24.01.2022 WAYO ARTIST FOCUS - Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Overture to the Song of Hiawatha (1900) https://wayo.com.au/event/2021-rit Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was one of the most progressive writers of his time. Born in Holborn in 1875 to an English mother and a father originally from Sierra Leone, he liked to be identified as Anglo-African and was later referred to by white New York musicians as ‘Black Mahler’, owing to his musical success. Joining the Royal College of Music at the tende...r age of 15 years old, Coleridge-Taylor’s affinity for music was palpable. He carried a personal recommendation from Edward Elgar, and was heralded as a genius by the influential music editor and critic, August Jaeger. The Song of Hiawatha, which included the epic Hiawatha Overture, was based on a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Despite the black community’s ongoing battle against racism, the first part of this work, Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast, was so popular that it led him to embark on three tours of the United States. His classical compositions were heavily influenced by traditional African music, and were so well received that in 1904, he was invited by President Theodore Roosevelt to visit the White House a rare event at this time for a man of African descent. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor died of pneumonia on 1 September 1912 in Croydon, at the age of 37. The inscription on Coleridge-Taylor's carved headstone includes four bars of music from the composer's best-known work, Hiawatha, and a tribute from his close friend, the poet Alfred Noyes, that includes these words: Too young to die: his great simplicity, his happy courage in an alien world, his gentleness, made all that knew him love him. We are privileged to be able to perform this work for you in our upcoming concert, Rite & Revolution, at Perth Concert Hall on Saturday 10 July. Get your tickets here https://wayo.com.au/event/2021-rit Proudly presented by Woodside Energy.

11.01.2022 WAYO delves into the world of Dance! https://wayo.com.au/event/2021-rite/ With the first half of 2020 providing significant downtime for office staff, we laid the groundwork for several initiatives which we planned to launch (if at all possible) in 2021. We are thrilled to introduce you to Merge, our newest venture launching this July Season! Merge is a brand new initiative from WA Youth Orchestras nurturing interdisciplinary collaborations between WAYO and other creative ind...ustries to further the cultural and performative experience of our members. We personally seek out, commission and produce these collaborations independently, making this a completely unique offering in the Australian arts landscape. RITE & REVOLUTION - on sale now https://wayo.com.au/event/2021-rite/ The first of these collaborations combines the awesome force of our 107 piece flagship orchestra with a choreographer, ensemble of dancers, and 25 guest musicians. For this performance, WAYO have personally commissioned up-and-coming home grown choreographer, Scott Elstermann, to compose a dance work to a piece of orchestral music by contemporary Western Australian composer, Rebecca Erin Smith. In celebration of Western Australian stories and home grown talent, this work will bring these disciplines together in a symbiotic exploration of movement and sonority on the Perth Concert Hall stage. To partner this work, the orchestra will perform Stravinsky’s enigmatic ballet The Rite of Spring in its totality (a rare occurance in today’s concert halls). Our dancers will return to the stage with fresh new choreography, crafted by Elstermann, bringing to life a contemporary perspective on a historically pivotal work. Stay tuned for profiles on all of our magnificent dancers in the coming weeks!
