20.01.2022 There is lots of news media about COVID-19 and many people are concerned. If either a mother or baby is unwell it is important to keep breastfeeding. Breastmilk... contains protective antibodies to most viruses that the mother is exposed to. To reduce risk of transmission, those who spend time with your baby should wash their hands frequently and cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. If you need help with breastfeeding or would like to restart breastfeeding, call the National Breastfeeding Helpline on 1800 686 268. ABA has recently released some updated information regarding the care of babies when you are unwell with a respiratory virus: https://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/covid-19 www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/breastfeeding-and-influenza For specific information about the respiratory virus COVID-19 visit: UNICEF www.unicef.org//novel-coronavirus-outbreak-what-parents-sh www.cdc.gov//specifi/pregnancy-guidance-breastfeeding.html #COVID19 #virus #breastfeeding #protection #illness #information #support

12.01.2022 So much LOVE in one video! Amazing collection of beautiful births and beautiful birth partners

12.01.2022 Breast Feeding Feeding cues Rooting: Turning their head towards the side or opening the mouth Wriggling/Stretching or Fussiness... Sucking on anything they can, including their hands Crying: This is the last sign of hunger. A parent should not wait until their baby is crying, as this can cause them to gulp and choke while feeding Feeding Patterns The first feed will be within the first hour then usually 6-8hourly for that first 24hours as they are generally more sleepy following birth. Their tummy is only 5-7ml sized, perfect for the colostrum. Between 24-48hours old they will feed more frequently anywhere between 1-4hourly and they will be taking in more colostrum with a tummy size of 13ml. On the second night after birth be ready for feeding +++ with a pretty unsettled baby, this is to be expected as the baby is telling your body to get making that lovely milk. On average newborns will drink between 8 12 times per 24 hours, but it is also totally normal for a newborn to breastfeed every hour or once every 4 hours. It is also normal if a baby drinks more during certain times and less at other times. Cluster Feeding; this is when a baby feeds every half hour for a few hours at a time; they usually sleep for long periods of time afterward. Feeding Time Some babies only take 10 minutes of suckling, while others may take 45 minutes. As a baby gets older, they may start breastfeeding for shorter periods of time, and also may start feeding at more regular intervals. Its best to allow the baby to breastfeed until they decide they have had enough, and then offer the second breast. Doing this will ensure that the baby receives the fattier hind-milk. Signs that your baby is getting enough milk! Waking for feeds and then satisfied after suckling Wet and dirty nappies, appropriate for their age Feeding is not painful and therefore a good latch for good milk transfer Signs of a let-down No signs of dehydration Gaining weight Just remember - relax, look at your baby and that love will help the milk flow! #birthpreparation #calmbirth #breastfeeding #pregnancy #oxytocin #breastfeedinginpublic #newborn #tensteps #colostrum #breastmilk

09.01.2022 Baby Wearing Huge benefits for everyone!!! For mums, your oxytocin levels are increased through physical contact, assisting with the maternal bond, easier breastfeeding, all leading to a lowering of the incidence of postnatal depression. For the dads who are baby wearing this also has benefits for paternal bonding.... Babies/children who are carried are usually calmer as the primal needs are met. This is because they can see, hear, smell and touch you as well as easy access to feeding, even the motion for being carried helps with brain development, digestion, inner ear development which assists with balance and muscle tone is constant which helps overall physical development. Its been found that due to the close contact with other people as they are carried they can study facial expressions, learn languages and body language quicker and independence is established earlier. Decreased risk of positional plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) caused by extended time spent sitting or lying on their back. Kangaroo care which is where baby is skin to skin with the parents either with or without a sling, this has huge benefits to premies or ill infants. As well as parent-child attachment and parental satisfaction. Safety Basics.use the acronym TICKS Tight In view Close enough to kiss Keep chin off the chest Supported back Most of all enjoy the closeness!!! #babywearing #skintoskin #bonding #babycarriers #oxytocin #calmbirth #kangaroocare #dadsbabyweartoo #breastfeeding #mumlife #healthylifestyle #flatheadsyndrome #postnataldepressionawareness #mumstyle #closeness

09.01.2022 This is great knowledge to have...optimising fetal positioning while pregnant will make such a difference and understanding this will help if baby is still posterior in labour too!!

09.01.2022 Pelvic Floor What are the pelvic floor muscles? Its a layer of muscles that supports the pelvic organs and span the bottom of the pelvis.... What do these muscles do? This muscle layer has three holes or passages, the urethra, vagina and anus. The muscles normally wrap firmly around these to keep the passages shut. Although the pelvic floor muscle are hidden from view, it can be consciously controlled and therefore trained to be strong. These muscles play a huge role in controlling your bladder and bowel, sexual intercourse and during childbirth. Causes of Weakness Childbirth -after prolonged pushing, instrumental birth or a large baby. Excessive coughing - causing repetitive straining. Being overweight. Constipation Persistent heavy lifting - maybe as part of your job. Changes in hormone levels at menopause and just getting older. How do you strengthen your pelvic floor? Did you know that up to 50% of women perform pelvic floor exercises incorrectly? Seeking guidance when first learning is great, ask your midwife! Otherwise from a womens health physiotherapist. Try performing three sets of 10 spaced out throughout the day. Each repetition, squeezing your front and back passage and lifting internally (5 seconds), followed by full relaxation and dropping of the pelvic floor back to its starting position (5 seconds). To finish try 10 quick lifts to challenge coordination and speed of the pelvic floor muscles as this can come in very handy as practice for times of an unexpected cough or sneeze. Top tip is to try to find a trigger in life to remember to do these exercises. As women we should do these throughout our life, maybe try traffic lights or washing your hands!! Dont ignore the signs Things like leaking urine or faeces, incomplete bladder emptying, heaviness internally, discomfort or pain during sex, lower back aches, a dragging sensation or pelvic pressure. These are not normal and you dont need to suffer, these could be symptoms of a medical issues. See your GP they can help cure pelvic floor dysfunction!! #calmbirth #birthprep #pelvicfloor #prenatalcare #pelvicfloordysfunction #newmum
