25.01.2022 Congratulations to Rebecca Giggs winning this years The Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award. In 'Fathoms: the world in the whale', Giggs blends natural history, philosophy, and science to explore these questions with clarity and hope. In lively, inventive prose, she introduces us to whales so rare they have never been named; she tells us of the astonishing variety found in whale sounds, and of whale ‘pop’ songs that sweep across hemispheres. She takes us into the deeps to discover that one whale’s death can spark a great flourishing of creatures. We travel to Japan to board whaling ships, examine the uncanny charisma of these magnificent mammals, and confront the plastic pollution now pervading their underwater environment. 25.01.2022 Today's Australian Reading Hour! Grab yourself a book and nestle down to celebrate the joy of the written word, just like these two stars at the official opening of Waverley Library in 1967.

23.01.2022 Hanukkah is not one of the most religious Jewish festivals like Passover or Rush Ha'Shana, but it is full of joy, happiness, and fun, especially for kids who grow up in Israel. After 2 months at school, here come the 8 days of Hanukkah holiday break. Gathering with family and friends during these 8 winter nights for Candal lighting, songs, eating lots of Sufganiot (traditional Hanukkah jam doughnut) and latkes (traditional fried potato cake), and playing with the svivonim (dr...eidels) is great fun for kids and adults. Chocolate coins and money for kids is also part of the tradition. I always remember how excited we were when having the first Sufgania a few days before Hanukkah, all the school celebrations and the kid's music and play festivals. Every year, around Hanukkah, the Israel Centre for Blind organise the Annual Fund Raising for the Blind and it has become part of Hanukkah tradition to donate to the foundation. School students are sent to shopping centres and other public places to help raise money for those who cannot see the lights. Hanukkah is not just about receiving; it is also about giving to others. Wishing you and your loved ones a happy and safe holiday season. - Idit, Library Assistant

21.01.2022 Morris-Marr’s ‘Fallen’ wins 2020 Walkley Book Award Investigative journalist, writer and broadcaster Lucie Morris-Marr has won the 2020 Walkley Book Award for Fallen: The inside story of the secret trial and conviction of Cardinal George Pell (A&U). The judges said, ‘This compelling analysis of the trial of George Pell stood out for the sheer quality of the writing, the momentum of the story and new insights on how power operates in Australia. Morris-Marr adeptly builds context around a complex trial that grabbed global attention with a clear dissection of the legal process, media machinations and the legacy for a besieged Catholic Church, while weaving in her personal and often harrowing experience. Her tenacity and insight has produced a brilliant and eye-opening book.’ Source https://bit.ly/2J33sKS
