21.01.2022 Today is Indigenous Literacy Day, a day where we celebrate Indigenous stories, languages and culture, and acknowledge the Indigenous literacy gap. Only 36% of I...ndigenous Year 5 students in very remote areas are at or above national minimum reading standards, compared to 96% for non-Indigenous students in major cities, according to the 2018 National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). The situation is improving but there is still a long way to go and the challenges are immense. Find out more: https://bit.ly/3iIAVWZ To celebrate Indigenous stories and culture, families with young children can access numerous interactive stories on StoryBox Library, many of which are read by Aboriginal storytellers. Simply go to StoryBox Library on our website, log in using only your library card number and input indigenous to the search box to see all the stories available. www.monlib.vic.gov.au/storybox You may also like to revisit our Reconciliation Week Storytime video by Michelle who read The Outback by Annaliese Porter. https://youtu.be/3Uuh6cmqCss To learn more about the value of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples first languages, join the Indigenous Literacy Foundation for a Live YouTube Event at 12.30pm today: www.youtube.com/user/IndigenousLiteracy/featured #indigenousliteracy #readingopensdoors #librarieschangelives
