23.01.2022 Australian kids need to eat more veg! Current estimates suggest that only five per cent of Australian children consume the recommended serves of vegetables each day. Educators can play an important role in promoting healthy eating to children in their care. ... Vegetable acceptance is mostly a learned behaviour, and childhood is the best time for teaching healthy habits. Eat the rainbow! Regularly exposing kids to a wide variety of vegetables is key. Providing and promoting vegetables in all the different colours of the rainbow is a particularly engaging way to do this. Offering a wide range of colours not only looks great, but also ensures that kids are consuming a variety of nutrients. There are lots of fun ways that you can do this: 1. Read the rainbow: Read books that introduce children to the idea of ‘rainbow vegetables’ and why we should eat them. 2. Cook the rainbow: Involve children in cooking a ‘rainbow recipe’, get them to choose the vegetables you use and help you put it together. 3. Eat the rainbow: Expose children to tasting new vegetables in a safe and exploratory manner. Check out the resources on our website for more rainbow-inspired activities and get kids eating more veg today! And keep an eye out for our 'Ask the expert' videos on fun activities to introduce children to new foods, coming soon to social media. Follow us on Facebook to make sure you don’t miss them!
