09.01.2022 Next up in our interview series we have patrol member Lucy Alkhlawi. Question 1: What season did you join the club? 2016/17... Question 2: Why did you become involved in Surf Life Saving? An amazing woman, Rose Carn, was one of my teachers at Monbulk high school and encouraged me and a few others to take part in something called a bronze camp at Sandy Point. At first I was hesitant about the amount of exercise and theory it required during a week in my summer holidays which actually made me not do it in the 2015/16 season (I was lazy) but the next year in 2016 I was determined to make Rose proud. Question 3: What drew you towards being a lifesaver at Waratah Beach SLSC? On my first camp I unexpectedly, thoroughly enjoyed the water skills and board skills, and learnt a lot of interesting facts about the ocean and how it works as well as how to provide first aid to beach goers if it were ever necessary. My interest of the IRB (an unusual machine I had never seen before) also sparked my sense of curiosity and competitive nature to do everything and anything I can before anyone else. Question 4: Who were/are your mentors in Surf Life Saving? My biggest mentors would be almost all of the more senior members, but to narrow down a few would have to be Cam Browne, Aidan Moriarty, Jess Horsburgh, Jameson Trainor, and Keegan Clarke. All of these people have helped me learn and grow in specific areas such as, lead and teach me on Dev Camp, teach me from scratch how to compete in the first aid and patrol competitions, train me from scratch of how to crew and drive IRB’s competitively, how to teach others and become a better leader, and also provided me with general support, entertainment, their friendship, and life lessons they’ve taught me from when I was a very immature 16 year old to a now mildly immature 19 year old.. Question 5: What keeps you coming back? The amount of life long friendships and relationships I have made with so many people keeps me coming back every single year. I love the energy all the members bring and somehow it is a place where I get along with everyone. I am in love with the cute little town of sandy point and it’s most stunning beach that I’m so lucky to stay at all summer with so many amazing people and patrol

07.01.2022 If you’re down at the Inlet tomorrow you might just see a helicopter circling around. If so it is most likely a planned training exercise being run by Life Saving Victoria MSAR WBSLSC, subject of course to the helicopter not being called out to a real rescue.
