22.01.2022 Dear Waverley Blues Members It is hard to believe we are reaching the end of the year. On one hand so much has happened in 2020, yet in reality there was little to become excited about. What we can say as we approach 2021 is your football club is in great shape ready for a successful season ahead. We had our first full club committee meeting last night with planning underway for next season and all is in order.... Our on-field preparation is in place with Tom Langford our senior coach rallying the players in readiness for a big year ahead. Alex McDonald - Junior President reports our Junior teams and players will be ready come the first round which we are sure will bring smiles from all involved. Over the summer holidays we encourage all players to remain active, keep fit & have fun with family and friends while remaining safe. To all members we trust you will be able to have a relaxing and enjoyable time doing what brings happiness and fulfillment to one and all. 12.01.2022 The Waverley Blues Football Club, past players and community is saddened by the sudden passing of former Mt. Waverley-Burwood coach and Southern Football Netball League Hall of Famer Ian Birkett. Affectionately known as Rabbit during his decorated playing career, Birkett was one of the genuine superstars of the old Eastern Suburbs Churches Football Association one of the precursor competitions to the now-SFNL. A blisteringly quick on-baller that was equally dangerous up for...ward, Birkett played over 400 games with Burwood United and Mt. Waverley-Burwood, winning four ESCFA A-Grade Best & Fairest awards between 1985 and 1990. Rabbit was the inaugural coach of the newly formed Mt Waverley-Burwood Football in the mid 1990s. He also played in two flags with Burwood United (1983 and 1985) and topped the league goalkicking in 1985 (84 goals) and 1987 (70 goals). Such were Birkett’s playing achievements that he was recognised as one of the inaugural inductees into the Southern Football Netball League Hall of Fame in 2015. But despite his remarkable on-field heroics, Birkett remained a humble champion that shied away from the spotlight. "Rab" was loved by everyone who played football with him and remained good friends with many former team-mates long after their footy careers had ended. Our condolences to his family and friends on his tragic passing. RIP "Rab"
