25.01.2022 More moody landscapes by Pat from our Thursday class. The final washes were mixed separately and consisted of Raw Sienna, then Cobalt Blue and Indigo. We prewet... the entire sky and distant hills and applied the colour with big mop brushes (separate brush for each colour) letting it run and mingle on the paper. Then we quickly added water with a large flat brush gently across everything to the bottom of the paper. This helps to portray the feeling of oncoming rain that is passing over the mountains and moving towards the viewer. See more

Below I share a wonderful expressive watercolour painting by a student from our Wednesday group, Oliver Lamond. Oliver loves to paint characters from movies and especially loves James Bond! Oliver's process always begins with a small photo reference propped beside him. Oliver doesn't trace, he carefully studies the photo as he draws on cartridge paper usually at about A3 size. He moves, his pencil slowly, methodically, and with precision and stops frequently to check with the photo. Often the lines Oliver uses are continuous and his confidence in this approach can be seen in the finished drawing. After drawing is complete Oliver uses watercolour paints to add colour and tone. Come and join Oliver and the other wonderful students to find your unique style!

14.01.2022 We are moving onto 'bigger' things! in Wednesday's Watercolour Class. Students braved larger sheets of paper and produced some fantastic results. Stay tuned for... more paintings. This demo painting below is on cheap Cartridge paper but produces interesting edges, as the pigment sinks in immediately. It needs to be painted fast and with 'bravado'. The fact that the paper is inexpensive always helps when I'm not feeling particularly courageous! Wednesday class will continue with these for the next 3 weeks. See more

07.01.2022 We are painting moody landscapes in our Thursday and Friday Watercolour classes. This beautiful atmospheric landscape is by Margaret! Often the simplest subjects make the best Watercolour paintings. The minimalist palette and simple composition say it all!

05.01.2022 A short video demonstrating the way I use a 'Dagger' brush (sometimes called a 'Sword' or 'Striper') to paint in watercolour. They are the brushes that are angled on one edge and have a flat ferrule. This one is 1/4" size. They are wonderful for depicting the Australian bush and scraggy foliage.
