24.01.2022 Most people who died of suicide deny they experience suicidal thoughts to their doctors, a major study shows, prompting calls to overhaul the way we decide who gets treatment.
24.01.2022 Our community group is back IN-PERSON! From tomorrow night we will be running a weekly groups on a Tuesday evening at the Hepburn Centre! We are very excited to be meeting in-person again and cant wait to see you all <3 The Hepburn Centre has had some changes and well be in a bigger room with comfy couches - which makes it easier to maintain social distancing. ... To make sure our DISCHARGED group is accessible to regional folks and those who find it difficult to attend in-person, our online group is continuing and has moved to Friday evenings at 7pm. A big thanks to our volunteers who continue to donate their time, skills and expertise. Thanks again to Helen and the Hepburn Centre for your support!
24.01.2022 Throughout the second half of 2019 we have been working hard on completing an evaluation of our groups and are very excited to release the report online for people to read and share! The research project investigated peoples experiences of DISCHARGED groups and how they compared to their experiences of the metal health system. Though this project is small, it demonstrates the positive impact of an alternative to traditional clinical interventions. The findings are novel and... have significant implications for the utilisation of peer approaches in addressing suicidal distress. A huge thank you to everyone that participated and helped this report come to be. An overview of the findings is provided in the tables attached as images. 15.01.2022 Exciting news about a new alternative to the emergency department set to open mid this year! Great to see that peers will be heavily featuring
13.01.2022 How time flies! Two years ago today we held our first DISCHARGED suicide peer support group. We started off with our trans and gender diverse group meeting twice a month and had 25 sessions in our first year. In our 2nd year weve expanded to have a second group that is open to the wider community and had both of our groups meeting weekly. Between the two groups we held 86 sessions in our last year! What a momentous feat! Over the past few months we have moved our groups onli...ne due to covid19 which has had the added silver lining of making the groups accessible to people in regional areas and to people outside of Western Australia. We now have folks from all across the country joining our suicide peer support groups! This year weve also completed a world first evaluation of Alternatives to Suicide peer support groups! This research was conducted with Curtin Uni and highlighted the incredible way our groups are supporting people. A big happy 2 years to our members that have stuck with us from the beginning! Its been great getting to know you None of this would have been possible without the voluntary efforts of our facilitators and committee. THANK YOU to all that you do Thank you to all of the community orgs that support us. And thank you to the Alternatives to Suicide Steering Committee WA who continues to lobby and advocate for this approach. 2020 is shaping up very differently than we imagined but weve still got big things planned for our future. Keep an eye out for the launch of our brand new website which will be coming very soon.
13.01.2022 Odds that the person holding the shovel is a social worker?
12.01.2022 Introducing our new ONLINE group!! The DISCHARGED ONLINE WEEKLY 90 MIN peer support group is a space for people to talk about, vent, sit with, or make sense of suicidal experiences, distress or the desire to die, without fearing hospitalisation or the police being called. Its FREE, there are no forms to fill out, we dont ask for any of your personal details and we dont record anything that is spoken about. Instead of trying to solve problems or provide you with answers, w...e deeply listen and ask curious questions without judgment. Facilitators are peers with lived experience of suicidal thoughts or feelings. The group is for people 18+ years old with person experience of suicidal thoughts, feelings or actions (not carers or allies). Theres no minimum or maximum as to how many times a person can engage with the group. We use the ZOOM meeting app which is free to download for computer or smartphone. You can also call in like a normal phone call. As our groups start on time, we strongly encourage you to log in 5-10 minutes before it starts so that you can get all the tech working, and to ensure you understand how to participate in the group, how the group works and how it differs from other support groups. 12.01.2022 A new article from the ABC presenting many of the flaws with the Australian suicide prevention sector - and that lived experience driven reforms are the missing link. Interviewee Graeme comented on how the sector currently treats those with lives experience: They dont listen to the people whove been there. They treat them as a patient still, like were not well and shouldnt be listened to.
11.01.2022 SUCH an important question to ask! So often giving advice can shut down the conversation when all someone wanted/needed was to vent and get a load off their chest.
10.01.2022 Introducing our 2020-2022 Strategic Plan! Our committee has spent the last five Sundays working to produce our first strategic document. This plan will guide our projects and work, ensuring DISCHARGED continues to sustainably grow.
09.01.2022 People need to be able to access more than 10 medicare rebated psychology sessions a year! This three tier plan is a great proposal.
06.01.2022 We now have a PayPal to accept donations! Donate to help us continue supporting those experiencing suicidal thoughts and feelings <3 DISCHARGED groups are some of the first peer support groups for people who feel suicidal in Australia. We are also the first organisation to make our suicide support groups available nationally, using the online platform Zoom. Running groups online has connected us with folks in lots of different regional areas, alongside people from all the maj...or cities in the country. A $20 donation could help us cover the cost of our Zoom account fees for one month. This would maintain up to 8 DISCHARGED group sessions and keep us connected with our online community, providing support to those in need right across Australia. We are grateful for donations of any size <3 https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr
06.01.2022 Our trans, gender diverse and gender questioning group is on tonight! Send us a message or email to get the location details.
05.01.2022 WE HAVE MADE SOME CHANGES TO OUR TRANS AND GENDER DIVERSE GROUP! DISCHARGED heard from our friends in the eastern states that our group was finishing too late in the night. Thats why we have decided to move our online support group to every Sunday at 6:30pm AEST (thats 4:30pm for us in Perth). This change is effective immediately!... That means this Sunday 5th of July will be the first group at the new time. Everything about the group will stay the same. The same codes and URLs to join the Zoom meeting, and the same facilitators, the only difference will be the day and time. If youre from Perth, dont worry! You can still sign in to the online groups if thats your preferred method of getting support. However, we have some exciting news for you! We are opening in person groups again! This time, were in a new location. For those who couldnt log in to our online groups, were very excited to see you again! This Monday 6th of July will be the first group at the new location. Everything about the group will stay the same. It will run at the same time as normal, from 6:30pm - 8pm. The only difference is the new location. If you loved the online groups, you can come to our in person group, and join us online to chat as well if you like. Or, you can alternate! Whatever works for you. Both groups will occur weekly, at the same time every week. As usual, for confidentiality reasons, the location and access codes for these groups are hidden from the public. If youd like to join one of these groups and havent attended before, or youre a regular whod like to know the new location of the in person group, send us an email at [email protected]. DISCHARGED also has a mailing list for group attendees where we send reminders on the days that groups are on with all the group details. If youre interested in joining our mailing list to receive these reminders, you can either email us or let us know the next time we see you. Enjoy your weekends!
05.01.2022 DISCHARGED IS MOVING ONLINE!! As of this week (23/3/20) our suicide peer support groups will be operating online to support everyone to be able to socially distance / self-quarantine. This will also enable people who might not usually make it to an in-person group to access our groups from their homes. We are using Zoom as a platform to hold group video calls (which is FREE to access). People can also call in from a landline or mobile phone. ... Reminder: Our groups are for people with personal experience of suicidal thoughts or feelings (not for carers or allies). Group details: Community group: Wednesdays 6.30pm-8pm AWST Keep an eye out for a post with the Zoom link! Trans and gender diverse group: Mondays 6.30pm - 8pm AWST Email [email protected] if youre interested in joining or check in the TransFolk of WA groups for details.

05.01.2022 NEW FREE-CALL NUMBER! We know that not everyone has access to the internet, or enough bandwidth for a video call to work, or enough phone credit for a weekly 90 min call. By having a free-call number for those in Australia we hope that more people are able to regularly access our groups. We have received a Neami National Suicide Prevention Grant to fund the free-call number for the next six months during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is to ensure our groups are as accessible a...s possible during this tough time. This means that dialing in on a phone will not use any of your phone credit - you wont be charged at all. At 3.20pm on Wednesdays simply call 1800 893 423 then wait for the prompt to type in the meeting ID 209 223 152. Thats it, youre in! Say hi! The other ways to join the group meeting havent changed. Video call is still available and you can join via the web ( https://us02web.zoom.us/j/209223152 ) or by downloading the Zoom app and typing in the meeting ID (209 223 152). We also run a weekly online DISCHARGED suicide peer support group for trans and gender diverse people every Monday at 6:30PM AWST! All other elements of the group remain the same, except that it is specifically for those who are trans, gender diverse, non-binary or questioning their gender. We keep this groups access codes hidden off public pages to ensure it is safe for trans people to access - please send us an email at [email protected] to join this group.

02.01.2022 Currently you have to reach crisis to get care for mental health issues in WA. Mental health prevention and support services are not able to meet the high deman...d from the community, resulting in high presentations at emergency departments. Sign this petition and join our call for WA State Government to properly fund community mental health support and prevention services, therefore reducing the presentations to hospital for mental health care. Read more and sign the petition on our website at https://actionnetwork.org//tell-state-parliament-to-proper Share this post with your friends and help us grow the campaign and get more signatures!
02.01.2022 This is a great start, but it would be great if more people could access an increased number of Medicare subsidised sessions. People living with eating disorders will be able to access up to 40 Medicare-subsidised sessions with a mental health clinician, and another 20 with a dietician, under changes that are due to begin on November 1.
02.01.2022 This weeks newsletter from The Big Feels Club is an extract from the upcoming book, The Procrastinators Guide to Killing Yourself. Its the sincere, heartfelt story of the author, Gareth Edwards, wanting to stop living (and what that taught him about life). Im starting to realise that my despair, distress and desperation are like the small, inverse feelings of the large and colourful life I want to live. The desire to kill myself is really the desire to live myself but feeling its impossible. What if thinking about my own death was not a sign that my life should end? What if, instead, it was a sign that I needed a different way of thinking?
