25.01.2022 Sad news with the demise of Surfer magazine, the worlds longest running surfing magazine. Started in 1960 by John Severson, the magazine was a casualty of the digital age. W.A. Surf Gallery has original copies of Surfer in it's collection including Volume 1 Number 1 1960.

25.01.2022 Australian National Surf Museum closed to public due to corona virus.

24.01.2022 WA’s Jodie Cooper congratulates Pauline Menczer after being crowned World Champion in 1993. Visit the WA Surf Gallery to view more of Jodie's surf memorabilia.

24.01.2022 In November last year, we opened an exhibition dedicated solely to the women pioneers and female surfers of Western Australia who busted down the door of their male dominated sport and forged a way for women surfers today. We think it's pretty cool, and if you haven't seen it already be sure to check it out at Aravina Estate. Last week across the globe, our graphic designer Big Chief Design went for a sunrise surf in Scotland. Before jumping in, he spotted a couple of women... suiting up in the carpark. They were in their 60s, wearing thin wetsuits and carrying bodyboards. "I stopped them just before they went in and asked if I could take their photo. I told them I was involved in an exhibition for women surfing in WA." "They said to say hello! And the woman with the wooden board said she has had it for over 50 years!" It reminded us of the Granny Grommets of Albany - who feature in our exhibition - and that getting up for a sunrise surf with your best mate is still what it's all about. 23.01.2022 The latest edition of Pacific Longboarder magazine features a story and photos of the opening night of the W.A. Women in the Surf Exhibition. We look forward to happy times returning and the gallery will be brighter than ever..

22.01.2022 While we've been curating Western Australia's first ever musuem exhibition celebrating the incredible women surfers of WA, on the east coast, film Director Christopher Nelius has been working on something too. The Sideshow Movie - Working Title is a feature documentary of the untold story of how a band of renegade surfer girls in the 1980s fought to create their own professional sport, changing surf culture forever. The film documents the beginnings of the women's Pro Tour ...and the ASP, to present day where the World Surf League is leading the charge on equal prize money for men and women. It's a conversation that's close to our hearts and features Albany surfer, Jodie Cooper. If you've got a minute click on the link below to read more about the film, and if you have the opportunity to donate, click the donate button. https://documentaryaustralia.com.au//the-sideshow-working/ #wasurfgallery #thesideshow #documentary #jodiecooper

20.01.2022 Some snaps of new items in WA Surf Gallery.

19.01.2022 1962-63 Jennie Cordingley at Cottesloe Beach with her first Cordingley Bros surfboard. WA Newspaper pic. Jennies foam and fiberglass Cordingley Bros surfboard was made in the Bros parents backyard in Mosman Park (see early Lion decal on tail of board). The polyurethane foam surfboard blank was blown in a cast in the same backyard. This image and many more are on display the WA Surf Gallery, Aravina Estate Yallingup.

19.01.2022 Many of the images at the WA Surf Gallery have an intricate story behind them. And the people you see in the various photos often have lives that intertwine with each other. It's what makes the WA surf culture so special. Here's the story of this beautiful aerial image of the late Roger surfing Three Bears told by the photographer, Martine Perret. "On 18 April 2014, my then regular helicopter pilot, Brett Campany, rang to let me know the weather was wild and producing huge s...urf. He knew I wanted to get aerial shots of surfers riding those famous Margaret River big waves. Flying up the coast towards Yallingup, we spotted a big swell at ‘Three Bears’, a well-known break. The waves were beautifully formed, emerald green and with a glassy face. We spotted a surfer perfectly placed to catch the wave at its maximum height. I had to twist to keep him in the frame as we circled the scene in the helicopter. I fired a few frames and knew I had the shot I was looking for. A shot that would go on to become the cover of my book, Margaret River Region - From Above." "While finalising the printing of the book with John Scott at Scott Print in Perth, I casually told John it would be cool to find the surfer and give him a signed copy. A few weeks later, John rang to tell me that his cousin had managed to identify the man and that his name was Roger. He also gave me Roger’s mobile number. I was excited and rang him. We arranged to meet in Gracetown and he brought along the board he rode on that day I captured the photo. I also had the pleasure of meeting his partner Elizabeth. It is such a wonderful memory. The shot of Roger riding that big way at Three Bears really was meant to be." Sadly, Roger passed away and we were contacted by Big Wave Surfer, Alex 'Alfy' Cater, who is close with Roger's son, James. Alfy and friend Marcus wanted to bring James to the Gallery to surprise him with his father's photo. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, James has been unable to make it himself, but on Saturday Marcus and Alfy called James on video call while he was foiling in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and showed him his father's photo hanging proud in the Gallery. "We got the times wrong, daylight savings in NSW, James took the call while downwinding in the middle of the ocean! He was pretty wrapped and surprised!" - Alfy #WASurfGallery #AravinaEstate #SurfingWA #YourStory

12.01.2022 Last year the WA Surf Gallery opened an exhibition titled, 'WA Women In Surfing'. It tells the story of the grit and determination of West Aussie women who battled it out for their place in the line up, space in the magazines and respect from their male counterparts. On a larger scale, Girls Can't Surf is the true story of female surfers from across the globe encountering the same problems. "In the early 1980s, girls had gotten into pro surfing. They had the same dreams, bu...t they didn’t have the permission of the surf culture." - Nick Carroll Featuring WA champion surfer Jodie Cooper, along with Frieda Zamba, Pauline Menczer, Lisa Andersen, Pam Burridge, Wendy Botha, Layne Beachley and more, Girls Can't Surf is a wild ride of clashing personalities, sexism, adventure and heartbreak, with each woman fighting against the odds to make their dreams of competing a reality. And it's showing at the Perth Festival Lotterywest Films, Somerville Auditorium, from Mon 11 - Sun 17 January 2021.
