18.01.2022 QLD Licenced Prawn Trawler Operator Apprehended A QLD licenced Prawn Trawler operator has been apprehended during a joint response by NSW DPI Tweed Heads Fisher...ies Officers and NSW Police Marine Area Command. On 12th of August this year officers boarded the Queensland endorsed prawn trawler, which operates out of Southport, QLD where investigations identified that the trawler was operating illegally without endorsement to take prawns from NSW waters. The trawler had been targeting prawns in NSW offshore waters, in approximately 55 fathoms, 12 nautical miles east off Kingscliff, NSW. The trawler was directed back to Tweed Heads where three trawl nets were removed and seized. About 70 kg of prawns were returned alive to the water. The maximum penalty for a person who uses a net to take fish for sale in NSW waters without the appropriate endorsement is $22,000 and/or 6 months imprisonment (or both) for a first offence. The maximum penalty for a person who takes fish for sale from NSW waters without a commercial fishing licence is $110,000 for a first offence. A prosecution brief is being compiled and the master of the vessel is expected to appear in court over the charges. 12.01.2022 Tweed Reef Update: Construction Almost Complete! Construction of the 10m high steel tower and 32 concrete modules which will form the innovative Tweed Offshore ...Artificial Reef is now almost complete! Australian company Pacific Marine Group will soon begin loading its massive 55m barge with the completed reef modules for the trip to Tweed Heads. The reef will be installed in 25m of water 7.5km south-east of the Tweed Heads river entrance. The reef is being built to increase recreational fishing opportunities in the local region and is being constructed using funds from the recreational fishing licence fees. Unlike more expensive options such as scuttled ships, the new Tweed reef is purpose-built and designed to provide generations of local and visiting Tweed fishers with a quality new fishing location. The mammoth steel tower will be surrounded by 32 concrete arrowhead modules, each of which will be 5m high. This reef structure will provide new habitat for prized angling targets such as snapper, samsonfish, pearl perch, cobia and mackerel. Mobilisation and installation of the reef will require reasonably stable weather conditions but DPI Fisheries is hoping it will take place in the near future, meaning the reef should be producing the goods for Tweed fishos for the start of the summer fishing season! Stay tuned for further updates on the installation. Meantime, check out https://bit.ly/3dx4lp3 for more info on DPI’s Offshore Artificial Reef Program. This is your fishing licence at work!

08.01.2022 We are finally back in full swing after a long, three month closure during which, we took the opportunity to give the Keely Rose a well deserved tidy up and fre...sh new look. Big thanks to Jeff and the team at Cooloola Tint & Sign Writing for our awesome new graphics! Whilst charters were not permitted during covid-19 lockdown, the crew and I kept the vessel active to keep her in top shape. One day offshore was particularly sweet when we dropped into a nice show of fish and I plucked out this massive 22 kilo Red Emperor. 1040mm length. What fishing dreams are made of! See more

01.01.2022 We would like to thank all fishers for observing the snapper and pearl perch closure This annual closure aims to provide protection for snapper while spaw...ning and helps to rebuild these depleted stocks. Snapper and pearl perch are now open to fishing. Remember that snapper have a possession limit of 4 per person with no more than 1 over 70 cm. There is boat limit of 8 snapper and no more than 2 over 70 cm when there is 2 or more people onboard. The minimum legal size for snapper is 35cm. Pearl perch must be at least 38cm and have a possession limit of 4 per person.
01.01.2022 ***IMPORTANT DOLPHIN FISH INFO, PLEASE SHARE, it will benefit all Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunny Coast (anywhere with fads) fishos, you’ll catch more in the long r...un.*** *If you catch a Mahi with an orange tag, please release, it’s an important specimen* *See photos for the orange tag to look for* On wednesday we had USC PhD student Felicity Osborne, Dr Adam Barnett from James Cook University and Dan from the DPI Fad program on board to conduct acoustic tagging of Mahi Mahi off a few key fads on the Gold Coast. These tags are about $500 each and track the fishes movements to gain a better understanding of where to place MORE FADS. Totally beneficial information to every fisho on the GC. We were lucky enough to be able to not only witness the implanting of the tags but also we were able to capture a few for our dinner aswell. Tagging took around 5 mins per fish, fish was placed upside down in a cradle with saltwater being pumped into its mouth. If you catch one of these fish with an orange external tag then it’s beneficial to everyone that you let it go ASAP. If you’re hard up for a dolly then at the very least please remove the acoustic tag (little black battery looking thing implanted inside the fish, not visible) and contact The number on the orange tag to return it. Thank you Felicity, Adam and Dan for coming and having us be a part of this research. Great day.
