17.01.2022 Mudgee and Gulgong residents are asked to limit all non-essential water usage including refraining from watering lawns and gardens until further notice. Follow...ing yesterdays storms, turbidity (a level of water clarity) within the Cudgegong River is extremely high and Council has temporarily ceased collection of river water for the operation of Mudgee and Gulgong Water Treatment Plants. Although summer storms like those experienced over the long weekend are not unusual for the region, coupled with severe drought conditions means that bare topsoils that are usually vegetated are being washed into the river and its tributaries, leading to unusually high amounts of sediments in the river water (high turbidity). Councils water treatment plants are not designed to treat such extreme raw water conditions. Council asks residents to conserve water wherever possible, allowing existing potable water supplies stored in town reservoirs to sustain water needs of Mudgee and Gulgong until the plants can once again treat river water. This is likely to be within a couple of days. Conserving water will reduce the risk of having to issue a boil water notice. Currently Mudgee and Gulgong town water is safe for consumption. This advisory is in place for Mudgee and Gulgong only. Kandos and Rylstone townships are unaffected. #mudgee #gulgong

16.01.2022 Last week we were treated with a presentation by Dan Florance from Sustainable Farms about Box Gum Grassy Woodlands, an endangered ecological community. The protection and regeneration of these areas can provide important benefits to your farm such as shelter for stock and crops, increased pollination and other ecosystem services due to more complex biodiversity. Some key takeaways: Protect existing remnant areas as a first priority by fencing off to exclude stock, this wil...l protect the trees root zones and allow it to set seed Strategically revegetate to connect existing areas of woodland and isolated trees, include diversity of native grass, shrub and tree species when planting and don't plant trees too close together, refer to local guides or contact Landcare if you're not sure what to plant. Protect any naturally regenerating areas with fencing or individual trees with guards Monitor plantings and newly fenced areas and be prepared to control weeds Retain fallen logs, dead trees (especially hollow bearing) and bush rock where possible. If you must move it, relocate it to an area where it can be used for habitat. Thanks for all who attended and to Dan for giving such an awesome and insightful presentation.

12.01.2022 Whats in Your Backyard ? Attention Boys and Girls . Heres an awesome project to get involved with. Mums and Dads you can help make the connections and enjoy th...e outcomes too . Here is an awesome project that you can get involved with and the timing couldnt be any better. Because most of you are at home and doing school from home this is something tat you could do for a session literally everyday. All you need to do is go outside and put your super sensitive observation goggles on and : look around at what you see. Look up ,look down look absolutely all around (actually they are the words of a song that Dirtgirl and I sing called nature detective. The Backyard is our home in dirtgirlworld) And that is exactly what this project is about . There are no rules other than you need to go outside and see what you see and you actually may see things that you havent seen before because you havent been looking, you havent given yourselfnthe time to observe exactly what is out there in your backyard world. Then you can take a photo of what it is you see and submit it. The categories you can submit it under are : biodiversity: this is a massive topic, it could be pictures of bird or pollinators such as bees and overflies and dragon flies, or it could be slaters and earwigs that you find by lifting up a pot plant to expose them food production: this could be pictures of your seeds, or seedlings, your veggies as they are growing, your backyard harvest from carrots to lettuce leaves again it is endless indigenous perspectives; this could be the trees and plants in your garden that are native to your area and the details that have made them important throughout history, a eucalyptus and its bark, native grasses, bush tucker, again the opportunities here are endless waste management;: shoe us your worm farms, the worms, your compost bins, your recycling, the kitchen bench tops and how you have filled them up, pictures of your compost and so on And I suppose the other thing t think about is go out into the yard and observe at different times of day. Think about not only the content of the picture but also the composition and light. Morning sunrises and afternoon sunsets cast a very different light . And different animals are about at different times of the day. Mums and dads heres a chance to make this into a little daily classroom project. I will let you know here on Facebook when I am going to go online this week and talk about what I see and find in my backyard and you can come and join me and talk about the project and even share some ideas of how you have been getting outside and being a nature detective. I know being at home is a rule at the moment but we can make so much of this situation and be doing the right thing by keeping apart from others and seeing and doing things that we mightnt usually have the time to stop and do or even think about. When Junior Landcare asked me to be involved with a project like this I was onboard before they even finished the question. Spread the word with your cousins, your school mates, your neighbours. 11.01.2022 Our September gathering of our Women in Ag COP had a picnic with the purple pea aka Swainsona recta. The threatened species is found in a number of locations around Mudgee and our members took the opportunity last week to learn more about the species. CTLLS Land Services Officer and project manager, Evelyn Nicholson showed us how to identify the species, its characteristics and habitat as well as the efforts being undertaken to save the species. After a tough couple of years, the plants are flowering and have good seed set. Keep an eye out for it at your place.

05.01.2022 A new website developed by the CSIRO will, for the first time, offer real-time feed projections for livestock producers. The website will use CSIRO modelling, soil moisture probes, and weather data to help farmers manage stocking rates and feed budgets. The tool is expected to have environmental outcomes, as well as helping producers prepare for future droughts. https://www.abc.net.au//new-farm-forecasting-app-/12176992

05.01.2022 ***Mudgee fodder distribution site to close, support to continue*** Livestock producers who have been impacted by bushfires in the Mid-Western region have acces...sed emergency fodder at the Australian Rural Education Centre (AREC) at Mudgee. Since the site opened on 27 December, 77 tonnes of fodder has been collected by 38 landholders. The emergency fodder distribution point will close at midday on Saturday, 4 January. Support for impacted primary producers and communities will continue as long-term recovery support commences. Support will continue to be provided through the Agriculture and Animal Services Hotline on 1800 814 647. The emergency fodder distribution point provided immediate assistance to livestock producers impacted by the bushfires and allowed them to assess their situation and make plans for their stock. Some useful information on livestock safety in emergencies, including your options after a natural disaster emergency, can be found by visiting the NSW Department of Primary Industries website https://bit.ly/39vxdMF For the latest information on the bushfires or road closures visit NSW Rural Fire Service or Live Traffic NSW.

So, whats driving ...this severe weather, and when will the current pattern break?
