23.01.2022 Boyd Q & A Day 3 - when we recorded the answers we voice recorded them interview style and with some of Team XL present. It made for a fun evening and we hope t...o get some of the humour across in the answers. Q: Dear Boyd, what do you actually feel just right before entering the arena for the dressage test? What are you particularly proud of in your life with horses? A: This was a fun one as Preetha, Boyds wife and Emma, Boyds groom were present when we recorded his answer so you are getting 3 answers!! Preetha laughing: "We feel relief that we don't have to be responsible anymore" Boyd laughing Do you? Emma: Well on the back we don’t.. that is not how I feel.. finished with a laugh! Boyd (sounding somewhat surprised) Obviously my team feels relief when I go into the arena, (Preetha laughs and says You are out of our hands..), the ground team don’t feel they have to help any more or have the pressure Preetha again laughs and says we just have to be there but without the shaking Boyd not always but most of the time I feel let me in the arena, let me attack, so mostly a positive mental attitude, occasionally you get held hostage and you’re a prisoner going into the arena but otherwise most of the time you are in a good positive frame of mind. Regarding what I am most proud of, so with the performance of the horses, the ultimate aim of training is that the performance of the horses to respond for the three days, so I need the performance of the horses for the three days to be optimum plus the result to be optimum and I am not happy unless I get the optimum result with the optimum performance and when that happens that is when I am most proud Boyd Exell Q: What do you look for in deciding where to put a horse in a 4? Drive and forward for leaders? Easy going for wheelers? Has a horse ever surprised you? A: "Our first decisions with where you think the horses will go in a team don' always turn out as you may have thought, so often we have to try and we are either pleasantly surprised or disappointed, so really it is a team decision with your ground team and you as a driver to decide will that horse cope or does that horse suit in whichever position you imagined." Boyd Exell Q: Can you give us an update on Demi? How is retirement? A: "Demi and Rambo are in love, they are fat and happy, and definitely enjoying a great well deserved retirement after a hard, successful seasons of competition." 17.01.2022 One of the most beautiful tests Thorsten and Coffee winning the German National Championship some years ago No Dressage test is ever perfect, but not much... to complain about here.... Pole at the highest point, working over the back, nose at or in front of the vertical, powerful, fluid, light contact but not dropped, working from the back to the front, reaching for the bit... A truly rare and beautiful sight to behold See more

16.01.2022 Day 2 - Answering the Questions! Q: With young prospects, is it important they're solid as a single first, or not? And why for either method. A: "Young Prospe...cts can either be started in single or started in pair, it depends on the level of experience of the driver, if the horse is going to be long term Driven in a pair or a team, there is no problem to start with pair and fall back to single after one year, if it is a horse planned for single driving, it is preferential from when it is a 3 or 4 year old when it is broken in to start as a single" Boyd Exell Q: How do you remember all the turns!?!?!?! I seem to go blank after the 1st gate! A: "The beauty of having a team of horses you have two extra brains on the back of your carriage, a navigator and backstep, and between the three somebody will know where to go. (finished that one with a hearty laugh)" Boyd Exell Q: If you could change one thing about the sport as a whole what would it be and why? A: "Carriage Driving is the most fun you can have sitting down, but if I could change something in the sport, I would make it an Olympic Discipline, to have worldwide recognition." 14.01.2022 A word to the wise ....... Its seems that all Carriage CARRIAGE DRIVING MANUFACTURERS AND THEIR FRANCHISES,seem to think it essential the each and every horse ...and pony must ( by default in some cases ) go into a four wheeled vehicle. When breaking a pony to harness it is ESSENTIAL that a two wheeled vehicle is used to learn turning breaching ( it is essential apparently that you have breaks on this four wheeled vehicle that would stop a ten tonne truck) and balance Equine balance. The mouth the correct use of breaching, to be able to turn a vehicle ( without the use of a turntable or delayed steering , whatever that is ) Is essential and the right and proper way to start a youngster .... The vehicle is NOT stopped on the tugs or by continued use of DISK BLOODY BREAKS . Together with the fact that most of theses four wheelers are just to much of a DRAG , not necessarily too heavy just too much " PULL " This dampens enthusiasm and diminishes movement and head carriage , and the owner is so inclined to put Suzie , her best friend Cathy and you can't leave Michael behind , the Bull Mastiff and herself ! The pony is just 11.2hh and its altogether too much work ! Two seats and a chiwawa is quite sufficient ! If you can't fit someone beside you GET OUT YOU ARE TOO BIG AND HEAVY ! Don't dismiss a two wheeler or be put off by manufacturer gabble and sales nonsense, be safe size appropriate and preferably a BENNINGTON

13.01.2022 The chance to reform EA is a once in a lifetime opportunity, but the state branches have inserted a veto that limits change to only what the states allow. With... the veto in place, just two states can block a constitutional change that is otherwise supported by the majority of voting members. Add your voice to ask the state boards to remove their veto power before the Special General Meeting on the 15th September. To speak up about this change you can :- * add your name to the Open Letter (see below) that has been sent to the Directors. We provide them updated lists of signatories daily. Send us a message via the message button at the top of this page to say you endorse the letter. * Write to your State board directly. * Let us know if you would like to help in your state directly and we will put you in touch with your local R4R member! * Write to the Sports Minister * Like and share this post!

11.01.2022 Damsma Drives to 11th at FEI CAI** in Netherlands Congratulations to Aussie driver, Andrew Damsma, who was competing in the FEI CAI** at Exloo, Netherlands over... the weekend. Andrew, with the help of the crew at Team Damsma and his beautifully turned out pair of bay boys finished 11th overall. Upon completion of the final test, being the cones course, Andrew said, "The best cones I have ever driven, so proud." Andrew extended thanks to all involved with help and assistance up to that wonderful point, including his fellow Australian trainer, Tor Van Den Berge, "[thanks] Tor for all your advice, encouragement and support, I'm very grateful for all the help you give me and it made all the difference to our success. Thankyou to everyone for all the support, I can't wait to see what the future holds." Well done Andrew! 11.01.2022 Boyd Q & A Recently we asked you to submit questions for Boyd and now we have the answers.. from the horses mouth as they say.. Each question is answered indiv...idually, it was really interesting to hear Boyds responses and we all learned something new! Enjoy! Q: Do you like mares, geldings or stallions best to drive? A: "Mares give extra effort but require extra attention, geldings are more steady in temperament, so generally you don't need a shining star in a team of horses, you need a team of horses that work together and support each other, but they are normally difficult in the stable but great in the carriage in my experience" Boyd Exell Q: What are some of the main points you look for when selecting a harness prospect? Can any horse be educated to harness or do you stay clear of the flighty ones? A: "We tend to follow patterns or horses that are bred for driving, such as Gelderanders, Lipizzaner, Welsh Cobs, we tend to stick with driving horses because generally your success rate follows a pattern, so it is whatever style you do, so whether it is a flighty horse it might be because it is a breed of horse that is not generally used for carriage driving otherwise we choose temperament first matching and movement second." Boyd Exell Q: The ‘Team’ spirit you have with your guys (equine & human) is extraordinary; almost like a tangible guiding energy aid ... That curious mind, into leg into hand we all strive to achieve with our horses ... and through you, with your team ... Quiet yet firm, understood, not forced; willing and responsive, with loyal and joyful enthusiasm; intuitively competitive ... Ultimately and perfectly balanced by YOU, as the accepted lead ‘mare’ My Question maybe one it’s not possible to answer; and I get that ... but the ‘HOW ?’ question, is one I’d love to hear from you in whatever comes close to describing your skill as a leader of Champions, one & all amongst your Team ? A: "Thankyou! I think one of the main keys to success is in having a horse in self carriage, which means self motivation, self balance in effect self carriage which means they are soft over their top line, soft through their body, which is easily said and difficult to achieve, but if you can motivate your horses to work independently and have their own initiative, likewise with people, then it becomes a team effort not a man made project" Boyd Exell Krisztina Horvath

10.01.2022 DRIVING | Congratulations to High Performance National Driving Gold Squad members Boyd Exell and Tor Team Van Den Berge on their results over the weekend at PSG... Lähden in the Horse Four In Hand competition. Driving legend Boyd Exell won the competition with a final score of 117,89 "A great way to dust off the cobwebs! Thankyou to the organising committee who coordinated a great competition and in exceptional heat and circumstances. We are pleased with the team who enjoyed getting out and about again!" said Boyd of his win. Fellow Gold Squad Driver Tor Van Den Berge and his team finished in an impressive 7th position on a score of 143,32. What makes this even more amazing is this was Tor's first start with a team Four Horses! "So 11 months after the World Pairs Carriage Driving Championships, so much uncertainty in the world with Covid19 and many months of hard work we have finally managed to make it to a competition..... however, we are now a team of four! The two gorgeous boys (Harry and Felix) owned by Owen and Janet Pilling have now been joined by our own and Ross and Miriam Carbery's beautiful Carbery Estate girls (Cato and Chino). Bred by Ross and Miriam in Australia! It's a great first outing as we got to compete in a dressage competition before the Four In Hand Combined Driving Competition began. We were so proud of how the Team came together and are very excited for their future! So many people to thank as we absolutely couldn't do this without you" said Tor of his fabulous result at the competition. Congratulations to both Boyd and Tor and their teams on the amazing achievements! 10.01.2022 It is with huge regret and disapointment that the FEI Driving World Championship Four-in-Hand Valkenswaard 2020 is cancelled. The FEI Driving World Championship... Four-in-Hand that was due to take place in Valkenswaard, the Netherlands next week, is cancelled. This is a big disappointment for the competitors and the Organising Committee. We would like to thank our supporters volunteers and sponsors for being so supportive in the past few weeks, we really are beyond words right now but will regroup and look to the future. "I am hugely disappointed for the competitors in Europe who have supported DVI in the spirit of the sport and those who have travelled from America and Australia all within the confines of Corona Regulations to be here and compete in this event, I am devastated for them" Boyd Exell Please refer to the website for the latest news - https://www.drivingvalkenswaard.com/news.html
