18.01.2022 All hands on deck here at Warwick Art Gallery this week. We are installing the Warwick Artist Group Inc. exhibition "Interconnection" which had to be rescheduled for the original dates in May. The Warwick Artists Group has promoted and supported the visual arts community in the Southern Downs since 1962. Over that time, it has provided the opportunity for members and non-members to extend their practice through learning programs that seek to engage and enlighten participants.... "Interconnection" is a special exhibition for the Group and for the Gallery as it has been designed to acknowledge the Gallerys 30th year. Thirty artists are involved and they have also coordinated a collaborative artwork to celebrate the milestone. The exhibition will be open for visitors tomorrow (Thursday 3 September) and the official opening in Friday 4 September (you must book a ticket online to attend). Image: Granite Beauty Judy Curry
17.01.2022 INTERCONNECTION // Warwick Artist Group have used the Foyer Gallery wall to install a collaborative artwork that allowed for individuals to contribute, but at the same time forms its own narrative. The structure consists of several interconnected boxes of varying sizes. Each contains an individual work that tells its own story. Contributors used mixed media, incorporating their own painted, printed, or three-dimensional work, and included collage, ephemera and found objec...ts. These became assemblages, or dioramas within the box frame. Broadly the works all convey the connections between our Gallery, the community. our towns and the value of the visual arts to us all. In the spirit of community inclusion, the structure also includes several empty boxes. The Artist Group invite the wider community to interact with the sculpture, thereby enhancing the theme of interconnection and collaboration. If you wish to be part of the story, you are invited to make your own contribution. There are only two rules: Keep your work confined to the interior of the box, please do not add to the outside or let anything protrude. The structure has been designed to fit together like a jigsaw Try to keep your work as lightweight as you can. Each of the boxes also has a number, and if you are keen for a mind bending challenge, you can try to work out which box goes with which description on a take-away sheet available at Reception. #warwickqld #creativesoutherndowns #warwickartgallery #TogetherInArt #regionalart #regionalgallery #regionalarts #createaustraliasfuture See more
16.01.2022 Warwick Artist Group have been working towards this exhibition since November 2019. The 30 artists have selected works that represent their latest practice. Gallery Director Karina Devine has met with each artist in the leadup to the exhibition and has enjoyed getting to know each local artist more. The Official opening is a COVID safe requiring pre-booking of the free tickets. The exhibition is also coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the grand opening of Warwick Art Gal...lery in 1990. To commemorate the occasion the Artist Group has created an installation of several interconnected boxes of varying sizes. Each contains an individual work that tells its own story. Contributors used mixed media, incorporating their own painted, printed, or three-dimensional work, and included collage, ephemera and found objects. These became assemblages, or dioramas within the box frame. The Warwick Artists Group acknowledge the help of community and would like to thank: The Warwick Art Gallery for their support, and The Warwick Mens Shed for their expertise in construction of the boxes Highways and Byways: (A Community of Service in the Spirit of the Missionary Sisters of Service and Fr John Wallis) for their contribution towards the funding of the materials used in the installation. Image: Subjective Perspective by Madison Rowan (Year 12) "Todays generation has a tendency where they unintentionally attempt to dodge ugly truths while subconsciously seeking out something that helps distract them from this truth. This was demonstrated to me through an experience at Glengallan homestead where my peers saw and acknowledged the history within the cracks and holes in the walls, yet they concentrated on the beautiful, renovated areas. I attempted to capture this in a much larger scale, bringing in modern, societal problems, reflecting this in my artwork, Subjective Perspective.
15.01.2022 WATERCOLOUR MAGIC // Our current exhibition in the Orange Wall Gallery is by popular Warwick artist Jayde Clacy. 11.01.2022 NEW ARTWORK IN TOWN // Southern Downs Regional Council commissioned Queensland artist Gus Eagleton to create an artwork as part of their revitalisation of the CBD. With storm clouds brewing this afternoon and a more positive outlook than we have had in the region for a long time we would like to share Gus's story about his artwork "Evening Rain". "One of my favourite times of the year in Queensland is October through February where evening storms become more frequent. Apart f...rom the occasional damage that can occur, what I like most is the evening rain that sweeps through cooling down the scorching summer heat. While I was painting in Warwick, extensive cloud coverage consistently passed overhead, but never released a drop of rain. ... 'Evening Rain' captures that moment when the rain starts to fall, and you can feel the change in temperature and smell the water hitting the hot concrete. It's a scene that denies any chance of disaster or change; a scene where everything works out just fine as the rains roll through like they always have." "Evening Rain" is painted on the back of Warwick Twin Cinema which is located on Grafton Street, Warwick

05.01.2022 LAST DAYS // Julie Purcell's exhibition Beebo Blues concludes this coming Saturday. Something you may not have noticed about Julie's work are her frames. These are made from hardwood stakes found on the family property. To create extra width and length the stakes have been cleverly joined using the pointed end in a simplified version of a dovetail join. You can see this ingenuity in many of the choices Julie has made about these works. Our image shows a detail of the piece "Mad Max Dollhouse" with the handmade frame. This work was also created on salvaged doors from the kitchen featured in the painting. Image: Mad Max Dollhouse (detail) Julie Purcell Oil on Salvaged Board.

04.01.2022 CELEBRATING OUR 30TH // The Warwick Art Gallery turns thirty this year. Instead of holding an event we are going to share thirty stories, one for each year, that represent the prominent and significant input our exhibitions and projects have made to the community of Warwick. Story 30 (and sadly our last there are so many more we could share) In 2016 Warwick Art Gallery curated an exhibition called Weather Exposure. Four exceptionally talented local photographers were in...vited to showcase their stunning weather images. Four popular local photographers participated in the exhibition; Stephen Reid, Chris McFerran, Caralee Mirfin and Terry West. The Southern Downs landscape is renowned for its beauty, wide open spaces and distinctive seasons. Most of images in the exhibition were of the local area and featured magnificent captures of storm clouds, rainbows, frost and sunshine. We hope you enjoyed these stories. 03.01.2022 LAST DAY TODAY // Craftivism. Dissident Objects and Subversive Forms. closes today at 4pm. Broadening our understanding of craft-making traditions, the artists in this exhibition subvert and extend these forms into the realm of activism and social change, reflecting on the world in which we live. While some respond directly to artistic or political movements, others encourage social connection between community members or require participatory activation through collectiv...e processes. Drawing on a long historical lineage, Craftivism. Dissident Objects and Subversive Forms enables viewers to rethink craft in a new light.
