23.01.2022 Happy Birthday DTN! WASDA are proud to have been working with the DTN Team since before they were officially DTN and look forward to that continuing!

23.01.2022 WA Title Comes to a Halt! Last night at the Perth Motorplex we were all set to crown a new WA Speedcar champion but unfortunately Mother Nature had other ideas, raining the event out after the three heats were completed. Alex Bright, Vaughan Manders and Tom Payet all recorded heat wins, with Payet and Manders set to start the thirty lap WA final on the front row, but unfortunately the heavens opened up before the feature came out on track, cancelling the event.... No decision has been made on what will happen with the WA Title event at this stage, but as information comes to hand it will be released. At this stage we also still have two big weekends remaining on the WA Speedcar calendar with the annual Laurie Matthews Memorial to be held next weekend at the Make Smoking History Collie Speedway, while in a fortnights time we are scheduled to return to the Perth Motorplex for the Gold Cup finale, doubling as retro night, but as is this case with all events at the moment, this is subject to confirmation and further information will be released as it comes to hand. Renae Watson, Sharon Marriott and Veronica McCann have enjoyed success in several different Speedway genres but they may have more than just whats on the surface in common than that. Each has a fascinating background, perhaps a different motivation for ultimately motorvating but a mutual respect for what the others in the group has achieved. And how they got there. This will be a fascinating insight into what drove them, what still drives them and what bonds them. We cant wait... 17.01.2022 Calendar Update! As referred to when we first posted the 2020/21 season calendar, COVID-19 was sure to have an impact and tonight WASDA is pleased to reveal an updated season schedule. The season will now commence on the 31st of October at the Perth Motorplex with the season opener, after the original 24th of October opener was cancelled, while the 2019/20 Laurie Matthews Memorial is now the second event of the season at Collie Speedway.... Because of the early season shift around, the 2019/20 WA Title has now also been moved to the 21st of November. The next few shows remain the same as the previous schedule, with the next change being confirmation that Speedcars will run on the 6th of February, then again on the 20th of February, both at the Motorplex. Four more shows will then run as previously advertised while we now have an extra night of competition at the Motorplex, to be held on the 17th of April. This also means the Wild n Wingless Speedcars Country Series final at Geraldton City Speedway has also been pushed back a week to bring our season to a close on the 24th of April. Despite the changes, we still have a full and exciting season ahead and we cant wait to get back on track! 14.01.2022 IF YOU WANT SPEEDWAY BACK, DOWNLOAD THE APP! Speedway Australia has just completed a track inspection tour of 11 tracks in New South Wales, where the venues are... in great shape heading into autumn. The drought is behind them, grass has taken hold and storage dams are full. But as we all know, they are lying dormant until the COVID-19 crisis is behind us. On Friday the road map to a return to nationwide racing was released, but the Prime Minister was clear - in order for mass gatherings such as speedway events to occur there must be a huge uptake of the COVIDSafe phone app. If you havent yet downloaded the app, now is the time to do so. Privacy concerns seem to be the main reason for avoiding the app, but lets face it - if youre reading this on our Facebook page then be aware that the social media giant already collects far more data on you than the government can access via the app. Theres already a plan for NT racing to begin in June, but if we want the rest of the country to follow suit we all need to do our bit! A few more questions and answers if youre hesitant about downloading:- 1- Downloading the COVIDSafe app is mandatory. No, COVIDSafe is a voluntary opt-in contact app that helps health authorities know who has been in contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus. You can delete the app from your phone at any time. Deleting the app will also delete all the app information from your phone. 2 - The app allows access to all the information on my phone When you download the COVIDSafe app you register it by entering only your name, phone number and postcode, and selecting your age range. You will receive a confirmation SMS text message to complete the installation of the app. An encrypted reference code is generated for the app on your phone. This code is changed every two hours to make it even more secure. 3 - My movements will be tracked by the app The COVIDSafe app will never track your location. It uses Bluetooth to look for other phones that also have the app installed. It then securely makes a digital handshake, which notes the date and time, distance from and duration of the contact. The app cannot be used to enforce quarantine or isolation restrictions or any other laws. 4 - I am practising social distancing and staying at home so I dont need an app Without the assistance of technology, finding those who may have been exposed to the virus relies on people being able to recall who they have been around and knowing the details of every individual they have been in close contact with. In many cases, we dont know the names and contact details of those weve been in close contact with (for example, at the supermarket or on the bus). Receiving early notification that you may have been exposed to coronavirus means you can be tested or go into quarantine so your health and others is protected. 5 - I have already downloaded the Australian Government Coronavirus App and Whatsapp service The COVIDSafe app is a separate, new app. Its sole purpose is to improve the ability of health officials to quickly alert and contain virus outbreaks in the community. The Australian Government Coronavirus App and WhatsApp services are information services developed to ensure the community has access to timely and accurate information about coronavirus. 6 - The Australian Government will keep my information once the coronvirus pandemic is over At the end of the Australian pandemic, users will be prompted to delete the app from their phone. This will delete all app information on a persons phone. The information contained on the highly secure information storage system will also be destroyed at the end of the pandemic. While the pandemic is current COVIDSafe only keeps contact information for 21 days. This covers the maximum incubation period for the virus and the time it takes for someone to be tested for COVID-19. Contacts that occur outside of the 21-day window are automatically deleted from the users phone. 7 - My data will be shared with others All information collected by the app is securely encrypted and stored in the app on your phone. Unless, and until, a person is diagnosed with COVID-19, no contact information collected in the app is disclosed or able to be accessed. No Australian Government department, agency, Minister or staff member can get access to that information; the only person who can access the information will be the public health officer in a state or territory health department who calls the person who has coronavirus. The Australian Cyber Security Centre carried out a security assessment of the source code for the COVIDSafe app and the national database. Uploaded contact information will be stored in Australia in a highly secure information storage system and protected by additional laws to restrict access to health professionals only. 8 - It will run down my phone battery Battery consumption on tested devices is only marginally greater with the app running, particularly on devices that are already Bluetooth-enabled. To be effective, users should have the COVIDSafe app running in the background when they are coming into contact with others, such as at work, the supermarket or on public transport. Your phone does not need to be unlocked for the app to work and other apps can be used at the same time. 9 - I work at a supermarket so the app will record everyone I see for every shift No, state and territory public health officials will have the contact information only for other users who have been within approximately 1.5 metres of you for 15 minutes or more. 10 - The app is only available to iPhone users No, the app can be downloaded by both iPhone users via the Apple App Store and Android users via Google Play PS: a big thanks to all the tracks that welcomed us with open arms this week so we could undertake the legislated annual inspections.

Tony competed in Western Australia in the mid 70s, his first recorded race win (from the WASDA archives) on the 11th of October, 1974. ... Although not racing for a long time since, Tony remained around the Speedcar scene, he and his son Matt have been long time supporters of Rob & Dan Golding, Matt a valued member of the crew and Tony always willing to assist. Our thoughts and condolences are with the Varis family at this sad time. RIP

08.01.2022 Start your engines: Racing to resume at Perth Motorplex Perth Motorplex will reopen in August for track hire and in October for the drag racing and speedway ...season following a five-month closure due to COVID-19 Current venue operator VenuesWest is planning to transition to a new venue operator later in this financial year Planning for the 2020-21 motorsports season is underway The roar of dragsters and speedway cars will once again be heard at Perth Motorplex come October. COVID-19 caused an early end to the 2019-20 season followed by a complete venue closure over the winter months. VenuesWest will now finalise the process to secure a suitable venue operator. It is planned for a new operator to take over part way through the 2020-21 season. The season will be prepared under current COVID-19 restrictions, with the flexibility to adapt closer to the commencement of the season should restrictions change. An extensive transition plan will be implemented to ensure a smooth handover to the new operator, so motorsports competitors and fans can be assured that the return to racing will be as seamless as possible. Perth Motorplex achieved great results across drag racing, speedway, burnouts and special events last season and VenuesWest, looks forward to building on that success in the coming season. I look forward to another successful year of racing and events at WAs best motorsports facility," said Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray. The appointment of a new venue operator for Perth Motorplex will give long term assurance to the motorsports community. VenuesWest and its staff should be congratulated for their interim management of Perth Motorplex through the process to secure a long-term venue operator and I look forward to that announcement in due course.

08.01.2022 It is with regret today that WASDA announces that this weekends 32nd Annual Laurie Matthews Memorial (LJM) event for Speedcars, set to be held at the Make Smoking History Collie Speedway, has been cancelled. Due to unforeseen circumstances and all that is going on in the world today, especially with the result of the COVID-19, WASDA believes complying with the Prime Ministers recommendations is the best decision for all concerned as the safety of all WASDA teams... and members, the Collie Speedway team and of course the fans is the highest priority. At this stage no definitive decision has been made as to whether the LJM event will be rescheduled for a later date or completely abandoned to return bigger and better in 2021. For further details on whether Collie Speedway will still run a race meeting minus Speedcars this weekend, please visit their Facebook page. We appreciate all the support from Collie this season and look forward to racing there again next season. With the announcement by the Perth Motorplex just minutes ago that they too will be shutting their doors for the remainder of the season, this effectively means that the WASDA season is also now over. A big thank you to all those who have been part of this season and stay tuned for updates as to the plans for the club as we move forward to season 2020/21.

08.01.2022 ONLINE RULE CHANGE VOTING NOW LIVE! Today each 19/20 season registered Speedcar owner in Australia has received an email to enable online voting for season 19/...20 rule change submissions, without having to attend a club meeting. While this has been in plan all season to streamline voting and rule book updates, its especially useful now in the current environment. Each survey link is unique, and can be used only once. Owners with multiple registered cars will receive multiple emails with different links so be sure to submit your votes in each. Voting is anonymous aside from your state to allow for tracking of responses. If you are a registered car owner from season 19/20 and have not received an email, please contact [email protected] There are 10 proposals to vote on, which in total should take approximately 6 minutes on average. Pictures / diagrams are included where applicable. Voting can be completed on a PC/laptop, tablet, or smart phone. VOTING CLOSES: Midnight 16th May 2020 (AEST). This allows us to review and revise the rule book well before the season (hopefully) starts for 20/21. Emailed links will not work after this time. If you have any questions on the content of the proposals, as always you can discuss with your fellow members, Speedcar Advisory Committee (aka Tech Committee) reps, and your state delegates. If you experience any issues with the online voting form itself, feel free to contact [email protected].

08.01.2022 "THE PERTH MOTORPLEX SET TO ROAR IN SEASON 2020/21" Having been inundated by speedway fans and competitors as to the future of The Perth Motorplex, Im delighte...d to advise Talking About Speedway readers, that an assurance has been provided by The HON Mick Murray, MLA, Minister for Seniors and Ageing; Volunteering; Sport and Recreation, that money has been allocated in the current WA State Budget and a season in 20/21 will proceed as normal, subject to relevant State Governments Covid 19 restrictions being satisfied. I have received a huge number of enquiries from Perth Motorplex fans and competitors over the past three odd months, particularly during the Covid 19 Pandemic period. Rumours were swishing back and fourth within the news starved speedway community, about the future of WAs World Class Speedway venue, and rightly so. The word out on the street was that Venues West, the operator of the Perth Motorplex venue, had pulled the pin and there would be no upcoming season for 20/21. While even I was in a state of confusion and tried to remain positive, I struggled to understand the somewhat bizarre behaviour of Venues West during this period. While I understand that the Perth Motorplex may not be a high priority or a preferred venue in Venue Wests portfolio, I would have thought poor publicity surrounding its future was not in the Motorplex, Venues West or speedways best interest. Mr. Gavin Migro, the Perth Motorplex Speedway racing General Manager, indicated he could not provide any further information to Talking About Speedway at this time, given he was also somewhat unclear as to the venues immediate future. The Perth Motorplex is very well patronised by race fans, and by local, national and international competitors. While I accept that Speedway is a minnow sport, comparative to AFL and some other high-profile sports, the value to the economy and the worldwide publicity the Perth Motorplex provides Western Australia is quite incredible. Consider a current competitive Sprintcar team would cost somewhere in the order of between $500k to $1m to set up, with two cars, race transporter, spare engines, wings and other spares, the total industry in WA is probably worth around $300m, give or take. Added to this of course are other classes like speedcars, sedans, Formula 500s and speedway motorcycles. Not withstanding this, it is vital teams are given certainty so they can properly plan, budget and prepare for a full season of racing in the West Coast. Organising vital sponsorship to run teams for a full season is difficult in the best of economic circumstances, let alone during the COVID 19 period, where many businesses have suffered a huge financial hit. In fairness, Minister Mick Murray has been dogged in his approach and is very supportive of the Perth Motorplex venue. True to his word he has been in regular communication with me and provided assurances to Talking About Speedway that there would be a new season in 20/21 as soon as he was confident all the details had been worked through and Covid 19 in WA was being controlled. For now, Im satisfied with this outcome and like all Motorplex fans, we will have to take a deep breath and wait for a week or so until Venues West work through the final issues with the Perth Motorplex Speedway Management team. Having said this and accepting there will be a season this year, the Perth Motorplex needs a sustainable plan beyond the 20/21 season as it is totally unacceptable that this venue, the best of its type in the world, has a cloud over its short to long term future. Can you imagine if Optus Stadium was locked down in bizarre circumstances and its immediate future was in doubt? Football clubs, the AFL, the footy community and the media would be up in arms and no doubt, collectively, would mount huge pressure on the Premier and his Government, particularly leading up to a state election in March 2021. Im confident there is a workable solution and I would like to think common sense will prevail. Graeme Sinden.

05.01.2022 Payet Closes Season with another Win! Tom Payet has once again done what he has done eleven times before this season and that was to grab the Speedcar feature race win! In what was the final round of the Wild and Wingless Speedcar Country Series, held at the Geraldton Speedway, Payet again had a grand slam night, winning both heat races, the pole shuffle and then leading every lap of the feature race event to claim the victory. ... All of this winning only served to extend his lead in the overall series pointscore and completed what was a breakout season with two WA Title wins, a number of other blue ribbon event victories, the Perth Motorplex Track Championship and now the Wild and Wingless Speedcar Country Series. Tom Callaghan, in just his second meeting in Speedcars would do a great job to improve in each race: a fourth in heat one, a third in heat two and a second place in the feature, while rookie driver Corey Smith would also claim his first ever podium finish after completing the feature race in third place. Unfortunately for Smith, he would go upside down in turn two after the Chequers flew, but his night still finished on a high with his first podium! Beau Rogers managed to string together some good finishes over the night, while Ross Heywood performed well before suffering issues that saw him miss the final event. Vaughan Manders and Matt Watkins would both have their nights end prematurely with motor issues. With all the racing now completed for WASDA in season 2020/21, focus now shifts to the WASDA Awards night to celebrate the season that was, prior to a number of teams taking the opportunity to travel up to Darwin! 01.01.2022 Laughs with the General John Day. During the week of the 1991 New Year Day, our chassis was found to have cracks. It was welded up and a new chassis was order...ed. Graham went on to win the New Year Derby, lapping up to 4th place if I remember correctly. On the Saturday morning we decided to organise a BBQ to farewell this chassis as it had won a number of big races: Australia Speedcar Title, NT and WA state titles along with many other features. The bbq is cooking, beers are flowing and the General walks in fully dressed up and with a flag and flowers. We were all surprised. He proceeded to conduct a farewell ceremony for the car, it had us all laughing. It was completely unexpected but typical John, always ready for a laugh.
