24.01.2022 The recent mouse plague in Australia left many places devastated, and NSW is using a more toxic pesticide, bromadiolone, to save the crops. Bromadiolone stops the clotting of blood, causing internal bleeding and death in a few days. However, this is terrible news to the 5,000 to 10,000 superb parrots (Polytelis swainsonii) left. Though unintentional, bromadiolone was distributed in the areas where the threatened superb parrots are found. Mass bird death warns that the poison ...should be stopped or we risk losing precious species. This also includes mice-eating predators as the poison passes down the food chain. More deaths are expected as we approach the spring breeding season. Bromadiolone is obviouslyly not the solution to this problem. BirdLife Australia has written to urge APVMA to decline the further distribution of bromadiolone. Here is the link to their petition: https://www.actforbirds.org/ratpoison _ #Threatened #SuperbParrot #NewSouthWales #Pesticide #bromadiolone #MousePlague

22.01.2022 Gippsland was covered with spider silk after a quick and huge flood in eastern Victoria. These fragile silk blankets look like waves in light breeze, and are quickly broken up. Because these spider silks are lighter than air, millions of spiders use it to quickly get onto higher ground. This behaviour is called ballooning, and spiders can also use it to fly 100km in the breeze. These webs are made by ground dwelling spiders, including Ambicodamus sp. They are not web-builders..., and each spider only threw up one thread for this. This spectacular sight really shows just how much spiders are around us. These spiders are not dangerous though, their fangs are too short to penetrate human skin. Check out the video in our stories. _ #Gippsland #Victoria #Flood #Spider #ballooning

14.01.2022 7 Tasmanian devil joeys were born recently after 3000 years of absence on the Australian mainland. They were found in the pouch of 2 Tassie devil females in a 1000 acre fenced wildlife preserve. These 2 females were part of the 26 devil group released in late 2020. These devils were only provided with protection from predators, but no food was given. ... It remains a challenge for the devils to survive on their own in unprotected areas. Predators and farmers are ready to challenge their very existence. Regardless, these 7 joeys are a small step towards having devils back on the mainland again. Hopefully international students will also be back on the mainland soon. _ #TasmanianDevil #Marsupials #NewSouthWales #Australia #LetUsBackToAus #Unimelb

12.01.2022 Conservation is important, but it is also a huge challenge. In 2012, 28 Tasmanian devils have been moved to Maria island, east of Tasmania, in hopes of saving the species from DFTD. This insurance population grew to a hundred by 2016. Prior to the devil's arrival, feral cats and possums were significantly predating on the local shearwater population. The devils' presence decreased total predator activity by cats and possums, but the devils also hunted on birds. Unlike cats an...d possums, the larger devils could dig, thus having a higher impact on bird colonies. Shearwater colonies soon disappeared after 4 years of the devil's introduction. According to Birdlife Tasmania, 3000 breeding pairs of little penguins also disappeared. How do we keep negative consequences to the minimum? It’s not always easy as it seems. - #TasmanianDevil #Shearwater #Penguin #FeralCat #Possum #MariaIsland
