16.01.2022 UPDATE: many thanks to @miker1509, history buff, who discovered an amazing amount of info. It appears that the card writer is Ernest S Riley who enlisted in March 1916 at Ballarat, aged 18.5. He had been trained and sent to France by the time he wrote the card (Nov 1916). He spent some time in England with trench foot, and possibly pneumonia. He was killed in action on October 3 1918, just over a month before the end of the war and within days of his battalion being withdrawn. His brother Cornelius was was also killed in France in April 1917. Tragedy unearthed from a small card in a book. History brought to life. Thank you @miker1509

15.01.2022 I love the flashes of invention and community that have come out of this pandemic. Yesterday I bought a book from a vending machine in Carlton. The machine is a community/ trader enterprise. Not only did I get a book. It dropped down with a $5 Gift Card from Readings! Also in the machine are goodies from La Mama, the Poppy Shop, Heart Attack and Vine Bar, Agostino Wines and many more. 15.01.2022 A little heartbreak on a Wednesday afternoon. In a pile of old books, mostly awarded to Lily and Violet Tait by the Sabbath School of Ballarat North between 1907 and1915, loosely inserted in A Daughter of the West, was a Field Service Postcard. It is a form card, cross out what you don't want, write only your name and date on the back and receiver's name and address on the front. Private Rowley hasn't heard from Lily Tate for a long time. He can't write anything here on threat of the card being destroyed. Dated 6th November 1916.
