24.01.2022 the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has published a report into buy now pay later schemes, which they found particularly hit younger people. The research shows people "who use buy now, pay later arrangements are experiencing financial hardship, such as cutting back on or going without essentials for example meals or taking out additional loans, in order to make their buy now, pay later payments on time".

Financial Counselling Australias bi-annual Rank the Banks report found buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) providers are among the most difficult financial institutions to deal with. The report gives each financial institution a score out of 10 (with 1 being the lowest) based on the experience of surveyed financial counsellors."
