16.01.2022 "A NEWBORN humpback whale sadly had to be euthanised after washing ashore at South Stradbroke Island yesterday. The infant, which was only one or two days old, ...had been struck by a boat or jet ski." - Gold Coast Bulletin Sad news indeed, and a glimpse of the very real potential that a cruise ship terminal 1.2km out to sea will impact heavily on resting and migrating whale calves and their mothers. Humpbacks & Highrises' Dr. Olaf Meynecke, regarded as one of Australia's leading cetacean researchers, has informed Save Our Spit that the location slated by Tom Tate for his terminal is smack bang in the middle of a documented humpback "resting spot" which is being utilised by more and more humpback mothers and their calves every year. This information was not correctly conveyed and no studies were undertaken ahead of council applying to the federal Government in their recent EPBC application. Shipstrike on whales is becoming a more prominent issue worldwide as whale populations recover and shipping traffic increases at the same time. Save Our Spit has no doubt that it would be a matter of when and not if whales or whale calves are struck and killed if an oceanside terminal were to be operated on the Gold Coast - even if the ships were few and far between.
16.01.2022 TOM TATE's GOLD COAST TERMINAL to Wipe Out World-Class Surf Break!!! "No impact on surfing amenity and function of nearby surfing breaks." That's the absolutely... unbelievable claim that the Gold Coast City Council led by Tom Tate are submitting to the Federal Government, in an application they have quietly made for a massive home port (base port) and international shipping terminal off the surf beach at Philip Park on The Spit. The proposal is for an 800m long swell-blocking breakwater island to be built right behind a world-class beach break. They now want it as a home port, with 150 ships per year, refuelling facilities, the taking of sewerage and garbage plus much more. Facilities, ships and beach will be subject to international-standard exclusion zones They also want at least 6 hectares of irreplaceable public parkland, coastal reserve and beachfront sealed off for their terminal - ripped out of the last bit of undeveloped coastline left in the city. They are actually telling the Federal Government there'll be no impact on the environment, on marine animals such as whales, on any ecology, no impact to surf breaks, surf amenity or impacts on cultural significance or anything. You MUST ACT NOW if you want this surf break and your public beach and park to not be wiped out by this. DO NOT TRY TO ENGAGE COUNCIL OR THE MAYOR, THEY WILL WASTE YOUR TIME AND IGNORE YOU WRITE, EMAIL. CALL: to the Premier of Queensland and the local Federal Member for Moncrieff, Steve Ciobo - google them for contact details SUBMIT: your opposition to the Federal Government (you have 7 days from today to do it and council deliberately did not advertise this!) http://epbcnotices.environment.gov.au/referralslist/ - referral number 7899 Advice on submissions here - http://www.environment.gov.au//public-not/assessment-help All the documentation is there - PLEASE READ IT ALL (unlike our the Gold Coast's deputy mayor and acting mayor who admitted she hadn't even read it yesterday). If you have a coastal engineering background, environmental background, meteorological background, a cultural or heritage background or you are just a concerned local you must lodge a submission before this time next week! Councillors did not vote to send this application to the fed Government! Council has deliberately and consciously chosen to NOT advertise this call for public submissions!!! They are trying to keep this all from YOU!!! SHARE: this video and comment
15.01.2022 This is a MUST ATTEND event for anyone concerned with the future of The Spit, Broadwater and our beaches, parks and foreshores.
13.01.2022 The RSPCA should have Tom Tate arrested for flogging a dead horse that is Terminally ill.

07.01.2022 Deputy Mayor Donna Gates spectacularly rising in council to support the motion to fill in Black Swan Lake and hand it over the the Turf Club - the very same Tur...f Club she has been a member of since 2003. Shortly after her glowing speech in council, she ascended to the position of Director at the Gold Coast Turf Club. The motion, put forward by Gary Baildon, was a complete backflip on his clear public election campaign pledge to protect the lake and leave it as a public bird and wildlife sanctuary in perpetuity. No wonder the CCC is interested in investigating this hive of conflicts and highly questionable conduct. See more

06.01.2022 Because nothing says 'we don't care about your marine environment' like a cruise company releasing thousands of balloons into the sky to celebrate a mega cruise... ship's "maiden call" to a destination. Latex balloons, like the ones depicted here released by Princess Cruises, kill birds and marine life such as turtles every day. Whilst natural latex is biodegradable, it can take many months or even years for these balloon fragments to break down - add in the many other ingredients and dyes used in balloons and it may take even longer. Eventually, if a balloon makes it to a point where it starts to break down (if a turtle hasn't eaten it yet), then the micro pieces exist even longer and can be eaten by plankton and micro organisms which ultimately puts it back into the food chain on its way up towards larger fish and ultimately humans. The practice of mass balloon releases is regarded as grossly irresponsible and extremely hazardous and to the environment - particularly hazardous to marine environments and key marine species such as the endangered hawksbill turtle. With so many alternative ways available to host a celebratory event or moment, we think this speaks volumes about an industry that is outwardly negligible, stuck in the past and doesn't give a damn about the places they visit or the seas they traverse. We did a little digging on this topic and learned that it is widely accepted in the scientific community that - The balloons do not break into micro pieces when they burst The pieces can be distributed unpredictable and over a vast range of area when they rain back down from the sky The pieces can closely resemble food items such as jellyfish, fish and prey items Balloon latex pieces can take many months or even years to break down in the environment After time, the more the latex breaks down into smaller pieces, the more likely it is to be absorbed back into the food chain in the ocean and eventually end up back on the dinner plate of humans who eat ocean fish and products

03.01.2022 BREAKING: "If you build it, they might possibly come, and will probably leave." Facilities not quite perfect, a couple of minor technical constraints, a couple ...of ships unable to dock and ...... boom, Carnival completely pulls the pin on Fremantle! It's been labelled a "cruise crisis". How on earth will any terminal on the Gold Coast, oceanside or not, ever provide any kind of bankable reliability (weather, facilities, wind, swell, depth etc) for any major cruise line company? We'll answer that right now for you all - quite simply, any Gold Coast terminal will never provide the kind of reliability and availability, safety and technical appeal that would give any cruise company confidence in scheduling their ships here on a regular basis. Brisbane offers a nearly-all-weather option that won't put their safety and scheduling in jeopardy, THAT'S WHY THEY ARE INVESTING THEIR OWN CASH THERE!
02.01.2022 PROFESSOR ROSS KLEIN - A REAL CRUISE INDUSTRY EXPERT At a recent full council meeting, on Tuesday October the 18th, Mayor Tom Tate was challenged to provide any... proof or evidence that there is any support for his terminal idea coming from any major cruise company or the industry, and he was questioned as to how council could vote on the matter without having any documented information or written proof of industry interest. He based his argument on a conversation he claims to have had with Carnival CEO Ann Sherry a few years ago. Mr Tate told councillors that he would be meeting fresh with Carnival CEO Ann Sherry a few days later on the Friday (Oct 21st 2016) to seek her possible input, support or endorsement of his idea for an oceanside terminal. Mr Tate said he would report back to councillors on the results of the meeting. Nobody has heard anything since. We recently obtained very current correspondence from Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival, that painted a less-than-glowing view of Tate's Spit oceanside terminal idea where Sherry cited "difficult logistical challenges" for the idea whilst asserting that her company has no interest in involving themselves with decision to build on the Gold Coast or not, also adding that Carnival has no interest in involving themselves in the politics, and that the decision to build a terminal is one that she believes should be taken locally without her company's participation or input. In a nutshell, the request to show what level of support they could potentially offer resulted in a reply offering no support. In stark contrast, Sherry also renewed Carnival's vows of full support and investment to the proposed Brisbane Mega Terminal project, and is happy to shout it to the sky that Brisbane is Carnival's primary focus. Save Our Spit recently caught up with one of the world's leading independent cruise ship industry experts, Professor Ross Klein from Canada. Over the coming days and weeks we will be publishing parts of our interviews with Klein and some of the substantiated expert advice and commentary we witnessed during his visit. Professor Klein approached the Mayor to seek a meeting with the Mayor during his visit - he was told that the Mayor was not available to meet with him. Professor Klein has testified before the US Congress multiple times on matters to do with the cruise industry and is regarded by some to be the leading independent cruise industry authority in the world.
