06.01.2022 As so many of you have, I am ‘tuning-in’ to the growing pains of our tribal mind this month. I am honored to be sharing the musical living space with my soul br...other Justin Michael Williams and today be sharing a song, with Thorald, that was initiated by our talented and finally celebrated mother, Madeleine McRae. The Turning is a powerful call to end the brutality and oppression based on color of skin in this country and around the world, now released and recorded by Justin Michael Williams http://smarturl.it/theturning. Please listen and share. I am committed to the idea that We are all worthy beings, but I am awakening again and again to the systemic decolonization, that I have internalized all the way to the level of my language and music. My ancestors were part of the European Colonialism and I have continued their legacy of oppression by carrying on their traditions. In the Urgency that I have found in the multitude of crises I am facing with my family, I am forced to see again how Unsustainable growth has been sustained on the backs of people of color. I am humbled to see the protestors of all walks, putting their bodies on the line. I believe in the human potential and I am aware to the generations of grief that may be to yet to come. Slavery has been transferred to the experience of the prison system, Inequality and poor health care in black communities. There is a biology of violence that needs time to decompose if there is to be communal healing. I am noticing how I respond by standing back when I doubt that I know what to say to my beloved friends of color. This is a form of flight and fear of ‘getting it wrong’. In my research I have found this to be part of my guilt. I have been reading up on Critical geography - a study on the experience of ‘place’ and ‘space’ for people of color. For example, in CA our neighborhoods are highly segregated - it really impacts the way people of color can move through space and place and how we set up the rhythms of life. Rampant gentrification has effectively prevented diversification in places like Ojai, CA. We must work at the local level to improve access to all places. I have unwittingly benefitted from a system that benefits the color of my skin. Then when I send you a text to tell you that I’m thinking of you, sending you heart emoji’s - I attack your dignity, my empathy turns to dehumanize sympathy. I find myself hiding out to avoid making these mistakes in my waking sleep. My white privilege must be something I take responsibility for, without the need to run from it or fight it. How do change the way I move my body that positively effects colored bodies? How do I free myself from colonialist language, so that I can free the incarcerated generations of black youth? How do I write and sing music without appropriation? How do I become an Ally? Here is our response. For now. We request that you rise up with us and sing this song! Please share your versions of this song with us. Here are the lyrics: The Turning THE TURNING LYRICS By Madeleine McRae VERSE 1 Its time to unite for human rights The door has opened now ever so slight On the backs of great souls, who died for the cause, this victory rides on sacred laws. The cops can no longer erase The laws they once put into place For our time has eyes, Digitsl spies Vision is captured the lens does not lie. PRE CHORUS Discrimination is killing the nations Breaking the hearts of the young generations Is this the best we can leave behind? A world where the blind lead the fearful blind CHORUS Listen to the sound of the turning tide Where all men walk side by side Where man sees himself in his brother's eyes Where Mother Earth no longer cries VERSE 2 Tears of our mothers reach Heaven's gate Long lay the sages in wait Mankind must choose now to change his fate Or watch his world disintegrate Mine and yours creates terrible wars World refugees drown at our doors While the hawk flies with hooded eyes Man's demise should be no surprise PRE CHORUS Discrimination is killing the nations Breaking the hearts of the young generations Is this the best we can leave behind? A world where the blind lead the fearful blind CHORUS Listen to the sound of the turning tide Where all men walk side by side Where man sees himself in his brother's eyes Where Mother Earth no longer cries Spoken bridge: Though the centuries have turned to the 21st Man kinds fear and hatred looms ever worse How many Black men have to die Before we cross this great divide The sword of arrogance, greed and pride Has bled all nations of indigenous tribe Now the river of blood has risen so high all men are horrified Though justice has taken wing at last It's time for her to descend And nest in our hearts So man can evolve beyond instinct and race And shame be replaced by the winds of grace. CHORUS Listen to the sound of the turning tide Where all men walk side by side Where man sees himself in his brother's eyes Where Mother Earth no longer cries Released and recorded by Justin Michael Williams http://smarturl.it/theturning Isaac
