23.01.2022 "It’s awful to feel so alone. Looking back, it’s awful that I struggled for so long on my own. If you’re in a similar place, maybe it’s time to reach out. Reaching out is gonna be a little nerve wracking at the start. The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll be glad you did. Whether you pick up the phone or send an email, getting support from others who’ve been where you are right now, will make all the difference." Living with HIV and need to talk? Dr Karl Kruszelnicki Have a listen to Dr Karl's podcast for a brief history on the discovery of hepatitis A B & C.

18.01.2022 Alcohol is the most widely used drug in Australia. People drink alcohol for a range of reasons and in different social and cultural contexts, but alcohol can cause harm to the person who drinks and sometimes to others around them. The National Health and Medical Research Council has released new national guidelines for reducing the health risks from drinking alcohol after 4 years of extensive research. We’re not telling Australians how much to drink, say...s Professor Anne Kelso, CEO of NHMRC, we’re providing advice about the health risks so that we can all make informed decisions in our daily lives. To reduce the risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury, healthy adults should drink no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 standard drinks on any one day. The less you drink, the lower your risk of harm from alcohol. However, certain heath conditions can increase harm from alcohol. Because hepatitis B and C both affect the liver, people living with viral hepatitis should talk to doctor if they have questions about how drinking alcohol may be affecting their health. To find out more about the new guidelines, visit https://www.nhmrc.gov.au/health-advice/alcohol See more

12.01.2022 Even though many condoms are pre-lubricated, this lubricant may not actually be enough. The friction created when using condoms during sex can be uncomfortable and increase the chances of the condom breaking. Using additional lube helps to provide a safer and more enjoyable experience. Is your stash running low? Visit www.redthread.org.au/shop to order external condoms (3 sizes available) and water-based lubricant, or swing by the office at 319 Liverpool Street in Hobart to purchase. Cash and cards accepted!

11.01.2022 Are you an LGBTIQ+ Tasmanian who has experienced conversion practices? Do you want to make sure no-one else suffers cruel attempts to change who they are? If so, the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute (TLRI) needs to hear from you. Some people wrongly believe conversion practices are a thing of the past, or that they don’t cause harm. Show them they're wrong by filling out Question 3 of the TLRI’s new survey. Your personal experiences can be submitted confidentially and... will contribute to the TLRI’s final report on banning conversion practices. Here are the TLRI’s instructions for making your views known through its survey: Make sure to answer the first 3 questions, after which you can skip to the end or do the rest of the survey if you choose. Just make sure to complete the survey by selecting your option of anonymous / confidential / public submission. 06.01.2022 Today is Wear it Purple Day Wear it Purple was founded in 2010 in response to global stories of real teenagers, real heartache and their very real responses. In 2010, several rainbow young people took their own lives following bullying and harassment resulting from the lack of acceptance of their sexuality or gender identity. As the world saw the faces of precious young lives lost, some young people found a new sense of conviction and pur...pose to ensure that young people everywhere would know that there were people who did support and love them. Wear it Purple was established to show young people across the globe that there was hope, that there were people who did support and accept them, and that they have the right to be proud of who they are. Wear it Purple has developed into an international movement. New generations of rainbow young people continue to be dedicated to promoting the annual expression of support and acceptance to rainbow young people. What started out small has now grown; however the message remains the same. Everybody has the right to be proud of who they are. So join us this year to celebrate Wear it Purple Day. Be part of a movement that has the potential to save thousands of lives. Be part of this change. See more

04.01.2022 This week is Cervical Cancer Awareness Week. A lot has changed in this space over the last few years, and we provide information about it over at the Redbook On...line, our digital health resource for sex workers: https://redbook.scarletalliance.org.au/cervical-screening/ All people with a cervix who have ever been sexually active are at risk of cervical cancer, regardless of gender identity, sexuality, or the type of sexual activity that you are engaging in. Cervical cancer is caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and is one of the most preventable forms of cancer. The Pap Smear has been replaced by the cervical screening test (CST), which is more effective at detecting the presence of HPV and increases the time between testing from 2 years to 5 years. For most people, the cervical screening test involves the same procedure as the old pap smear. We've compiled a list of testing services here: https://redbook.scarletalliance.org.au/sexual-health-clini/ but also recommend checking in with your local sex worker peer organisation for more up-to-date referrals to sex worker-friendly sexual health services.
