15.01.2022 WAYACHAMP's Term 4 Program is halfway through the term now, with a string quartet and piano quintet making wonderful progress and enjoying making music together each week. 10.01.2022 10 of the best... #1: Spontaneous music making This had to be included as the number one moment because it captures the essence of WAYACHAMP - the pure joy of making music with others. Captured backstage before the Elite Final Concert, the students broke into an improvised version of "Pachelbel's Canon", with a rather well balanced coverage of melodies and bass line! 10.01.2022 A wonderful start to Spring WAYACHAMP! Day 1 started off with the opening address by Sophie, a workshop on "How to Rehearse" with Haydn played by Shaun Lee Chen, Helena O'Sullivan and Kathy Potter then onto Elite Orchestra and Masters tutorials and rehearsals. After lunch the groups switched and the Elite students rehearsed and had tutorials in their small groups while the Masters students did orchestra with Elise Chong. To finish the day off, Masters students worked together... in small teams to create a group composition focusing on team work and working to a theme. Hopefully a few composers in our midst! Huge amounts of learning and fun by all! 09.01.2022 Another massive day at Spring WAYACHAMP! Day 3 saw all the groups making great headway with their pieces. Such beautiful blending of sounds and conversational playing. Students were treated to a masterclass with special guest and Chair of Strings at the UWA Conservatorium of Music, Assoc. Professor Suzie Wijsman offering advice to the chosen groups. Thanks and well done to Arwen, Aaron, Nathan, Raphael, Jade, Anish and Tinnie for participating in these masterclasses, and thank you to Suzie for your valued contribution! Now we hope you all sleep well tonight for another monster day tomorrow, including the Final Concerts - hooray!

02.01.2022 Thursday Workshop | Next week WAYACHAMP students will be working with Rupert Guenther in a workshop on Improvisation. Rupert is passionate about sharing his love of improvisation with classical musicians, which helps overall musical development and can bring so much added joy to music making. His breakthrough method of teaching improvisation to classical musicians has been taught at institutions all over the world. About the workshop, Rupert says "Experience this very simple... way to improvise your own music, solo or chamber music with friends. Especially for classically trained musicians, this workshop starts off by showing you ways to build your improvisations from a compositional mindset - using all the sounds, subtlety and nuance we are used to in classical music, including the way we bow the instrument, the touch and phrasing, dynamics, as well as rhythmic and articulation components. You will learn how to flavour each improvisation in towards any classical styles you wish, including gypsy music..even sounds from other cultures from around the world.
