle that proves we must take care of our amazing planet.

13.01.2022 Amazing shot of what a Wedgetail eagle can seize! This photo from W Australia shows the fox still alive, it was taken by a local farmer. Wedge tailed eagles are often seen here in Wartook. Once an eagle hovered low on a windy day over our small Jack Russell terrier Smudge who seemed unaware of its presence. Normally Smudge was very alert. I yelled to her and started running over towards her. The eagle retreated a bit, but later in the day followed Smudge and I for over 4km on our daily run. I kept her on a lead and close by.

11.01.2022 Platypus Researcher Josh Griffiths was able to save a female platypus caught around her head and arm by one hair tie. Without this intervention the platypus may have died. Well done Josh and helper.

10.01.2022 Running two days ago, just after rain. Spotted what looked like a strange new fungi? Closer inspection saw a hole in the ground with emerged fungi like chrysalis. The moth inside was gone. Later that night a gentle giant ghost moth rested on our curtains. They sometimes flutter against the window at night during rain. Hatched moths mate, and females scatter up to 10.00 eggs. Having no mouth parts the moths die in a week, often as food for owls. Larvae dig in tree litter and eat tree roots. How do they know it is going to rain? I read they spend 18 months in the ground before they emerge for their nuptial flight.

09.01.2022 Walked up Mt Zero, the Grampians most northerly peak. It gazes north across a former ancient inland sea. To the south you can see Flat Rock with Taipan Wall peaking over it and Mt Staplyton rearing high. Hollow Mountain can be seen with its bouldering cave, and the complexity of the rocks and ridges. I had forgotten the small gorge on Mt Zero that makes the climb more exciting. In a wet spring the orchids are exceptional but now the country is waiting for rain. Children love this peak. Hike was about 25 minutes up, a long stop at the top and down to a birthday feast.

06.01.2022 Platypus in MacKenzie River at Wartook move in the same way up near the falls.

05.01.2022 I enjoy thinking our numerous owls act like this. We suspect some larger owls have taken ducks at night from our locked yard, eg Powerful owls and Barn owls.

05.01.2022 Twenty four hours in the life of a corpse flower.

04.01.2022 Red browed finches thrive here also. They are breeding in our wisteria and Acacia Paradoxa.
